  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

We'll be making an interface adapter plate with through holes for exactly these kinds of rigs, fear not. Just catching up on the APU-AB plates... we'll have pictures to show tomorrow.

Looking forward to the AB pics! Are you able to give a rough shipping date?

Last week when we were running a batch of battery plates something went wrong with the CNC and the holes for the shoulder screws on the plates were not machined to proper dimensions. We had to re-machine a bunch of plates and then get them re-anodized. We think that some of those plates slipped through to several customers. They have been notified and we will be sending replacements. We will be resuming shipments on Tuesday and should have existing orders taken care of shortly.

Hi Curt,

I received your email about the possible machining malfunction. Since I will not have my Scarlet to mount it on for several weeks (at least), is there a good way to test if this plate is in working condition when it arrives?

Thanks!
Adam

They can indeed work if you get the "pass through" bolts (not the official name) similar to those used on the RED DSMC Top Handle. These bolts are thin at the end with no threads and finish with threads, so they can go through the first threaded area and screw into the secondary attachment. You will have to find the right length, but they should work. Worth a shot.

You're thinking of captive machine screws, similar to the screws that are on our top plate and sidearms.

I'd originally planned on making pass-through holes on the battery plate to enable screwing directly into brackets [ET's Speedy Clamp was at the top of my list]. In the end we decided against it since it would require a complete disassembly of the battery plate to install. Once the quick-release mechanism went in, well... it gets complicated. Captive screws are also difficult to come across as standard items - we have all of our captive screws custom machined for us.

The upcoming interface adapter plates will be the easiest and cleanest way for people to do it. I just don't want people to open up their plates and wonder "what were these guys thinking?" :)

So, you are working on a solution for mounting the APU on rails? That would be perfect and make the APU very flexible :) I believe I would use my v-mount batteries railmounted 65% of the time.

Best regards,
J.M.

Brook - so what you're talking about would be an adapter for the current APU-IDX plate?
Not a whole new battery plate, correct?

There are other, cheaper solutions for mounting V-Mount batteries to rails for use with RED cameras. The beauty of this plate (at least, the reason I'm drawn to it) is that it's the easiest, cleanest, cheapest (that I've found), rail-free method to attach V-Mount batteries to the camera.

And when you do find them they're in bizarre not-useful sizes and you'd end up designing your part to match some screws instead of the other way around.

Are we the only two people on the planet who need these things?! C'mon McMaster-Carr...

Please point me to the cheaper ways of mounting v-mount batteries to Epic/Scarlet cameras using rails, as I'm unable to find any solutions in another price range. Anyways, it would be great to be able to do both with this unit. Directly to the camera body, or on the rails for shoulder balance, depending on the situation.

Jon,

Coming soon. Be patient we only have so many hours in a day :)

Here you go, guys! APU-AB. Had to go through a few final tweaks... :)

Heheh, typo, my mistake! It is its own standalone plate... separate from the APU-IDX.

Functionally, the APU-AB is identical to the APU-IDX. All of the same features and functionality apply. :) [except for the obvious difference that one is Anton Bauer and one is IDX/V-mount]
