  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Weapon wish

Hey guys what do you think about this?
Weapon = True Colors
Red project is about 10 years old.
Finally are we there wih true colors or not?
It's just my opinion and do not want to bother anybody.

Minimalist wishes:

Ability to connect Weapon to a computer (wired or wireless) and transfer files off the mag.
Backup module for Weapon that allows us to transfer files off the mag onto a removable 1.8” SSD (for field backups without a computer).
No idea if this is technically feasible, but I’d love it if we could connect Weapon to a computer via Thunderbolt and have it function like a Rocket.

One guy is finally talking about color.. I give you a +1000 my friend, according to me, the number 1 priority is "COLOR"...

Ha! Yeah, this is the only reason I can see why it hasn't been implemented yet. It makes less human error possible before the card gets to the DIT.
I don't think this is the main reason. The main reason is that the files become fragmented once you start deleting clips and the write speed is severely affected. That would be a major headache and source of write errors- you don't want to go there....

I think this makes the most sense.

I still don't buy that as an excuse after all of these years though. Change the file structure to avoid this.

There is obviously a way to make it work because the ability to delete individual clips is in most camera systems. Hopefully it's something Weapon addresses and improves on.

It's not a game changer, it's not a deal breaker, but as someone who has used RED for several years now it's something that would put a smile on my face every once in a while. :)

How is it that a P2 card can allow for files to be deleted without any of the issues you're describing?

Might be worth taking a look at write speeds for the various sizes and types of data streams in these competing systems before dismissing this as a reason. "Changing the data structure" doesn't seem like a trivial or wise decision given the importance of the integrity of this process and the resulting data.

I don't think there is an argument about whether it can be improved. Isn't it always about the risks and what you (might) have to give up when you move to a new system/process/model? Personally, I have never given it a second thought since I don't do a ton of playback when I am on set. So, I don't care as long as they don't "break" it.

For sure. Obviously if it breaks something, I can live without it.

Current playback/clip management feels like something they settled for early on though. My point is, if the current system would in fact "break" upon adding some of these features then, by all means, re think the system. Isn't this kind of what the "Weapon" is all about? Updates to the entire RED system? I, for one, hope it isn't limited to the body/accessories alone.

The Atomos Shogun has a more robust playback/clip management interface for cripes sake. I feel like, in 2015, they should be able to re think their current system without breaking what already works.

The P2 cards write (H26x) compressed files. The speed is trivial compared to the R3D stream...
I also believe that P2 cards are striping , kind of RAID 0 setup. That helps both the speed and the fragmenting issues...

I'm just going to come out and say it.

Playback and in camera clip management for RED SUCKS. It's a pain in the ass. Whenever someone wants to see a shot that was near the beginning of the mag it's embarrassing to sit there for 5 minutes as you manually cycle back to the start. If I'm spending $40,000+ on a camera system I think it's fair to expect certain basic functions and this is 1000% one of those basic functions.
If you use FoolControl you can playback any clip instantly. You have random access to the scrolling list.

Oooh, I forgot about that. I need to check that out for sure.

You can also open the menu while in playback mode, select Media, and then scroll through super fast. Just pick the clip you want and hit load. Saves tons of time.

I don't care about the current system and the reasoning behind why it is the way it is.

Change it.

Improve it.

Re think it.

It's 2015, not 2008. If we can have 8K/VistaVision/16+ stops of DR we can have individual clip deletion and thumbnail previews.

Dude dont know how to use menu and blames the camera for this.

LOL...how does this have anything to do with not knowing the menus?

Thumbnail previews are hidden in the menus somewhere? How about individual clip deletion? I haven't seen them yet. Do enlighten.

Cycling through a bunch of file names on a full 512 GB card with no thumbnails and having trouble finding the desired clip is NOT "operator error". Sorry dude.

I don't know how getting rid of the gate shadow and sensor smear introduced by Dragon isn't #1 on everyone's list.

invidiual clip deletion? This is not 5D mark3.not gonna happen.Go out play with Alexa and F65 and tell me if they have this option. Why do you guys think individual clip deletion its hard to accomplish its doable and thank god they dont add this feature. Its not a video camera.I know there are bunch of videographers with only 1 SSD and missing out sunset because card is full.
Im holding dragon in my hands now and looking at playback menu which contains at least 120 clips.it takes 2 seconds to scroll ANY CLIP i would like to watch.
You have 120 clips on alexa and how you gonna go 49th clip? rotate the damn knob and find the clip.On Red its much quicker. (thumbnail previews? are we talking about your iphone?)
sorry dude you cant do playback with your brain signals yet but believe its must be on to do list for Red :)

i do compare between cinema cameras Red,Arri,F55,F65 please dont include DSLRs and video cameras on this segment.

OK, I'm just going to side step the condescending nature of your response and push on. I'm using the SAME Dragon as you buddy, no iPhone, no Mark III. RED Epic Dragon M.

So you think it's a BAD idea to add thumbnails to each r3d? In what way is that a bad idea? That makes no sense whatsoever.

Also, you're also telling me you've never had a situation pop up where you could have saved a ton of time by deleting an individual clip?

Please...save it.
