  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What a great time...

I'm very happy to be able to come along on the ride... and unbelievably excited what's about to come around the next corner...

All that teasing makes me wonder, what you have up your sleeve ;) can't wait!

And thank you so much again and again for starting all this!

Red is the underdog in company size.

Not by much. RED said they were planning to hire 500 people this year. And didn't they have about 400-500 already? Arri is about 1,000 people too. Definitely compared to Sony, but I don't know that the Television and Walkman divisions can really count when comparing size. :)

Which is precisely what I would *hope* RED would do! I have no desire for RED to be an underdog. I want them to have the people and resources to do everything they want.

How well goes Dragon do compared to Alexa/F65 in terms of dynamic range and noise? Has RED tested this comparison yet?

Should be as good or better, but I'm looking forward to see some side-by-side tests, too. Well, maybe in early 2013...

I agree Gavin - further growth and innovation by Red is beneficial for all who use or own Red cameras, and for the industry as a whole. Controlled growth fuels competition, which fuels innovation, which in turn sells more cameras and in turn provides more options for all of us who use or own camera systems. With the growth of Red the whole dynamic in the motion media camera industry has evolved. I'm liking that...

Even if Red indeed eventually becomes the top dog in the motion media industry in terms of company size and sales, I expect they'll still choose to maintain an underdog mentality. That's an ingrained element of Red company culture - and IMO it should be retained. That will push them to stay ahead of the pack, which spurs ongoing innovation, and in turn benefits everyone who uses or owns Red cameras.

Jim's history at Oakley displayed a commitment to ongoing innovation - even when Oakley became a "big dog". I don't see Jim ever changing that mindset with Red - and Jarred and the entire Red staff are on that same frequency too.

A competitive marketplace benefits everyone...

Thanks for starting the war Jim.....
For that reason alone I hope you come out on top.

not to mention I am heavily invested in red....

I've seen a huge underdog lately. Aren't you, Jim? No? Strange. :-)

Hope to see soon under $6000 Scarlet other PL & Canon & Nikon Mount.

Ready to upgrade several cameras to dragon. Ready for light EF mount primes and zooms. Ready for Red Projector. Ready, ready, ready. What happens if I buy 3 scarlets today? Are they upgradable to dragon?

Yes. Why do you think Jim has been so happy the last couple weeks?

You will see some images before christmas and we will let you be the judge which is better. You guys have no idea how hard it is for Jim and I not to show you test images from the sensor.... :)

I will warn you though... in terms of a shoot-out.. It is akin to bringing a bazooka to a knife fight, so hopefully we see a bit more competition before it is time to enter that battle.

We actually had to re-redesign our camera ASIC yet again to handle how good the sensor turned out in terms of latitude and noise floor.. so when it's upgrade time you guys will all be getting new ones of those as well dropped into your cameras.

That is also the reason we havn't committed to a Dragon-upgraded Scarlet yet.. we gotta wait to see how the new ASIC handles things.

There is some bad news in all this though.... Even though the sensor will be done by the end of the year as expected, and we will have some Dragon-Epic prototypes floating around we will share as best we can..... realistically you guys will need to wait a couple more more months until the new new ASICs come out of the oven to start the whole customer upgrade process.

Fantastic news...!!

Well, you know that M8 is eager and ready to go under the knife... ANY TIME, and always willing to enter a new adventure and test new boundaries... ;)

NEW CUSTOM 6K ASIC!!!

yumm the more I hear about it the more hysterical I become.

I can only imagine whoaaaa

6K..... there's a ton of juicy info packed into that Dragon sensor

so whats gonna be the best way to see results should I stalk my buddies with Epic-M's or will there be a Demo at Red Studios?

BTW i'm love'n the "LEARN" email updates you guys are dropping, Sean is awesome.

Fistfight? No, I don't like them. But metaphorically, yes, only when there is an unjust situation and somebody comes along to 'clean things up' and begins to inflict much pain and butt-hurt upon the 'establishment'. It happens in society, religion, technology, business, politics, etc.

will there be a Monochrome Scarlet ?
Short answer: no.

Definitely will be demos at the studios.. and when it's time, The Epic-M guys will be first up to bat.

J & J, I don't think you need to rush out the Dragon..... be honest and be confident that we can wait.... We are generating 8 hours of dailies a day with 3 Epics on "Arrested Development" and everyone is happy with the amazing images.
I know people are impatient and there is a perception that we need an "Alexa Killer" politically but you know what you need to do and I am confident in your decisions. Having shot with Alexa, Epic and 35mm Panavision Anamorphic all in the same week I am still excited by what Cory shows me everyday in RedCineX.

We never pressured Kodak to come out with the newest and best. We knew the evil geniuses in Rochester would give us something incredible when it was ready. So I believe we should think of you. Evil Geniuses designing and testing new sensors and ASICs and you will deliver when it is right.

Until then I love your "film stock" and will continue using it until you come out with the next generation.

Thanks Peter.. you are a RockStar.

I'd love to come around when it's "demo" time. Gotta see what this bad boy can do.

And on a side note I wrapped a great shoot last Saturday and had that goosebumpily feeling all over again back when I first got my Scarlet. Still love'n it.

All good news, for me :) This year- provided my back injury recovers- we will be shooting EPIC Grand Prix footages. Next year I plan to do an important fiction/movie by June/July with the Epic. If its still MX, no problem- it shot Dragon Tattoo, the amazing looking Total Recall as well as Prometheus. If it has Dragon, however, I will make sure it deserves a place in this place's cinematic History :) (Obviously with or without the Dragon I will make sure of it anyway) . Ambitious, I know, but achievable. And, provided I'm healthy, the 60th Anniversary of the Macau GP, in November 2013, will definitely be shot with a Dragon Epic as the main cam. Another historical moment for the coverage of the event, just as this year with my Epic MX Lilau. I Am more and more confident handling the camera and its post production. In a couple of weeks I will share here the TV Commercial where the opening, non racing shots where shot with the Epic. Love the camera, love the workflow, love everything about it. Thank you Red Team, its THE best camera EVER for the indie filmmaker/producer.
