  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

We had no idea...

Funny thing is that I got so much shit by some friends in Miami, back then as when I put up the 1k deposits I had so little money in the bank that for the month and a half or so to follow I actually had to cut back on food, while fighting against an amputation.

Yet Here were today, with both my legs, didn't starved to death, and RED did turned out not to be a SCAM after all... ;)

I had the chance to order on day 1, even when I was not even able to attend NAB at all, just by phone. Got a 2 digit customer number, so early in the line.

So many things have changed since that point in time:

We got our RED ONE MX, the first 4K movie camera in germany.
We never again shot anything on tape based cameras, never ever.
Tape based workflows almost disappeared. We only very rarely deal with tapes on ingest for customer proejcts - we ourself shoot only files.
European broadcasters switched from PAL to small HD 720p - hey, wow ;-) ?!?
We developed workflows, especially in VFX with greenscreen / bluescreen processing, that by far surpass anything we were able to do on HD, quality wise.
We finished soo many projects "shot on RED" since that point in time.
Film recording is nearly gone (I say nearly, as we still record commercials and trailers every now and then, but expect to see this ending by mid 2013).
We learned so much that we feel able to handle even the most complex projects.
The transition to digital in theater distribution is close to finish. I expect RED Projectors to accelerate the process dramatically (do you need sales agents?)

Thanks to Jim and the fact he had no idea!

Sometimes having no idea how is the best idea you can have when you have an idea!

Cheers,
Axel

I was checking out the Panasonic HVX on DVXuser when I read about this new RED camera. The Titanium R period had already passed but I asked RED for more information on the camera via their website. I filled out the request form and when it came to the part where it asked what Hi Def cameras I currently owned, I answered that I had two Sanyo Xacti 720p cameras. I never got an answer to my request for more information. '-) I just figured they didn't think I was the level of customer they were looking for. But I persisted and lurked on the forum before finally deciding I would put down a deposit for a camera and find a way to afford the extra amount I was prepared to spend.

About a month or two after placing my deposit for the first camera, my imagination ran wild and I figured if I had two cameras I could make movies more efficiently by covering a scene from more than one angle and allow more freedom in edit. So I put down a deposit on a second R-1. Then came the Epic and some dips in disposable income, but I took out a loan to make the Stage 2 and Stage 3 upgrades happen, along with an eventual sale of the Stage 2 R-1.

I've just recently paid off the last loan and am free of debt. And now... Dragons and hopefully a Red Projector by the time those two things are available. I've spent a lot of cold winter days and hot summer nights to curb my utility bills, not to mention years of eating "passed use-by-date" food and almost zero travel expense in order to pay for my equipment.

Let me sum it up this way... I've never had one minute of buyer's remorse.

I might of been late to the game, but I can't believe I own a Red! People flip out when they hear I have one. It certainly commands a lot of respect and I am amazed to have such a great tool

The primary reason we have given priority to the early adopters is because they believed in us, inspired us actually, when we really had no idea what we were doing... but bet that we would figure it out one way or another.

God love the 1st ones. When the 1st 225 (orders from the 1st NAB) say jump... it is "how high on the way up" as far as I'm concerned.

Jim

Sweet! Can I be Dragon #27 or do EpicMs permanently supersede, or is the line gone in favor of whoever registers first when you go live with it? Really looking forward to it!

The funny thing is that I never hesitated to put down that deposit, even though I had seen quite a bit of vaporware at earlier NABs. I frankly had no way of knowing if they could make what they were talking about but I really liked the concepts. It all just made sense to me.

Cheers - #19

That's a pretty cool story Ketch, thanks for sharing.

So you were one of the first 225?

It sucks, I'm in bed and have not been able to sleep at all, it's 6 o clock in the morning and I'm about to attend a shoot at 7.30. This red stuff gives me insomnia.... :)

I almost jumped in line at that first NAB, but for some reason got sidetracked and I hesitated. I ended up with #1110. Now I often wonder how many between that first 225 and me didn't take delivery. I know of a few myself. There were a lot of eager people plunking down money in the beginning who couldn't follow through when the time came and RED didn't take kindly to transferring reservations. Anyway, the funny thing is, I've seen lots of vaporware come along at NAB and other trade shows and I'm always skeptical. RED delivered. From the time I put my money on RED, I also jumped on the wagon for some other promising products along the way. ...Let me count how many of those I actually have in my possession now. Oh, wait, like none. Some of them I even lost money on. Maybe this is the wrong time to bring it up, but ViewFactor still owes me a wireless follow focus kit that I paid for almost 4 years ago! And then there's that moco head they took deposits for. Yep, I'm #11 on the list there... Sure, they're still in business, but WTF... They've made some half-assed peace offerings along the way, but I've never got a refund even though it's been requested on multiple occasions. Which I'd gladly take that. Or the products I paid for. Haven't wanted anything else. Don't need DSLR cages or their take on other parts I already acquired from RED or 3Ality/ET or made myself.

Sorry to step up on the soap box with this, but RED has always delivered and that's a true testament to their character and desire to serve their customers. It's hard out there and RED continuously pulls through where so many others often fail.

Sleep is overrated. Plenty of time for that when you're dead.

Jim you have changed so many lives and made filming more of a everyday hobby for many people. Red has grown and will continue to grow and get bigger with more users everyday and filmmakers using Red cameras. You saved the film industry, and even the music industry.

My gratitude to Jim, Jarred, and the rest of the red team.

Thanks, and keep making Red the best manufacture of digital cinematography!
Ryan

Thinking back, it was pretty much the same with me. I never doubted they would do what they said they would do. It just seemed right.

This story is part of my Life Movie... Hopefully soon to hit Cinemas near you... ;)

As for being one of the first 225, possibly I was, not sure really, but I guess all was against me getting the money to RED, as my Bank denied the charge, and this was not form a Credit Card, as I had none back then, I guess the Bank viewed as a Bogus account were the money was getting deposited to, and then even more my friends insisted telling me it was indeed a SCAM... But I didn't think so... I had to conatc Kelly, super nice form the start, and back and forth we went, till finally my Bank was notified that this was a real account and the first 1k was sent, and later the other 2k for camera 2&3.

Unfortunately at this time I got R1 Serial #349 as first camera, second and third just some time later were 851&852 a sure sign that RED was taking deposits like crazy!!
