  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

VR - RED/Facebook camera

I like the Iris Retina Scan feature which allows FB to reach deep into my soul and monetize it ;-)

LOL..

Maybe at least send you adds for contact lenses...

Anyone here heard of Fats Waller? He sang the song "The Joint is Jumpin" set in a dance hall speak easy. And at the end sirens are heard and Fats tells everyone not to worry cause he's got power down at the jailhouse, but his final words are "Don't give your right name."

Random / collective associative monologue ... Sure :-)

I LOVE Fats Waller he is a genius and always get my Echo/Alexa to play a few fats Waller tunes to get my butt going ...

^^^ There are a few things that are kinda "Messed up" in this "film"/ performance but the Audio tracks on this famous tune kinda go better I think ! Lyrical genius but definitely not the most PC thing by todays standards... Incredible wit.

I think OFF TOPIC is a good place to take a "Read" or temperature on the Face Book "Thing"...

I wonder what my Alexa is data mining on me lol.

Sure but . . . the issue is not with FB. It's with the entire USA not putting a value on Privacy the way some in Europe do. Our politicians listen to the money source and to protests. Google and 50 companies you have never heard of are in as deep or more than FB. The FB hearing was pure theater where none of the essential questions were asked much less followed up on. Folks seem to feel about Privacy like they do Artificial Intelligence; very ambivalent about something which will blow up reality as we know it and have huge consequences for us as individuals

My feeling on Privacy:
I know I will never have privacy again, I only ask to control and benefit from who I digitally am in the same way I would have the rights to any IP I produce. Why should FB or anyone financially benefit from my IP with zero compensation to me. I own me. Right?

Problem is that our Gov and the Tech Industry cut a deal long ago: no push back on privacy issues as long as the Feds get first taste.

That's my thing too...

I have always maintained that privacy would be rarest commodity in the future and also the points you made about being "Triangulated" into things inadvertently is also true.

Definitely as you say about privacy / encryption and the reach of the government ... Is it not the case that in UK doing the "nanny" state thing that the Gov' has all the back door master keys for digital devices and that ultimately things in the USA are a bit more secure ? (shrugging shoulders).

The biggest problem I have with WEB / FB and the like I lead a very multifaceted life and It makes no sense what so ever to mash that up all together... Why do my business associates need to know what my kids look like, what I had for brunch or brouse through ancient holiday photos... Well I only have one photo on FB and that's it and the friends I decided to have were "horse" related ...

Am I missing something...

In some ways I wish there were three webs that you could have separate identity or passports for... One business universe... One family and friends universe... And one for all the other crazy and fun sh*t Universe. The point being is that they don't connect or cross reference each other (deliberately engineered to prevent that).

So the idea is that You could have a completely separate "handle" for the fun crazy universe, so you are anonymous BUT you have to have that identity always (more or less as a "passport"). In your day to day BUSINESS life in the business "Universe" you are you BUT it does not connect to anything from your "friends and family universe" nor the "Crazy and fun Universe" Similarly friends and family universe can be a switchable identity I think as I have known people that DID get stalked as result of FB and hence had to change their on line identities to protect their families...

I think there are a lot of things Effed with the WEB that way, and lack of "Healthy" boundaries always leads to trouble.

VR is all about immersion and presence.

Immersion and presence are only perceptual aspects.

Perceptual aspects of illusion.

Wow - first post for me on Reduser in awhile.

I was in the front row of this presentation at F8 with Brian from Facebook and Uday from RED, and was also interviewed for their launch video. You actually hear my voice in the video but don't see my face. ; )

As someone who has been doing nothing but VR for a few years now... I'd contribute the following:

1) First and most importantly, this is not a casual announcement. The computational imaging team at Facebook are some of the best in the world at what they do, and I don't have to comment on Reduser about the smarts of the RED imaging team. This is a serious effort by serious people.

2) The combination of RED sensor technology + the possibility of volumetric and 6DOF image tech from FB provides the industry something that has not existed before. We have built RED rigs before to do high-resolution 360º capture. And when it's done correctly, it looks magnificent. This effort takes it to the next level.

VR is all about immersion and presence. This is a big and important step towards raising the bar for creators and consumers and bringing people even deeper into creative worlds.

Plus - as a VFX tool for shooting plates and creating depth maps, etc., this thing will be nuts.

Hi Lucas,

So how is this different from what we do now?

So 360 stereo capture rig (sufficiently spaced cameras for depth), create disparity maps, then depth maps and so on?

As you know this is the staple diet of VR post.

Creating point clouds and depth from moving images and perspective as well (i.e. Camera Trackers in NukeX, PFTrack and so on)

What's new here? Different approach? Better results?

My issue is that beyond a tech demo, this stuff is really hard to get right, dealing with real world images, details and so on make the process very tough. So much post work in stitching, warping and fixing. You can get 70% quickly but that last 30 is where the meat is. Very rarely do disparity maps and depth work well, very scene dependent. (Working on something in a forest right now, so feature detection is mush)

So i'm curious to see what you think?

cheers
Paul

Hey Paul,

Unfortunately, I can't comment on any specifics at all. But you're right - this stuff is really hard to get right. I think this is getting it right. I'm sure we will be able to talk more about in the months to come...
