  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Weapon 8k Queue

Is this some sort of sick October Fool joke?

I think Erich was just adding his sales orders, NOT allocations, to Stacey's original list.

FWIW, the S35-ish 8K Helium sensor we have been offered to "tide us over" until the VV Dragon cuts are ready is amazeballs. For starters, the noise floor is, IMHO, 2 FULL STOPS lower than Dragon - might even be 3 stops, will have a better gauge of that after the new image processing drops. Whatever frustrations we've had over the last 18 months are going to be greatly assuaged once we have those Heliums installed. Yes, will still be jonesin' to shoot the big frame, but it's sure going to take the pain out of waiting.

Cheers - #19

ETA Helium VV ?

Oh, that's more in line with expectations in re: the order update.

Yeah, read your comments in another thread about your experience with the 8k helium... does make that sensor loaner program more tempting but like you said still want the Vv.

The Helium 8ks are a 20 *dimes a twelfth of a dozen. '-)

* In gambling parlance, a dime is $1k.

If RED offers a Helium VV I'll need to change my pants (and my computers). Due to the smaller Helium pixel pitch, we'd be looking at 10K+ in a VV format which is beyond current internal processing capacity AFAIK. That said, RED engineering is on a roll - so who knows...

Yeah, I think we would all be editing proxies and perhaps rendering farm businesses would crop up to handle the heavy work. It would likely be for big-budget stuff due to the cost of digital capture and post starting to rival film.

I hope they do it.

That base ISO question is likely to further vex many as technology marches on. IMO, Signal to Noise ratio expressed in DB is a more useful comparison tool.

I don't want to get ahead of the train here, especially since a new image processing pipeline is at the proverbial door, but @3,200 ISO via the SDI tap looked kitchen clean on a 25" Sony A250 OLED. If you have an aversion to noise, you're going to LOVE Helium.

What excites me is the potential to work in synergy with existing light sources on location vs blowing them away with big lighting instruments. My analogy would be tent camping right in the wilderness vs parking your 32' RV nearby and looking out the window. Setting a mood, shaping a face, focusing attention where you desire, etc are all still important parts of visual storytelling. IMO, lighting is still the keystone of Cinematography. Moreover, I am not suggesting that lighting control with creative intention is any less important at 3,200 ISO. What I am looking forward to, is being able to play a space/location with more of it's existing atmospherics/dynamics intact.

Blair, when did you get to play with the Helium? I added a new Column for Helium.

I was crewing the Sigma Cine Lens event at the ASC Clubhouse with Duclos Lenses and Jarred sent over his personal camera. The Sigma Cine Lenses looked impressive, and we were just seeing pre-production samples. Seeing them on the lens projector was jaw dropping, geometry and resolution were spectacular. Was quite impressed that Sigma was coming to experienced shooters and asking for feedback. It always makes me shake my head in bewilderment when companies decide to enter our industry without really understanding it. Despite a few mistakes, RED has always been well served by having actual shooters at the helm who know what matters. Perhaps even more impressive in today's world, is their continuing commitment to actually improving their entire ecosystem, rather than just tweaking marketing messages.

Has anyone been able to get any official word on Vista sensor allocation? Have we been pushed behind Panavision? Months just tick by now. I'm glad to be in line, and have been patient like everyone here. I have a helium which I love, but have a really need for the larger sensor, and wide frame of Vista. Hence why I choose Forged over Woven, It would be nice to get something official like we need to provide X number to Panavision, we hope to this by X date, and if things are going well you may be here, give or take X number of months(?). We'd all sign NDA's if information is sensitive.

BTW, anyone waiting, helium is beyond awesome and will be a great temp or permanent solution, I just have special 8K requirements that makes me crave/need VV.

Don't poke at Panavision and make assumptions like that... as much as you guys all love to make and follow your own allocation lists you need to remember there is a much bigger list for dealers and rental houses and military and broadcast and a dozen other segments.

Panavision is one of our largest customers, and they ordered 8k VV sensors before pretty much all of you, back before the DXL even was a dream. They are being very friendly to you guys that have been getting VV sensors to allow you to jump ahead of them as we both finish the DXL, because if they wanted to, they could claim all those sensors they have on order by time stamp and obliterate all your make-believe lists into oblivion.

8K VV sensors take forever to make.. and most of you will continue to wait as I have said many times before. You can jump off that train any time you want to.

Well with this further confirmation that the wait isn't ending anytime soon, are we going to get details on the process of obtaining an 8K Helium replacement/loaner/alternative before the 11th? Are we VV Depositors immediately at the front of the line? Will there be an option through online ordering for us or will it have to be communicated exclusively/directly through our Bomb Squad reps?

I know the word was we'd be reached out to at the appropriate time, but it's now two days out and we have little to no details.

Further information/clarification would be much appreciated.

William, this has pretty much be answered in the Update thread.

The gist of it is that the Helium launch is to make it up to the Scarlet-W folks first since they have not had a camera at all. If you look at the link, in my link, Brent said they will also start the Helium loaner program in October. They will contact us, no need to contact them. Jarred posted in the thread that "we" can sleep in on the 11th. Nothing to be done in terms of ordering for VV customers.
