So I'm sitting here waiting for my side handle. Just hanging out, wishing I could go outside and shoot. Figured I better get some V-Mount packs to tide me over.

Unfortunately the Switronix plate is out of stock. Because the LEMO connectors are backordered forever since I believe RED bought them all. So I've got a shoot next week I'd really like to use the Scarlet on, and I'm getting bored of taking pictures of my kitchen.

Now, at first I hesitated to make this post. I'd prefer not to have my colleagues around the world thinking I am the jankest ghetto RED op around. Ideally I'd prefer a Switronix plate or something, but they are out of stock, and I hear they have hot glue and zip ties in them anyway, so why not.

So, the Budget Buddy® ™ V-Mount Setup made from the following:

The excellent Cinemaoxide V-Mount Plate Adapter $169
RED XLR to Lemo Cable $120
Generic e-bay V-Mount plate $49
AXRTEC V-Mount 89WH battery $129 (which now appears to be $229 that I go to buy some more ... wtf)

I originally got the XLR cable because I needed the RED Lemo to make a custom power cable for my helicopter. So I did that, and put a molex connector on it. So I just had to put a matching molex on the v-plate. No problemo. Total cost including the 1 V-mount battery = $467

Works great. Only bummer is the generic ebay plate doesn't match the standard hole pattern. So it mounts a little higher than ideal to the cinema oxide adapter.

Oh, and here is my current charging apparatus until I buy a 4 way. Or maybe I wont? This guy can put out 20 amps (which is more than the batteries can take in), but I could charge 10 v-mount packs at once at a slow 2amps. It's my regular helo lipo charger in LION mode. I'll have to make up some cables though.

Hope my side handle comes soon.

JFYI - if desperate - why not get the RED BATTERY BELT CLIP? Either the DSMC or RED ONE with the B1-B2 adapter (which is what I have). They both are listed as in stock and cost much less then any of the back-mounted back-ordered versions. It will get you out of the kitchen and help at later date with hand-held operation, as it also keeps your camera lighter...

Doesn't the DSMC Battery Belt Clip have an updated-for-Epic end on it, making the adapter unnecessary?

EDIT: Oops! Just realized my misunderstanding. Sorry.

Quick question:
alreday have an ebay v-mount with d-tap for my canon setup.
If i was to buy an dtap - xlr cable and a xlr - lemo 1b 6pin cable.
Would that work? If yes, why aren't people doing that?
There must be some downs to that system..
thanks for any help, i'm seriously considering buying those cables.

or is that exactly what the op did? i'm a little confused...

Yeah I'm a little confused by it too.

Any more info would be great. I'm just confused as to how he installed that XLR to LEMO so cleanly.

point is, you don't want to run a D-tap as your camera mains, i think its just too unstable.
you can instead, what i did, get a battery plate (in my case AB) with XLR 4 pin and then hook up the xlr-lemo cable from RED. Or like the OP, actually build that connection inside the plate.

This is what I'm doing and it seems to work fine. You may have to be careful with some d-taps though, since some are rated for only 50W and Scarlet pulls just over 50W with accessories. Most people will tell you this shouldn't be done, but the people I have heard from on reduser who are using this method have not reported any problems and neither have I. Personally I kind of like the modularity of it. If I wanted to I could throw my battery in a backpack (or back seat for car shots) and do away with the plate altogether since my batteries have d-taps built in. Just be careful about polarity, I'd try to double check polarity on any new d-tap outlet I use and make sure you plug it in the right way since some d-taps will fit both ways.

Pretty sure he cut off the XLR and plugged the appropriate wires into the plate's internal wiring. Most such plates are designed for attaching bare wires internally.

Yup.

It is pretty simple. Don't do it if you are not familiar with electronics/wiring/soldering. But if you are, it is childs play.

Pinout for lemo is in the Scarlet ops guide. There are 2 positive pins (wires) and 2 negative pins (wires). All 4 need to be wired. So the 2 positive in the RED XLR cable (or custom cable you make) go to the positive in the v-mount plate, and the 2 negative go to the negative wire in the v-mount plate. I should mention that the only reason I used the RED XLR cable was to get the Lemo plug which was backordered. But it did make it even easier since I could just look at how they wired the XLR, cut it off, and solder to the wires in the v-mount plate.

Easy stuff.

Is there any place to source just the lemo cable/connector? Seems to me that'd be even cheaper than hacking a RED XLR-to-lemo cable ($180 is serious money).

Does the the d-tap wattage depend on the battery or something else? I know RED Bricks are rated at 70wH accessories running off d-tap and Scarlet draws less around 60wH.

Hey Matt, any chance for a picture of the wiring/internals. I don't have the pieces in front of me and would really like to know what's going on in there. Even getting one of those cheaper v-mounts Sevi linked to, and the red XLR-to-lemo would be ~$500 (with crappy no-name battery) and should be able to go direct to 6" lemo for mounting on sticks...

Or... you do as me.
Cut of your AC power supply cable and buy a set of female / male 4 pin XLR connectors. (cost a few bucks.) and put them on the cable to the AC.
Then you have a lemo to 4 pin XLR power cable for your camera. That is with you every time you bring your power supply. Also this allow you to extend your power cable so you do not only need to shoot in your kitchen. You can now reach out in the living room ass well. :) no joke but it's kind of nice to have the AC power by the video bay in the studio and then 4pin XLR extend the power cable up to the camera along with BNR cable and such and then do not have to have the AC by the dolly etc.

Then when you have done the above you can also do the following. at own risk... buy RC batteries, same as you use for your droid and another female 4pin xlr and lipo connector. Those copter batteries come with a lot of power in 14.5 V which suits the cameras well.

All you need to power your epic with both wall socket power and lithium batteries are to find here for less than 350USD:
