  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Welcome the 18mm RPP to the family...

Really? Interesting. I recently acquired a 14mm and it's so wide it feels like a specialty lens. In what specific situations/shots do you find yourself pulling out the 14?

The Duclos Tokina 11-16 Ultrawide is an EXCELLENT companion to the RPP's
(See LENS SALT Tests). Its also featherweight and perfect for steadi work.

Eventually will be nice to have the RPP's plus (14,16, 40, 65, 135 etc) as Jim has stated in posts this past summer. but in the interim the Tokina is an affordable ($3495) stop gap.

Tim, wait till you see the 14mm shots in Descensus. Wow! Couldn't have done that production without it. Looking forward to seeing some more stuff on your Tokina.

For the next focal length I want (after 18mm) is that I really want the 65mm, moreso than a 16, 40, 135, etc. I'd use it for so many closeups. Repeatedly I find that a 50mm is too wide for a good closeup but 85mm is just too close, you need to haul the camera back to make it not a Sergio Leone closeup :-)

Good point, Jarred. I realize something has to give when trying to make sharp, fast, contrasty lenses at a price unheard of...and if the worst thing about the Red Pro Primes is that I have to build up my shoulders and arms some more, I can live with that!

Shawn, I second you on wanting to see a 65mm. And a 40!
 
12, 14, 40, 65, 135 for me :)

But...18mm...mmmm...I'm happy with for a long time ;)

I agree with Tim, the Duclos 11-16mm is an amazing lens for the price and match seamlessly with the RPPs.

Remember that when shooting 5K EPIC... a 25mm acts more like a 20mm, a 50mm acts like a 40mm, etc.

uuuh, our reference point is already s35. so indeed a traditional 14mm for an s35 camera would be roughly like a 12mm (assuming the 14mm will cover 5k) if put on a 5k epic or scarlet. I'm following Jim's previous statement as quoted in my post. Not sure what you are trying to say?

If you scooped that canon 1.8 from canada, you got yourself a killer deal.

I'm hopeful for a 180mm or 200mm RPP.

James, if it is 14mm on S35 then a widening the sensor to 5k will widen the image projected by the lens as well since it can cover that resolution. It would have around the S35 equivalent field of view of a 12mm S35 lens.

Well understood. Jim's original post didn't give a reference so I'm having a little fun, ergo the couch. When I think about all the DoF posts around these days....

That being said, to nit pick, the lens doesn't so much cover the resolution per say, but the imager size.
