  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Well said and I will join you in buying out anyone thats missing there money.

View Factor is a couple brothers and some help, not Sony, Not Panasonic, not even Red, but man what treat its going to be to work with these units.

Now I must say VF could have done a better job at communication sometimes,
but when your busting your hump 10 to 12 hours a day its tough. Maybe in the future product ship dates will be held until the product is truly ready to ship.

All I know is that the boys at Viewfactor are my heros for bringing a product to market that can compete with the bigs at a fraction of the cost.

Go on with your bad selves

Paul,
I so much agree with you on your thread...thanks for posting it!!!

Other stuff...
Red missed their dates by 6 months..that's ancient history.
But the pain's gone, a nice product was produced at great price!!

Curt's predicament looks very similiar.
Good designs by smart people....however there was probably 100 things that could and often did go wrong.

There's a project delivery cliche that goes like this....
"your product can be time, on budget and high quality....pick any 2!

Curt isn't going to give you a crap product and it's going to be cheap but he's doing it for the first time and all those pitfalls/quality issues that'll be picked up over long development life cycles with a team of designers, from expensive production house blah blah.....aren't.
You want low risk...go to Preston/Bartec...get out you're wallet.
But the same way when we signed up for Red, I didn't hear anyone say..
'Hang on, I'll pay 400% more and make sure delivery lifecycle is 2-3 years to guarantee a completely robust and quality product.
We like to hold Curt to his word but don't care how he does the magic.
All that is 'conveniently' forgotten...the high risks that goes with innovative, low price products from cottage industries.

If I sound like i'm preaching..I apologise and I realise i'm probably more at fault than anyone in blaming Red or Adobe or someone else who has tried to give their all to me/us and all i've done is be completely one eyed and focused on how wrong they are and how much I'm let down and not bothered to think how much they're trying to give to me.
So I've kicked them in the teeth. Don't do that..!!

He sounds like he's fucking sweating and ripping his heart out for you.
Give him a break.....
D

This is for all you complainers:

Do you own a RED? If so, how did you ever keep your sanity?

If it's such a big deal to you, get a refund and go with one of the lesser, more expensive brands.

Do us, and VF a favor, and save it. It's old.

Get to work instead of living here complaining.

Enjoy your holidays with your families/friends -

Aloha.

I do own a RED, and sanity was maintained with them because as has been explained AD NAUSEUM in this thread; RED had delay after delay but on any given date when they said either shipping or an update would happen it happened (usually the update, but whatever, ANY timely communication is how you keep your invested customers sane). Comparing the way RED handled their launch vs this product's debut is comparing apples to oranges, especially considering that we weren't fully capitalizing RED's product launch.

If it's such a big deal to you, get a refund and go with one of the lesser, more expensive brands.

Again, this is just as tired as the rest of your post. I love what VF is doing, the product looks great and it's at a great price point. What I'm trying to do is help VF avoid these problems in the future. It's so ridiculously simple that I can't even believe we're still talking about it. ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS COMMUNICATE. And most importantly, on the dates that THEY THEMSELVES give.

Get to work instead of living here complaining.

Yeah, that's the thing sport. We ARE working.

Said event should occur on 1 March 09.
Maybe sooner but don't count on it!

Everyone happy now?

Now that's perfect!!! It would almost be in sync with the delay RED had on their cameras :innocent:

If only we have to send back the first 100 units as well :w00t: :w00t: :w00t:

I think Dominic has forgotten how it was waiting for RED. Or he never really did considering he's 28XX something.

I just want to say. It's ok to have frustration and it's ok to vent it, but what bothers me is you guys saying that the guys are not communicating. Just because they're not posting everyday?

I've sent them a mail now and then and yes it might have taken a couple of days, but they always answer back. They have in the past been on their website and updated their delivery schedule, not everyday but around when needed... and they've been in this thread updating the schedule and so on.

That they're not doing so now is because, AS WE ALL KNOW, they're just about to ship so I have a strong feeling they're BUSY.

Something not mentioned yet: ET has tremendous delays too... but they neither sell nor ask for reservations until they feel (obsessively it seems) ready and their product is in the market; RED only takes 10% reservations so it´s more than tolerable; VF instead has some people´s full payment since a year ago in some cases, and this is what drives people crazy!

True, but there's a lot more involved in this design then in ET's. Not saying that ET's design is not brilliant, IT IS, but it's mostly CNC parts.

Also lets not forget that these guys are not eccentric billionaires HAHAHAA

11 months from order to ship. Tolerable because of decent communication and relatively small deposit.

Wow, I'm not sure if you're joking here or just don't read English well but I guess I'll respond anyway.

Nobody is saying daily updates are necessary. The very idea is completely ludicrous.

What I'm saying, AGAIN, is that if you project a date months beforehand, then you should either deliver by that date or give an UPDATE on or before that date that you'll miss the projection. This means VF would have only had to make a post here and on their website around 6 times. Maybe 10-15 minutes total time spent for each update. The pricing/engineering on this item is good enough that they wouldn't even have to explain in much detail WHY they're missing the date, just say something on or before that date.

