  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Weapon wish

I DIG THE THUMBNAIL IDEA! While we're at it, it would be AWESOME to be able to 'name' clips too, right? That's the one thing I miss from my... er... ah... um... Sony cameras! (Yeah, I said it!)

Any chance we can throw in a Delete clip on camera option as well, and with thumbnails would be easier to select given clip to delete.

REALISTIC wishes I hope... I have 4 camera so a fair bit of skin in this..

Keep it small keep it epic... Let's not through any babies out...and also Assuming Red gets licked the 3rd way OLPF I'd like to see

Not in any real order...

1) slightly Higher Frame Rates 50% across the board is a good start/goal.. Happy for phantom style cache system
2) Lower Compression ratios (faster media.. I already have mini mags but we need faster)
3) 2 HDSDI with separate LUT capability
4) sturdy audio in (NOT FULL SIZE XLR please) at line level as well as MIc option.
5) lower optical centre... Remember there is space under the mount where a shutter used to be USE it and shave the height down.. Can grow longer slightly if needed
6) no proxies as part of main system unless they can do of-speed then I think that is great for many folks
7) 5 pin lemo TC or even BNC... Start/stop should be separate as well..2pin lemo
8) LDS capabilty (there is room for everyone) and Zeiss/ARRI lenses are everywhere..
9) 256GB media option (faster please)
10) I like the idea of ambient TC network? ... But maybe that is too specific...
11) better heat and power management..

Everyone gets upgraded if we are even close;-)

Our understanding of how to build batteries that don't degrade is slowing inching forward.
http://phys.org/news/2015-02-dendrite-eraser-electrolyte-batteries-short-circuiting.html

There are a couple of other candidates out there like 3DOm (Three Dimensionally Ordered Mesoporous Carbon) that will - once perfected - give options for Cheap ingredients.

I'm guessing that Red will have targeted a few of the top energy 'sappers' in the Epic Brain ... like switching a component to a 14nm ASIC that could 1/2 the power for that board .. or even squeeze more functionality onto fewer boards. Less power = less heat to get rid of = lighter camera & more minutes to squeeze out of Redvolt.

AJ

<snip>
9. Release Version 2 of Redvolts or Redvolt XL that last longer, don't get hot and can be charged immediately (not wait till cooled).

My understanding is the 512GB 1.8" overcooked a bit when we tried to push it.

...But that the Dragon sensor has 2 x the Read / Reset of the MX.

If the MX sensor was able to 'cope' with 2048 x 1080 at 240 Hz -> I speculate that the Dragon sensor in the Weapon brain will be able to 'cope' with at least 480Hz with 1080 lines of vertical resolution. Which could scale to 240fps @ 5K WS .. or 160fps @ 6k FF ... if and when the Minimags are able to sustain this.

(speculation) With a bit of spare space on a new ASIC .. maybe the processing rate has been upped to maximised to match the Dragon.... 480Hz does have a nice ring to it.

AJ

<snip>1) slightly Higher Frame Rates 50% across the board is a good start/goal..

My 'hopes':

1 Faster blackshading <60 Seconds, if not possible more storage for CAL maps at least 5 or so.
2 Built in NDs. Or vari ND Module between the lensmount and sensor (Would that be possible?)
2 Better lowlight capabilities.

No more sensor windowing for higher speeds, only resolution changes. Changing the FOV of for frame rates and their accompanied resolution is the only thing I really don't like about the cameras, it'd be great if they could get rid of this and still give us full readout but just down sample it to whatever the card bottleneck is. I'm really hoping this is the case with new electronics inside.

Getting us much lower compression across the board would be nice as well.

1.) delete clips from red mag in camera - at least last take

2.) mark clips - like your favorite takes

3.) add/edit/set up metadata in camera

4.) LUTs in camera

5.) high quality on-board audio capture (via mini-XLR)

6.) color science, color science, color science

7.) large LCD option with at least 1080p resolution - the current 9" is failure

8.) custom Magnify options. e.g. 50%, 200% etc - not only for preview but also for playback - I need to be able to inspect every part of the frame as I wish - don't want "surprises" in post

9.) fanless or noiseless, u choose ;-)

10.) if possible, make the space where the OLPF sits and the rear of the lens moves into a bit larger - so we can continue with behind-the-lens mods... this worked really well on the R1 MX and does not on Epic design...

11.) built-in backfocus adjustment/setting tools... put on the lens cap (with sharpness pattern on the back) and have ur sw figure out the math to check for and adjust backfocus... or something along those lines... ;-)

12.) 4K preview out - with the cheap 4K screens now available, this would make sense for preview... maybe do 420 if 444 is too expensive...

