  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

V-Raptor EVF?

PortKeys Oeye Red - Image is ok, noisy fan, big/clunky shape, has some extra buttons which may be able to control Raptor in the future which would be really useful , but when I asked they said only dsmc2 support - I wasnt able to test as I tried the version that didnt have the extra red buttons. Someone did say it worked on Komodo?

PortKeys fixed the fan noise issue some time ago—the one I bought early 2021 is quiet.

Why did Red not supply The LEMO port the Raptor so as to use the existing Red EVF? There must be plans for a new one ! Raptor is unlikely to get on many big productions without an EVF option.

Wow yeah to have the ability to plug in via an adapter to use the OLED Bomb on the Raptor would be amazing.

JST/Zacuto Kameleon pro - diopter poor, image is small and blurry. noisy fan. No On/Off button - really stupid.

I totally dissagree. Image is big and diopter is enough tunable. The fan is ok (ususally the your breath makes more noise). And the image is really nice and big in the "full screen" mode. The only down side it the design : the fixing point is on the right where you usually want to clear off for your lens and mattbox... but there are some ways around it (I'm using the recoil)
I also loved the Blackmagic modded one but it died on a shoot. Not sure if it's about reliability or the mod that made it die (after 2 years of use).

See you
Patrick

Yeah, i need to know which way to go as I need an EVF for my housing for my future Raptor. Come on Red lets get this sorted!

It blows my mind that after 9 months the camera does not have a viewfinder. How does Red expect a production to use a Raptor without one?

IMO, if RED wants to compete with ARRI for the serious pro market they have to offer a proper VF. The rental only DXLs from PV include a nice EVF, but AFAIK they are not available anywhere else. If, in fact, the NRE and production cost of a significantly better EVF would be too high for a short run product what's the answer?

This might be nutcase, but... what about a high quality diopter solution for a modern cell phone? Creating such a thing would be far easier than developing a VF with all the electronics, etc. It also might be a product that could be sold into other markets besides camera operators, making the juice more worth the squeeze. Cell phones also have their own batteries and could potentially host an updatable app like REDControl... Just thinking out loud, incorporating a smartphone into the RED ecosystem is hardly a slam dunk, but hard to resist the "what if".

Cheers - #19

I do agree that a lag less, great diopter, with mechanical shutter (old scool film camera type) EVF from RED for 2500$ would be greatly needed.

We are getting close to Christmas ;-)

Mechanical Shutter? Everybody has abandoned this.

My DSMC2 OLED EVF was around $4500 at launch if I recall right. Don't know where it will land, but hopefully closer the $2500 side rather than the $20K+ side of some of the crazier good EVFs out there.

All I'm looking for is small, good quality color, very clear picture, likely OLED, extremely good optics, decent focus control for all eyes, silent or near silent operation, nice comfy eyecup that semi-securely attaches.

Bonuses would be flip out LCD of some sort if we can only have one RMI connected display or if it features RMI + SDI. If it's SDI only, that barely matters as you'll need the Touch to interface with the camera. Wouldn't mind a molded hard case with a zipper. Ended up doing that for me EVFs over the years to keep them safe in cases.

Once we get "there" I think a 5" screen might be desired by some too.

I just saw a prototype from denz. It is a heated optics front replacement for the RED OLED viewfinder.
If RED joins this project to create a new and better EVF ... denz is well known for its optical viewfinders.

With news of a S35 Raptor, I was suddenly enthused about the potential of upgrading from my Helium (I own no LF glass, and lots of S35 glass). But then I remembered that there was no proper EVF. Then Arri just announced their new S35 sensor camera, and I thought, "They have a really good EVF, maybe I'll consider a switch to Arri, after being a RED owner since 2008." RED, you should be concerned about losing market share over not having an EVF. I can't be the only one thinking this way.

I’m with you there.

Yeah, so far so good.

Really hope red puts out a dsmc3 evf sometime soon! Raptor is looking really great but I’ve been shooting with various red evf’s for almost a decade now. Can’t imagine buying/shooting on a dsmc3 if there’s not a proper evf!