It's pretty simple. And even though it's getting exhausting saying it, I'm only trying to be constructive and help VF avoid these problems in the future because I like what they're doing and I like the company.

Hmmm I'm not sure if your rude or plain out stupid, but judging from former posts by you, it's not the latter.

IMHO they've spent those 15min, over and over again. That's what makes you guys seem so pathetic when you post the very next day for an update.

on the slim chance view factor IS reading this entire threat up to this post...
i was thinking that sometimes it might be the best to add a few days (or even weeks or months depending of the projects size) to a deadline or an update or whatever...

it's the "scotty" move. you know scotty from star trek? asked by kirk how long it would take to fix that warp engine he'd say 30 minutes if in fact it would take him only 15. that way he get's the appreciation he deserves when he's finished ahead of time.

i realize that the moment you have to inform your captain about the engine being not ready for another couple of months instead of weeks, is not a comfortable one - especially if you actually believe it will in fact take you much less. BUT - the freedom you gain that way saves you a lot of headaches and is worth it most of the time. and a headache free - erm - head, surely DOES come handy when fixing a warp engine...

hope that wasn't me being a smart ass - 'cause i do that some times.

Not having a go at you or trying to slag off, but my point is that they do read this post and they do reply.

Curt answered in this thread only 5 days ago... so that's in my world not that long ago. Maybe I'm mistaking or extremely tolerant but a working week ago is just simply not that long ago for me.

sorry fredrik - it seems that that came out wrong. i was merely revering to the fact that the entire thread was rather long. i am aware of the fact that view factor is watching this thread and do actually reply.

by the way - my post wasn't revering to any other post so far. (in case that came out wrong too). just a thought i had because i do it the "scotty way" every now and then as a dp when i have to light a complex scene. except my only client is the 1st ad...

Man… I don't know who's being pathetic, but please suffer that some of us are not 100% satisfied and stop defending VF so agressively, when nobody is actually attacking them.

If the situation suits you as is, well… fine, nobody is adressing to you personally or hold you responsible for anything, so please cool off a bit:calm:

VF have indeed spent those 15 min many times, but generally a couple weeks too late, that's the main point you continiously overlook, wich gets a little boring I must say.

Well I'm not really defending them. I'm more tired of sitting in the car hearing the little brother asking (for the 11th time) if we're there yet :sarcasm:

Well maybe the big brother shouldn't have said were almost there.... Look, this can go back and fourth all day. Simple fact is they've missed many shipping dates and that's only for the first 10.

That's pretty sad if they're reading all these posts and aren't replying. I'd rather think they are busy and not even looking here.

I don't want updates anymore, they're useless... Just let us know when UPS comes by.

Here's where I stand on this issue... I'm going to keep waiting. I have faith in the VonBadinski boys. I know it's been a painful ride, but I'm confident they will deliver and the price for what they offer is amazing compared to anyone else in the industry.

That said... Curt, John, I'm on my knees here... I need my Impero and motors soon. I plan to use them on a shoot January 16-18 as a real world performance test. Then I have a critical job where I will need the remote control ability on January 30 thru Feb 15. For the latter job, if I don't have your kit here and working, I will have to rent or perhaps even buy another solution that I don't want to spend money on. I'm getting rental and purchase quotes on these alternate solutions right now and the numbers are friggin' scary.

One question I would like to know is if the unit is fused or protected for reverse polarity. I have been sending my Bartech back for repairs about 5 times a year due to someone reversing polarity either on the 2-pin lemo that plugs into the receiver or the D-Tap end. This is annoying to say the least. I also have in big writing to make sure you line up the red dots when connecting and also tell everyone that rents and it still happens. Anton Bauer should have made a connector for power especially that could not be reversed as well as the 2-pin lemo not being used for power. Please add this protection if it is not already there.

Everyone... still on the firmware update code. The bootloader that reads from the USB drive is a little tricky but Im almost there. We have 40 motors assembled and about 16 Imperos. We are cleaning up the last minute stuff like frame ramping and a few other goodies that we will announce after shipping. BTW... the Red One seems to not like external frame ramping. I tried a 0.04166 second (24FPS) square wave out of impero and it just bogged the camera down. I think Stuart is going to have to chime in at some point and let us know if externalramping is ever going to happen. The frame ramping should work fine on any other camera system though... panavision, arri, sony etc. We are gong to be selling some pre-marked stickers that can be put on the marking rings and they will go from 1 to 120 FPS. If you put the impero in frame ramping mode then all you have to do is spin the knob to go from one rate to another. We'll update the manual on this next week.

If all goes to plan I'll have this firmware locked up by tomorrow afternoon as we can start shipping units right after christmas day. Sorry this is taking so long on this guys.

One other thing to keep in mind guys.... We took peoples hard earned money up front for these products they have a right to be angry and inquisitive when we don't meet anticipated delivery dates so don't go too hard on them when they post questions and observations. We are taking all of this to heart and are doing the best we can to get these out asap.

Steve... everything is reverse polarity protected.

thanks for updates
