Canon 100mm L Macro
Canon 180mm L Macro

Bonus the 180MM L Macro still functions properly with a Canon III 2X Extender effectively giving you 360MM Macro but you'll need a LOT of light.

canon 100macro...vI is great, vII might be even better if that is possible....not sure there are a lot of lenses out there with better optical performance....pretty nice bokeh as well, especially for a macro....

Sorry for stupid question... Did you mean this:

?

Looks like Canon 100 is the good idea because I plan to shoot with panning of image from about 30 cm (12 inches to front of the lens).
And thank you for giving me idea about bokeh. As a starter I almost forgot about F of the macro lenses. Always trying to get lower F numer for lense but with macro it is not a good idea as I see. Because a lot of blur in background is not always good.

Thanks for your help!

the newer version is IS which always comes in handy....
if depth of field is crucial you might look into T/S lenses as well....canon has the 90mm which is ok, i believe there is a schneider 90T/S as well which should be great....

The lens you need for this is a Leica 100mm f2.8 Apo macro or a Voigtlander 125mm f2.5 Apo macro. The Leica has more of a 3D look and the Voigtlander sightly softer Bokeh.

These are the three you should look at in Nikon or Canon Mount:

CANON: Telephoto EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro - $490
NIKON: AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED - $760
ZEISS: Macro 100mm f/2 ZF Makro-Planar T* MF - $1,582

The Zeiss is the best of the three. Take a look at this discussion for more detail> http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?topic=28238.0;wap2

(If Leica mount is an option, then the above-mentioned Leica should also be considered.)

Thanks for your help!

All I afraid now is that I cannot get focused image of jewerly. Close - yes. Focused - afraid not with all 100 and 105mm lenses.
Look at the picture in the first post. It all in focus. With 100mm f2.8 looks like I can get this (this pic from Canon ef 100 f/2.8) at F2.8:

I believe that this pictrue:

have a lot of compositing but watches looks in focus! Possibly I am trying to get very ambicious task but I try to achieve something like this:

Yes you can. Use more light, get in the f8-11 range, and flatten the subject/jewelry to the lens. Your first photo has the watch falling away from camera, this puts less of the watch in the focal plane. If you rotate the watch (like the 2nd pic more of the subject will lay in the focus plane.

YOu just have to fiddle about, you can get the same result as the 2nd photo....dont give up so easy :)

The Leica Macro is a great lens, but the Zeiss and Canon might be easier for you to find.

Sorry but need to say NO, to any other Canon Macro, after the EF 100mm f/2.8L IS, which in Macro will also help you get a better and sharper image, just make sure you don't go over f/8, f/5.6 to f/8 gives you the best absolute spot in this lens optical quality as far as sharpness is concern as well as edge to edge resolution, vs. starting to get softer on edges at wider or closer apertures.

The Canon 180 Macro is a great lens, no doubt, but apart from giving you a more creamier Bokeh (do to the longer Focal) does nothing better then the newer 100mm IS.

The Zeiss 100mm Macro ZF.2 or ZE in canon mount, but if you do have a Nikon Mount camera, then better get the ZF.2 version as it will offer you a manual Iris control which IMO is a must have in Macro more so then any other lens, apart form TS.

As far as lighting goes, you can create effects with small lights, but you'll need a big light or a series of smaller lights behind a Screen or any kind of filtering you can find so ot give a nice spread of uniform soft light to your objects, and you'll need a lot of it at f/8 in order ot create an even illuminated area, similar to what you want to do when shooting cars, but I use this very same technic with faces or full body Beauty Skin shots.

Best of luck!!

Thank you Dane! I got the idea. Photo in the first post was combined from 3 photos actually to avoid focus problems.
Picture with watches was shot with something like this i believe:
photo.ashx

Can anybody describe what the lens used in this picture:

Thanks a lot Ketch! Rgr you about Canon's lenses. Looks like it is the most affordable lens for me. Or possibly without IS (IS version in Russia goes about $1300 but without IS costs about $600).
Looking forward about Zeiss.
Thanks again!

Wow! Zeiss goes more than $2K in Russia.
