  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

VR - RED/Facebook camera

Goggles the mind!

Looks exciting!

Just seen...

As someone knee deep in the middle of a VR project, i'm not totally sure what this really means. VR is such an utter pain, especially stereo 360. Stitching, fixing, and all that is very time consuming but the one consistent thing is that VR projects are usually huge DOF and larger sensors aren't so good at that. So i am guessing that the sensor in the hydrogen is the target.

FB are also working with other camera manufacturers.

For hydrogen i am assuming that a stereo pair of cameras would enable some depth reconstruction and they mention a line about that. You can use left/right with disparity maps to regenerate the depth of the scene but it's never that accurate either. There is latitude for better code in that area.

But it's very much a empty article in terms of content.

So i'm interested in finding out what it *really* means - i mean Red were never into VR, isn't that the point of Hydrogen - not VR.

cheers
Paul

Interesting...

Man I sure hope this is about volume/mesh capture and not just 360deg video. All 360 and 360+3D video capture and delivery I've seen is so flawed I think it does a huge disservice to public perception of VR and therefore adoption of VR technology. 360 vr seems to me to be something that needs to be put on the back burner for a decade until they can figure out how to shoot and distribute it effectively or augment it properly with CG VR.

I like the Iris Retina Scan feature which allows FB to reach deep into my soul and monetize it ;-)

Wow - first post for me on Reduser in awhile.

I was in the front row of this presentation at F8 with Brian from Facebook and Uday from RED, and was also interviewed for their launch video. You actually hear my voice in the video but don't see my face. ; )

As someone who has been doing nothing but VR for a few years now... I'd contribute the following:

1) First and most importantly, this is not a casual announcement. The computational imaging team at Facebook are some of the best in the world at what they do, and I don't have to comment on Reduser about the smarts of the RED imaging team. This is a serious effort by serious people.

2) The combination of RED sensor technology + the possibility of volumetric and 6DOF image tech from FB provides the industry something that has not existed before. We have built RED rigs before to do high-resolution 360º capture. And when it's done correctly, it looks magnificent. This effort takes it to the next level.

VR is all about immersion and presence. This is a big and important step towards raising the bar for creators and consumers and bringing people even deeper into creative worlds.

Plus - as a VFX tool for shooting plates and creating depth maps, etc., this thing will be nuts.

I’m sure that the technology will be top notch, but until the politics of FB align with rights of users this is one more thing I’m gonna have to take a hard pass on. I’m already planning on removing myself from their platforms soon (WhatsApp, Insta, FB), and even incredible tech doesn’t outweigh my concerns.

Sure but . . . the issue is not with FB. It's with the entire USA not putting a value on Privacy the way some in Europe do. Our politicians listen to the money source and to protests. Google and 50 companies you have never heard of are in as deep or more than FB. The FB hearing was pure theater where none of the essential questions were asked much less followed up on. Folks seem to feel about Privacy like they do Artificial Intelligence; very ambivalent about something which will blow up reality as we know it and have huge consequences for us as individuals

My feeling on Privacy:
I know I will never have privacy again, I only ask to control and benefit from who I digitally am in the same way I would have the rights to any IP I produce. Why should FB or anyone financially benefit from my IP with zero compensation to me. I own me. Right?

Problem is that our Gov and the Tech Industry cut a deal long ago: no push back on privacy issues as long as the Feds get first taste.

Anyone here heard of Fats Waller? He sang the song "The Joint is Jumpin" set in a dance hall speak easy. And at the end sirens are heard and Fats tells everyone not to worry cause he's got power down at the jailhouse, but his final words are "Don't give your right name."

Ha! Problem now is that you don't have to agree to FB's T&C's or even be on their platform . . . you are already triangulated by those who are like your family members and old classmates. Then they purchase massive amounts of other big data (from Credit, Retail, Medical, Travel, LinkedIn, Search Engines, Mobile / Security Tech, Legal, Public Records . . . and your Samsung refrigerator which scans all the UPC codes of your food to go with their hot mic TV sets) then build a profile of you that is beyond your comprehension as to the predictive accuracy. Then who ever wants to purchase that data package to target you into a specific actions like, let's say, vote for a particular candidate . . . you are pretty much helpless since you have no idea your buttons are even being pushed.

All that said, I'm taking a break from the gee wiz gadgets that have the potential to intrude into my life further.

Heh, I have a 25 YO fridge. My freezer is more like 15 to 20 but it does have a buzzer if the door isn't completely closed. I do have a pretty new LG 4k Oled, so they've probably got me there. (Still, I'm not getting rid of that even if it is recording me sitting in front of it naked. '-)

Oh, and I'm not registered to vote.
