  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What a great time...

In accordance to the title of this tread started by Jim, let me be the first to congratulate him on his recent membership into the ASC as an associate member. Jim, I think it's fair to say that not only Red but also YOU have come a long way in these seven years. It's a well-earned honor and I'm thrilled with the news.

For those of you that don't know, associate members of the ASC are not working cinematographers, but are still vastly important contributors to the art and craft of cinematography. Unlike full cinematographer members, associate members do not include the ASC after their name, but it is still a great honor and recognition from the cinematographic community to nominate an individual as an associate.

Keep the underdog mentality, but know in your heart that you've already made a lasting mark.

Cheers!

Congrats Jim~! That is amazing news.

The icing on this cake would be a technical achievement Oscar. I am certain that it will get there :)

Ivan

There is some bad news in all this though.... Even though the sensor will be done by the end of the year as expected, and we will have some Dragon-Epic prototypes floating around we will share as best we can..... realistically you guys will need to wait a couple more more months until the new new ASICs come out of the oven to start the whole customer upgrade process.

This is not bad news at all as we've become professionals in waiting for new better things. That's part of the game,
"heh heh ..."

Looking forward to it. It's amazing to see how far cameras have come in the last few years. While on hiatus from Arrested Development, I watched a few episodes from the original 3 seasons of the show. The last episodes were shot in 2006, not too long before the Red One was released. The improvement in image quality from the original seasons to the new season is incredible. Truely revolutionary. The beautiful images that Peter Colister is creating are captured by a camera that is light enough to sit on the operators shoulder most the day with out killing them off. The Epic allows the show to stay true to its roots while gaining a wonderful cinematic quality. Can't wait to see what comes next.

First of all, Thanks for everything.
and then Congrats as always.
We are glad to be Under dogs... actually the Red Dogs;)
Cheers from Brazil

First of all: I am very happy to shoot with my Epic-X!
I waited a long time that this dream came true :-)
Waiting a few month for Dragon is not a problem.

Yeah! Like Rocky! he was always the underdog, and then he wins...the journey is much more exiting :)

...

We actually had to re-redesign our camera ASIC yet again to handle how good the sensor turned out in terms of latitude and noise floor.. so when it's upgrade time you guys will all be getting new ones of those as well dropped into your cameras. ....

Red was the match that set this blaze of innovation and competition off. So happy for your forward thinking. I think we'd still be saying "1080 is good enough" for the next 5 years if it wasn't for the ballsy introduction of 4k RAW. Whether you use Red, Arri, Sony, etc, You can't deny the fact that the current market wouldn't be so competitive if it wasn't for Red. As the consumer, it's a win win!

We definitely are committed... that hasn't changed.. but we wont know till we know..
That's awesome that your still committed to it. But does this mean that we will still see a Dragon upgrade for the Scarlet? Or are we looking at the possibility of that changing with no guarantee either way? I mean I know everything is subject to change. And don't take this the wrong way I just don't want to have this be a similar situation where we may not see this work out similar to how it worked out with the first Scarlet. Is it safe to assume we'd have news on this by the time the the Demo's are around at the end of the year?

You will know by the end of the year for sure. We will make sure Scarlet owners have some way to get to Dragon.. We just don't know what that looks like yet, or how much it will cost, and just how much of the Dragon's fire we can squeeze into the Scarlet infrastructure.. There is a point with Scarlet where you replace so many internal bits that a brain upgrade becomes a more economical ( for you ) path. But we don't know that yet...

Dragon is no joke.. it turned out to be one hell of a fire breathing menace that eats up every bit of pixel data you can throw at it, from the deep deep bottoms to the highest of the highs.

We have never seen anything like it before. Graeme and Rob definitely have their work cut out for them :)

Thanks for the answer Jarred :)

And thanks for the hard work to everyone at RED. Can't wait to see what is doable. Obviously I'd love having Dragon, but if it's even possible to have some kind of upgrade to the EPIC MX specs that would be something I'd love as well...

I personally would much prefer a Stage 2/Stage 3 like route to an upgrade. I know whenever I build a new computer it almost always make sense to just buy all new components. Everything improves so fast with technology that keeping around an old video card for instance doesn't make sense when it's worth $10.

I would also hope for a similar system since it would free you guys to be more deliberate with Scarlet-D's specs. The original Scarlet S35 was 1/3 the specs for 1/3 the price and offered full resolution at 30p. Would be nice if the next Scarlet had full 6k coverage at 24p. It's going to be at least a $7k upgrade. I imagine I could get at least $5k off of resale. It would probably be less labor intensive to build a new camera than to tear apart and reassemble an existing one (and then throw away a bunch of perfectly good boards). Seems like everybody wins.

You win.

Finally...

Jim

It's true Mr. Jannard. What you've done for the industry and for users goes beyond what RED has created. Like Apple and the iPhone, Red deserves credit for just about everything in development by every competitor that was forced out of complacency by your substantial investment of time, money and energy in an industry that would have gladly maintained the status quo otherwise.

Having an upgrade path to a Epic dragon would be great. Hope I can afford it if that is indeed what happens.

J & J, I don't think you need to rush out the Dragon..... be honest and be confident that we can wait.... We are generating 8 hours of dailies a day with 3 Epics on "Arrested Development" and everyone is happy with the amazing images.
I know people are impatient and there is a perception that we need an "Alexa Killer" politically but you know what you need to do and I am confident in your decisions. Having shot with Alexa, Epic and 35mm Panavision Anamorphic all in the same week I am still excited by what Cory shows me everyday in RedCineX.

We never pressured Kodak to come out with the newest and best. We knew the evil geniuses in Rochester would give us something incredible when it was ready. So I believe we should think of you. Evil Geniuses designing and testing new sensors and ASICs and you will deliver when it is right.

Until then I love your "film stock" and will continue using it until you come out with the next generation.

+10000 Peter. In this age of "I need more now and faster than now" creatives need to learn how to be comfortable with what they have not what they think they need or want.
As you perfectly summed up in your Kodak statement we have plenty to use right now and more than we need in certain circumstances. Dragon will be worth the wait but will be cream on the cake.

I hope it doesn't come to the only way to upgrade is to trade in my scarlet for EPIC, not just because of the price. But I would rather like to keep my Scarlet as a backup camera when I do pull the trigger on EPIC. My business plan is to keep my scarlet and also buy a EPIC down the road as my main camera. But like the MX upgrade, it's something that has to be done in order to stay with competition.

But either way, whatever you guys think is best for SCARLET owners is what I'll put my money into. Thank you for the update.
