  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Weapon wish

In no particular order:
Better light sensitivity and cleaner image at high ISO - Let's take noise to the backyard and burry it. Those of us who want noise for "texture" reasons can always add it in post.
Built in NDs - Yes, the motion mount is nice but it comes at the price of light loss and it has issues with certain lenses.
Global shutter - No explanation needed here.
Power - I said it here a few times, I love to power the camera from the side handle but the battery that goes in it just doesn't do the job. Redvolt 2.0 is long overdue.
Deleting clips in camera - For the life of me I still don't understand why this hasn't been implemented.
Everything else I am really happy with.
I know there are some of us who are asking for a 65mm 8K sensor with 20 stops of DR and up to 1000 FPS with built in proxy recording etc. etc.... I am a humble man with modest needs :-)
I love my Dragon.

I would like to see a Timelapse mode like in the red one
Doesn't this already exist, and has for some time on Epic MX and Dragon? Go to 'record mode' and check out all the settings!

If this is a wishing well i would add
4k uhd-sdi and hdmi out,
Built in electronic nd filter
Wireless video transmition built built in
A new ground breaking autofocus tool for easy focus tracking.
Actual useful 3axis sensor
Thumbnails
400-500fps
New sidehandle with built in wireless followfocus
Improved lowlight

I DIG THE THUMBNAIL IDEA! While we're at it, it would be AWESOME to be able to 'name' clips too, right? That's the one thing I miss from my... er... ah... um... Sony cameras! (Yeah, I said it!)

Since we are chasing Jarred across posts, and he seems to be chasing us as well... I wish weapon continues to be able to have a side handle. For documentary filmmaking, and the kind of gun and run I can do with the Epic, operating from the side handle is a god send. I'm sure there will be a sidehandle... :)

I agree, it took me awhile to warm up to that hunk of plastic and metal hanging on the side of the camera, but for my most recent film it was completely indispensable.

Ain't this fun?

Long exposures don't work on any RED cameras, even the RED One, due to the lack of a dark mask subtraction method and their electronic shutter blanking. When properly set up, frame stacking can give amazing results and seriously noise-free images. Yes, it's not exactly the same thing as long exposure. But my EPIC is a better time-lapse camera than any of my current DSLRs. I still really like my D810 though for it's extra pixels, full frame sensor and a few other things though... Different tools for different applications, ya know..

There you go again, dazzling us with science. I knew it didn't work but I hadn't a clue as to why.

You do realize that there are ways of doing a proper in camera down conversion on a pixel by pixel basis without any line skipping right?
Sony and Panasonic have been doing it for years.

There is plenty of cameras out there that can do this and is something I would love to see in combination of compression ratios and frame rates.

on number 3. That was brought up with the ver first RED ONE. It is not possible to record an r3d without the video data stream. What you can do is cap the lens and put the compression at 18:1 and that will get you a lot more recording time. My other piece of advice for this is to get your hands on a ZOOM H4 or an iMic that you can plug directly into your iphone to record 96K audio.

Does not have to a r3d. Any uncompressed audio format with time code would do.

I would guess that recording raw and compressing to REDcode are enough of a challenge for the ASICs such that down conversion in camera might become difficult to add to the equation.

The same was told about recording 4k raw in the past, if we keep the bar low whats the point of even having a discussion.

I'm not sure i understand. RED has always recorded 4K (or more) and raw. If the down conversion adds significantly to the processing needs, then you are unlikely to get any more FPS out of the system. That means you are back to square one.

Sorry,

Maybe you missed my point. The camera can not record audio only to an R3D. Nor can it record without recording an r3d file. So you can not ask it, not is it possible to have it record audio only formats.

But this is consistent with any DSLR, tape based or disk based camera on the market.

That frame averaging mode has blown my mind and the TL out of dragon is actually, insane. :)

I assumed the idea was to request features that drive innovation.

Ok this is not VHS and we are not in the 80's, the RED camera is a small computer and its software based. My iPhone records 240fps video and audio and a whole lot more.
Having 4 mic's plugged into a RED and being able to swish to audio recording only, with no downtime and with the same set up is a hell of a feature to me.

Or maybe my request should be, build in iPhone. Lol.

Yes and mark favorit takes!

hey, sorry. I was just trying to let you know that it's a digital cinema camera that records r3d files. I didn't get that you wanted a app built into the firmware to turn it into an audio recorder.

maybe you should request higher project time base frame rates - like 500fps time base at 500fps recorded ;)

you can do it today with the epic e.g. project timebase 50fps at 50fps records sound and put into a 25fps project timeline for editing will end up being slomo + you got the audio. I think the most you can do is 60fps/60fps

Awesome very excited to test it out! You have any examples online per chance?

How do you go about capturing a black shade for frame averaging? The one time I tried it on my MX I was at my 1fps 360 degree calibration and there were hit pixles all over the place.
