Was stoked to see that Phil has taken delivery on the first 8K Weapon. I want to rent this cam for several projects coming up early fall so Phil says “sure . . . hit me up”.

My initial rush of thinking about all the cool possibilities was then followed by a personal reality check as I look around my studio at the inventory of lens, battery, card readers, Mac trashcan, DSMC1 bits etc and suddenly realized that I better start seriously thinking about the 8K ecosystem as it applies to me.

Much has been written on these subjects since NAB 2015 but now it’s Christmas eve and time to render general discussions into actionables. I would like to prepare ahead of time with this same but different cam than the Dragon.

To start, I would like to ask those who intend to rent their 8K cams what are they going to include for let’s say these three scenarios:

1. Studio / Shoot: The full kit where weight is not an issue. For simplicity, let’s say the project is a fashion shoot with lock down and slider shots. Include lenses you will have available for this and the following kits.

2. Location Shoot: where air travel might be involved so everything has to pack into 50lb cases. This would be the lean kit.

3. Gimbal Optimized: this would include the gimbal and a lightweight camera/lens set-up and any second op gear you will have or suggest.

Looking for turnkey solutions for daily and weekly projects. Include insurance requirements and anything else you can think of.

Next up would be the DIT requirements. This is a brave new world so would ask guys like Blair what does a DIT cart include as a minimum?

And finally, post processing. I currently have a MacTrash, bigass TB raids and use Resolve to cut and color. What am I in for in trying to work with 8K footage for a hardware? Kigroe?

If it’s OK with the Mods I would like to keep a running link set in the following post places to update with information for folks like me who intend to rent to connect with those who have 8K cams and services.

Real excited about this and look forward making some epic footie!

Cheers!

Good idea for a thread. Projects to shoot when I get mine but may rent out between projects. It will be good to have a guide from others doing same to compare pckgs and better still, to identify renter/rentee nearness and availability.

I think this camera is going to be in greater demand than RED can satisfy via production.

I currently have an order in for an 8K weapon that will be based in Austin. As Elsie mentioned this is going to be a very in demand camera.

Mine will be in West Texas but I can get it to Austin if anyone needs 2 cameras on a shoot. '-)

That is great to know! I have a feeling there might be numerous opportunities for us to work together.

Mine will be based in NYC, and will obviously ship out to people if needed.

I have a long wait though.

Good idea Zeb. The early days might be a little nuts. Since I am also in San Diego I was kinda o' hoping to charge your through the n... ;-), I mean rent you my 8K when I get it. The real question is what the going rates will be...

Zeb,

I don't think the 8K version of the Weapon is going to require much different in terms of logistics than the 6K Weapon? Obvuisly the lenses need to cover but full frame glass is not necessarily physically much different. All the camera accessories should be identical although I would make sure you had a top notch follow focus and most importantly an A grade focus puller.
There will be more data so you could use faster and bigger drives or you can just take into account longer data dumps. Am I missing something?

The max write rate on the mini-mags is 300MB/s so the actual amount of data from 8K frames isn't necessarily more than 6K frames - assuming you aren't using high compression ratios. The unknown, at least for me, is how much more compute muscle it might take to decode the larger raster, plus the scaling for display and/or transcode. The first thing I'd want to determine is what impact the amount of VRAM on the GPU might have - I would expect 8 or 12GB to be noticeably better than 4GB - but I'm from the test, test, test school. Really hoping the RR-X can take a load off the CPU(s) and GPU(s) so a $10K Super-Micro build (and Windows, which I despise) isn't a necessity...

Hi ZEB!!

I ordered right after NAB announcement and will be renting out my kit. Very anxious to see my Kowas on the 8K and expect my RRX will be a sought after piece, for most users, depending...

Thank you very much

What lens mount will be in most demand? I don't know what the upgrade plan/price is for the PL mount. For personal use, I fully plan to use the Canon mount, with Zeiss Otus lenses. If there is a lot of demand for the PL mount, then this is something I would consider upgrading if it is an extra upgrade expense.

Same question around the OLPF. At one point Jarred mentioned that which ever OLPF you send in during upgrade is the one you get back. For me, I am planning to send in with the STD OLPF. In fact, I have not removed it from the Weapon since receiving it. So if others wish to use STH or LLO OLPF, then I will need to upgrade them too.

I also use the Redvolt XL module / batteries. I have been thinking about getting an AB mount. No plans for V-mount at the moment. Again, subject to change based on demand.

What is the minimum kit? Brain, LCD, lens mount, IO module/OMOD, battery module, couple of mini-mags, mag reader and sidekick/side handle? What is the daily rate? I was initially thinking between $2,000 and $2500 per day for an 8K, but that probably depends on number of days (e.g discount for a 3-day) and what is included. (Previously mentioned items) I also have the Shogun Flame that I purchased to monitor HDR in the field. It is heavier than the touch LCD, even without batteries. As mentioned, I have Canon lenses, so Otus 55mm and 85mm along with the Zeiss APO f2 135mm. All three have the Duclos Cine-mod. Planning on the 28mm Otus once Phil confirms it covers 8K. Also have the TS-E 24mm MK II, 24-70 MK II and 70-200 MK II.

In Zeb's gimbal scenario, I have been looking at the Jet Pack. I am okay with an HDMI Jet Pack for personal use, but would people rather have the SDI Jet Pack? Zeb, do you have the Letus? I recall you testing it out when it was first released. That is the gimbal I have been eyeing, just been waiting on a second generation. Can I get away with the smaller one? I would want the magnesium version either way.
