Want To Beg: Looking for a free RED One MX

I'll make it simple. I think we would all love to have a Red One camera for free. If everyone acted on that hope, we would all post it on this forum. If we all posted it, the forum would be flooded with thousands of begging posts, and the mods would have to remove them all. This is a buying/selling thread... Therefore, this thread should not exist.

I offered to trade a MacBook Pro 2.5GHz (late 2011 model) for one.

I just bought one for $4k. As i traded my by stage 3.5 and i had all of the accessories.

Perfect camera for my studio so i am selling off my XDCAM HD camera's now (pdw700 and F800)
I better get more than $4k for them as the F800 still sells for over $50k

An F800 doesnt still sell for $50k - its $30k new and is worth about $5k on the used market lol

In Australia with a colour viewfinder and stereo mic, and a base plate with a SOny PDW-F800 is $52k +gst believe me i just checked a few days ago.

That's a serious offer btw... 17" model too.

I think I get you now Andrae...therefore I am happy to take your MacBook Pro off your hands for free for you, I'll even pay for shipping. Or at the very least take off servicing costs etc I am willing to trade, at the very most a three brand new unused Digibeta tapes I have under the house? Keen? I certainly am?? lol;)

My R1MX is going to sit beautifully on my shelf collecting dust while I play on my new laptop after shooting on my EPIC or F3:)

Just having a laugh as this threads a little ridiculous. But then Reduser over the recent times has turned into more a a trading post for gear and little in the way of interesting threads for sure.

seems not many people here are getting Andrae's very sensibly performed sarcasm show to vent his frustration. I too think the Epic drops from 35k to 19k and scarlet drop was negligible compared to the shocking 25k to 4k reduction on the R1mx. This undermines EVERY red owner including those with Epics and Scarlets considering as others have said R1mX shoots a better image than the Scarlet and almost identical image to Epic...

R1MX can compete with Scarlet, but I have to give the upper hand to Epic. Less compression, higher resolution, more framerates at higher resolution, 1080P output, etc. When shot under identical settings, sure things get a lot closer which is why they can be matched fairly well.

In my opinion the RED One MX is a much better camera than the Scarlet. Yes it's bigger and has issues with the Canon mount (unless you get a Birger mount).... but we are still shooting lots of music videos on it. The reasons why I love it are 120 fps, more i/o ports, it's big and looks solid, I can use my EVF and LCD at the same time, black calibration is much faster, media cost is cheap and accessories are now very cheap.

Still with that said... it is a EOL'd product and the manufacturer is still selling it currently for $4000 with a valuable accessory like the SSD reader. Also the same manufacturer does have a competing product that is more popular on the market currently. This does make for a strange situation... cheap product but still lots of value production wise and respect in the market. Even if RED stops selling their Battle Tested units... the price will still be limited to sub $4000 due to it being EOL'd and a flood of used Scarlets selling on the market also. What we've treasured so dearly is now pushed out on the streets and it's now cheap. Yes cheap... what I fear is that will be the new brand reputation for RED products. As a matter of fact... that is the current reality. I'm not wealthy... this is a "working" investment for me... I can't have it cheapened. Soon my clients will either purchase it themselves and I will lose relevance as far as the camera body is concerned.

I can't say I'm a rental shop since I provide my clients with a lot of owner/operator service beyond a rental shop... but what I know in this industry is people don't aspire to cheap... especially in a camera body. If the RED is now dirt cheap... they will start looking elsewhere for a camera with perhaps more quality. That could be image quality, build quality, better workflow... but they will start looking. Even if it's just to shoot with something else thats different than everyone else.

I will even go further and say this... if the Sony F55 gets released at 25 to 40K. Many people will hold it as a more quality camera even though the EPIC beats it in some technical specs such as native RAW, resolution and FPS. The selling of the RED One MX at 4K and the dropping of the price of the EPIC to 19k... helps to make it look like our cameras are the king of resolution and fps... but not quality. Better quality is not often looked at as being cheap. Hence why a 90k camera on the market doesn't necessarily have to drop their price to compete with RED. They can just keep marketing quality to the consumer. In the case of that 90k camera... they do have the releases to back it up.

So say that $90000 camera manufacturer drops the price of their next camera to $50000. That camera which reflected quality before to the professional market and is still a high price camera relative to the new market place... now released with long sought after features. People will rush to buy the product at the new affordable price... that cannot bode well for us as owners of the cheaper brand. Cheap then has to become cheaper... unless quality is introduced back into the equation. How much cheaper can we get? If RED wants to be a prosumer brand... that's great for them... but I'm not onboard that train. I bought into RED for quality... my clients pay me for my knowledge in operating quality professional equipment. 6k, 8k, 10k, 12k... won't matter without quality.

The Sony F55 is competitive "on paper" because of quality features... the global shutter, higher iso sensitivity, higher dynamic range and built in ND's. The ARRI Alexa is a quality camera for its filmic emulation and better workflow. Lets lead in quality instead of price slashing.
