Hi there!

I have a weird problem with my epic.
For unknown reason I got these vertical stripes on some of the shots.
It happens once or twice for a day shoot.

Has anyone came across similar issue?

Any solutions???

Thanks!
Jakub

P.S. the attached photo is an enlarged piece of frame.

Are you sure it's on the shots and not only in RedcineX?
i have had some vertical stripe/tear on some of my shots, but it always turns out that they just show up in redcinex and not when viewed elsewhere.

Hello
You should contact RED support and open a ticket about this issue, they will probably ask for a R3D frame and camera log to be able to identify the problem.
I reported a very similar case a year ago and they were later able to reproduce it and fixed our camera last december.

What lens mount were you using ?
Our problem was clearly related to PL /i pins shortcutting when changing lens in quick situations. I was able to nail it down as the rare times it happened it was always after installing a new lens.

FWIW my issue was visible in camera preview mode when zoomed at 100% and was fixed only by camera restart.
So for a few months, I was used to always check this after any lens change and doing it carefully to avoid any electrical shortcutting of the pins.

Hi Michael.

Thank you for your response!
It appears that problem is not conected to redcine-x...

How did red fix your camera?
Did you have to send it or it was a firmware problem?

Could you please explain to me how does the lens change affect the sensor? I'm using PL mount indeed.

Thanks!
Jakub,

It shouldn't be possible to short lens pins simply by changing lenses! - how did they fix the problem?

Not sure if it was a physical problem related to the mount itself or with my specific camera but they asked me to send both in to fix the problem.
If you can confirm it happened on clips right after a lens change and the problem appeared on all clips until the camera was shut down it might be the exact same issue.

If you never encountered it there's a good chance it only affects specific cameras or mounts and again if you insert the lens carefully it does not happen, only happened when I changed lens alone and quickly in a dark environment (zeiss superspeed lenses without any i/ pins) and misaligned it and had somehow shortcut the pins by rotating the lens to find the locking position.

Best to have Jakub contact RED and report back when he has more info, but I lived with this issue for over 6 months as it rarely occurred, was not a random bug happening in a middle of a take, and once I knew a simple zoom in would allow me to confirm all was OK I never lost a single clip again...

With regularity in the apparent artefact, my bet might come down on a rare circumstance where a pin might be making a resistive or even slightly open contact and setting up a resonant circuit between camera and lens electronics powerful enough to bleed through into the image processor or whatever the magic is called in redspeak. Alternatively, an intermittent, then continuous correct connection might be enough to initiate a false signal in the system somewhere if a lens is changed in haste. Then again, it all might be just plain broken. Please do not let my pet theories send you off on a dead-end chase.

Thanks for all replies!

Do you really thing it might be the mount pin issue?
I'm using film lenses (canon k35) that has no electronics in it...

Robert,

Do you thing that when using lenses without electronics in it can cause a "resonant circuit" ?

did you sent a R3D frame and camera log to RED yet ?
I'm pretty sure they are the best ones to help solve this issue.
The one I had a year ago that is looking VERY similar was clearly happening with shortcutting i/pins when changing a lens (also using non electronic lens).
Looking a clip before the one with the problem may give a clue as if it is happening always after a lens change. In my case it never happened on a cold boot or without a lens change that would create the problem until next reboot.

QUOTE: Do you think that when using lenses without electronics in it can cause a "resonant circuit" ?

If you are using manual lenses, I doubt there will be an issue involving the lens control circuit but who knows? To eliminate any chance a pin may be making contact with the rear of the lens body, maybe try covering the lens control circuit pins inside the mount with a piece of adhesive tape. One pin might be riding slightly higher and touching something if the lens body itself is protruding a little more rearwards than it should. If you are "bottle-opening" the lenses instead of keeping them dead square-on when offering them up to the mount, there just might be a very remote chance you might be touching a pin with a curved metal edge. - I think now there may be another issue with your camera. The advice of other respondents to your query to report the problem to RED would be the best course to follow.
