  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Weapon 8k Queue

Hopeful:
RCX Build 39:
Added: Dragon 8K support

Still too many unanswered questions:

If you just upgraded to a CF Weapon;
Is it a swap or do you need to buy another PL mount for 8k to replace the MG one you paid for with Weapon?
Is it a swap or do you need to buy new OLPF for 8k?

What is the status of PL mount with LDS?
6K OLPFs and Mounts physically don't fit on 8K VV.
Even Epic OLPFs don't work on 6K Weapon as some optical layer has been moved from the OLPF to the sensor.

If you're on the 8K upgrade path, you get the VV with PL mount returned after you sent in your WPN.
The extra OLPFs you might have are not replaced – best guess.

But what about medium format chips like 6x9 etc from way back in the day. I'm still holding my breath for a chip that is larger than Imax.

I honestly dont know if I want medium format...think about the amount of light u might need. Even at T4 it will kill u when u need to pull focus...though...when 6K still looks as good as it looks now on weapon, it will be great to switch from 8K for wideshots to 6K for medium and close-up.

I too have a low number at SO-0142598. Super excited to explore and work with a full frame imager. IMHO the large sensor is Red's most important point of difference with the other top end cameras and the main reason I chose to go Weapon. With the general level of performance becoming so similiar each of the cameras needs its "thing" to stand out. Varicam has its clean 5000asa. Alexa has its DR and traditional ergonomics and Sony has ...........?

I have a CF weapon and it is my understanding that it has most of the hardware already to drop in the 8K chip. I dearly hope that RED honors their loyal customers and offers the 8K chip in the order of the downpayments... but I fear that they may pull a "forged weapon" thing and say that you can get the 8K weapon first if you buy the new "graphite forged 8K Weapon for only an extra $50k and that everyone else will get their's afterwards".

They can take as long as they want to get the technology right, but if they pull another money-making stunt like that again I'm selling my weapon and getting an Arriflex. I really hope they do the right thing. I know that they just shot the new Marvel Movie on the 8K weapons, so they are probably working out the very last bugs now.

Also, regarding the comments that the "chip is too big" and "focus will be too hard". Then use an Epic Dragon or use Super 16. A big chip is definitely not good for everything. Shooting sports is already hard enough with 2/3rds" chips. Personally though, I'd love to use as big a chip as they can make. If they make the equivalent of a 6x9 medium format chip I would buy it today and be in heaven!

Conceptually I believe that it is the filmmakers job to show the audience what to look at, shallow focus is one great way to do that. Lighting, set-design, all the tools of filmmaking really serve that goal in some way. Am I wrong?

I am pretty certain I will not be using the full size of the Full frame sensor for every job. It should suit most TVC shoots. Less convinced on drama shoots although it will be in demand for VFX elements and may suit just specific shots in a production that is using a S35 slice of the sensor. Uncertain until I start using it but the choice is there to use appropriately.

Agreed! It could be very pretty to have the 8K on a wide lens and then switch to 6K for tighter shots etc. I don't always use my weapon at 6K, sometimes I go to 4K. But 6K is definitely prettier to my eye.

...I have a feeling we will be hearing some news in a few weeks.. or just wishful thinking:)

From the "April shipping update" Thread... (Posted on 3-26)

...The next Batch of 8k sensors comes out of the oven next week which is still on track from my last March update. They take 2 weeks to go through the QC process so actual 8k cameras should roll out right around NAB time. Impossible to know how many.. as the 8k are the cream of the crop and very few come out alive. Could be 100 sensors, could be 1 sensor.

My best advice is don't plan your shoots around the 8K... they come in slowly, they go out slowly and are far and few in between. They are one little tiny notch on the dial before the impossible mark.

If there were not so many 8ks out shooting some really big things right now in Atlanta and Japan and London you could almost bet against them even existing.. Straddling the land of Unicorns and Mermaids. And along that vain of unbelievable things.. they are just as extraordinary.

This was a concern raised after one of Jarred's posts some months ago. He assured us that we misunderstood his comments and flatly stated that the early depositors would get our cameras first and that they hadn't even opened up new orders. And as far as I know, they still have not opened up new orders.

I think there will so much to learn from the "Guardians of the Galaxy" shoot in Atlanta.... They are really putting the 8K through a lot and I am excited about the results, both creatively and technically ....

I am happy to standby for a bit until they wrap....

It's suppose to wrap on June. I would love to hear about all the post production processes for 8k, also the use of 8k with performance capture & vfx integration. I'm worried a lot less on 8k the camera, and more on actually using the 8k. I just bought another 100 Tbytes of disk, since I moved to 8k DI ... there's just so much to this. btw my VR (6 camera shots per frame) is 36k per frame, so 8k is just the start of rethinking things. A little 5 minute of film sequence of VR is making me move 79 four gig files. Also would like to know if they are using the exr DWB and how that is working out.

"so many 8ks out shooting some really big things right now in Atlanta and Japan and London"

So many that were ordered before 3am on 4/13?

NAB clean room nonsense with dragon upgrades was tolerable because it was just a reservation, when you hand over $10k things should be different.

Actually, I feel its more like a 30K investment because I know personally I would never have went with Carbon if not for the 8K.

That being said, I think its a good thing that these big productions are getting a few of the early cameras because they put them though the ultimate test and when these films get buzz, they increase the value of your investment in the camera itself.

Yes, we paid upfront for these a year ago, but the reality is now, even if you wanted to spend 50K on the upgrade, you simply can't. We are in a unique position to receive something truly groundbreaking.

Yes it takes forever to make these sensors, but when you receive yours, you know you will be unique for a long time. And RED is not a company that lies, they said they are delivering based on time-stamp, and that's what they will do. I say sit back and enjoy this amazing ride.

So far I've mostly spent the first quarter of 2016 wondering when I'll get all the cool toys I ordered in 2015...