13.) make it out of the box usable (on a basic level) without the need of a single add-on

14.) a TRULY lossless codec

15.) built-in ND

everything else like sensor size, DR, less power consumption, form factor, lower compression rates at high speed is on ur list anyways... ;-)

Do it RED, u know u can.

oh, and a somewhat related wish - maybe we should do a poll in the cinematography forum:

RPPs v2 - FF 35 - same killer quality/price ratio as the original RPPs, suited for FF Dragon sensor coverage with appropriate lp/mm resolution...

size and lens markings could be a bit improved... ;-)

Awesome very excited to test it out! You have any examples online per chance?

How do you go about capturing a black shade for frame averaging? The one time I tried it on my MX I was at my 1fps 360 degree calibration and there were hit pixles all over the place.

You use the BS for the shutter speed you choose, just as always. If that seems counterintuitive, I think it will become clear when you look at the parameters the frame averaging.

Here is my wishlist:
  • Silence
Shooting feature films with this camera can be distracting for actors during rehearsals, it would be great to have a silent camera, like the new ALEXA Mini. I've seen a prototype few months ago and this camera is so silent, you can't hear it!
  • One OLPF
One OLPF for low light and daylight. This is important. Changing OLPFs during a feature film shoot can be very tough for the colorist, as colors are changing.
  • No more Blackshading
I don't like the Blackshading thing. I seriously would like to have a camera which I turn on and it works.
  • No fans on the top
A fan on the top can be an huge issue, while shooting under tough conditions. Also I would like to have a seperated cooling channel for the fan, like the ARRI Alexa or ALEXA Mini
  • ProRes 444 XQ Recording
ProRes is an industry standard for tv feature film work.
  • Global Shutter
  • More Dynamic Range
  • Higher Frame Rates
I don't need it, but would be great. I don't need it, if the camera gets louder because of the high frame rates!
  • 2-3 SDI Outputs for 4K monitoring
  • Control Panel on the right side for the 1st AC
  • Internal ND filtration
  • Internal Lockit for Timecode
  • Lightweight body
  • Clean image in all channels and a native ISO of 800, probably two native ISOs like the Panasonic VariCam.
That's it. I'm happy

Are you joking? you might be only one who wants to delete clips from camera.this is not a damn iphone.
all of the wishes you guys wrote already exist on current dragon.
4K SDI outputs? Broadcast Module
DR? Its already same level with Alexa. Why do you want more? (creating better images lol)
Internal ND? Motion Mount
Higher Frame Rates? If you want 1000fps or a gazillion fps get a highspeed camera.
And you guys says at least 10 nonsense options in the end request for a most lightweight cam? conflicting wishes i would say.

;-)))) oh boy

delete takes/clips from red mags > save space > reduce offload times... naturally we're referring to bad takes that - after review - are clearly not gonna be used...

Can you do that on Alexa? F65? Any other cinema camera.Name it
You are so innocent to think that its not doable. There is a reason they dont do that.

that is why this thread is called WEAPON WISH... nobody said it was easy, these are suggestions to push the envelope...

this has been requested forever, yet with your 2500 posts u first pretend it was a weird request (yeah, what an inconvenient feature) now u list competitors...

I don't give a crap what they can or cannot do... and re you other post: if u got everything u need then simply stay on Dragon.

... and who says R3dcode cannot be evolved/improved... ?

Personally not a fan of the delete clip in camera... On set is a dynamic crazy place sometimes - as far as I'm concerned if we shot it it ends up at the post house and they can ignore it. The idea of saving space, can quickly turn into "I thought you said delete take 2?, Didn't you??" followed by tears and the client throwing a tantrum.

Thumbnails, with the option to select clips for playback from them, is however an idea that I can get behind. would make it super easy for a little replay at the camera with the director, grip, gaffer, without having to involve the video village.

For the record, I think he is suggesting that it is easy to do but that wisdom suggests it's not a good idea. (As Glen states in his post.)

Don't have the hdsdi recessed, it's in a much better place but it looks recessed.

My wish list:

1. THE BEST COLOUR MANAGEMENT AND SKIN TONES IN THE INDUSTRY

2. INTERNAL ND FILTERS

3. 500 fps to 700 fps...high frame rates @ 4K

4. 100% CARBON BODY

5. TITANIUM PL MOUNT

6. 30.000 US $ FOR BODY WITH PL MOUNT INTEGRATED

requested forever by video camera users.Nobody wants to delete single multiple clips on mag.Its against nature of film magazine.
Im saying its the most easiest thing in the world. Its doable but nobody wants that option.Except videographers (5D,DSLRs)
