  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

WEAPON Information Summary and Pricing FAQs

As promised, we have created (what we hope is) simple one-pagers for each upgrade path. Download the PDF for the camera you will be trading in based on your invoice date and see your options that includes total out of pocket cost per path.

They can be found on both the WEAPON summary FAQs and WEAPON pricing page.

We will also be updating the FAQs and relevant other areas of RED.com to show the new "NAB" deadlines. An email blast will go out to the same effect. This will have given you four full weeks since NAB started to make sense of your options.

The LAST DAY to place a pre-order for WEAPON 8K sensor upgrade for the all-in price for $10,000 is Friday, May 8. It is also the last date to place an order for a new (ie, non-upgrade) WEAPON orders and receive a $5000 accessory credit once your WEAPON is invoiced.

Everyone who has placed (or will place an order by May 8) will have until COB Mon, 5/18 PT to pay their pre-payments for 8K sensor upgrade and pay their deposits for WEAPON upgrades/new camera orders. Your money is not in by COB on May 18 PT, then your order is cancelled and you lose your spot in line.

Of course, after May 8, you will continue to be able to place EPIC/SCARLET-to-WEAPON upgrade orders as well as new WEAPON carbon fiber camera orders. Deposits for those will be subject to our normal terms of sale. But, after May 8, you will NOT be able to pre-order the 8K sensor upgrade until we are closer to kicking off those upgrades. As has been said many times, when we next take orders for 8K, it is going to be AT LEAST double the current $10,000 price.

People have also asked if the EPIC/SCARLET-to-WEAPON upgrade $5000 accessory credit will continue indefinitely. Like Jarred always says, all good things will eventually come to an end - but you have a while on that being in place. People have also asked if the upgrade bundles were an NAB thing only - no, they are not. Those will continue to be available for the foreseable future.

After reading the FAQs and my posts in this thread, if you still have questions, fire away. If you ask a question already answered, I am sending Big Lu to your house.

Hi Brent, Since i paid for 8k sensor in total, i was wondering if i could just pay in total the amount for the entire camera upgrade(which i will receive earlier then the 8k sensor). My accounting approach and how i do quarterly's would be a lot easier if i can just pay in full(once i commit to an order it's taken as a loss for the quarter since I have committed to the total amount). Also I am really grateful of this extension, since I have only put in 1 of my dragons for update to 8k, and now with all i have read & seen at NAB - want to put my second dragon in for 8k.

Patrick, we can take your money in full, of course. But we won't invoice your WEAPON upgrade aside from the deposit until it is ready to be actually upgraded. So, the money will just be sitting in your RED account until that time.

Glad the extension helped. We just wanted people to have the time to digest this all.

...at least $20,000 US

From the FAQ:
A lens with FF35 coverage will not only cover the 24mm x 36mm size of traditional Full Frame, but it will also cover the 40.96mm x 21.60mm of the 8K RED DRAGON Sensor (see image below).

Your drawing makes it look like a bigger circles fits inside a smaller circle, can you explain your math, Pythagoras disagrees:

FF35mm = 24mmx36mm = 43.3mm image circle
Weapon-8k = 40.96mmx21.60mm = 46.3mm image circle

3mm is a big leap in image circle, longer length Master Primes 65 through 150 would probably cover FF35 with a little vignetting.
Even 35mm still lenses are not going to cover 46.3mm except Tilt/Shift and maybe a few exceptions like the two Otus series lenses.

Christopher, your calculation is for the full sensor size, not 8K 2:1 at 40x20. But I get how the copy is misleading in the FAQ, will have that edited.

I can help on this particular subject and I'll certainly be doing some Weapon 8K Dragon coverage tests when that time comes.

According to the numbers 8K HD is going to likely be just fine for any FF35 lens. And I actually think it's going to be fairly good news for the vast majority of other lenses out there for up to 8K FF coverage.

@Brent

Is the mini-mag trade in program an open-to-all thing, or is it only for people who have chose a camera upgrade to weapon? Ie, if for whatever reason you're going from 1'8" SSD to mini-mag but are NOT signing up for the weapon upgrade, are you still eligible for the program?

thanks

Is there any information on the 1:1 magnify lag? It's a little thing but if there's little to no lag on 1:1 that'd be huge. Takes a few seconds on Epic / Dragon round trip to punch in and check critical focus, would be a nice addition to have it close to instant.

Hi Phil,

You are a legend! This coverage chart is so useful!

What are your thoughts about 8K Weapon and 2:1 anamorphic format? I guess we could now get a perfect full 4:3 mode like the alexa etc? I'm new to anamorphic but since my lenses arrived this morning, I'm a quick learner and I know I want my f35mm even wider!

Cheers for everything you do on this forum Phil.
