  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Using Impero and Birger

Same story. . . I have NEVER been able to get ANY idata. I would like to know if Build 30 works perfectly with the Birger.

Thanks.

Stephen

I had i-data in both build 21.3.2 (beta) and build 30 (beta), but I'm just re-installing release build v21.4.1 because there's things I can do in RedCine (such as adjust timecodes) that I can't do in Redcine-X yet.
Make sure all the appropriate boxes for i-data are ticked, remember after an upgrade they switch back to default "off".
good luck

edit. Build 21.4.1 re-installed.
Enabled: System - Setup - Preference - Display - lens-data (check box) and select feet/meters
Enabled: System - setup - Remote - lens-port (check box) and Remote Port select S4/i

I-data works, Calibrate lens and Impero works either cabled or wireless.
All good!

No problems with build 30. Exported the custom settings, and with the latest build Idata appeared without any effort from my side. l always connect the Berger cable before turning the camera on.

Let me rephrase the question. Has anyone got idata on B30 who didn't have on B21.

I've checked all the boxes. If the build isn't the issue it's hardware.

damn

damn

so, shouldn't have commented... :cryin:

Friday after rolling back to build 24, Impero was all good.

Fired up the system for a shoot on Monday morning, and all I get from the Impero is a little light under the record button (C/M light) and no other response..
nothing in the guide about this...

Anyone know if this is a unit fault showing up, or what else it might mean???
Fresh batteries tried, of course!

all fixed

all fixed

update.
Thanks to Erik's advice, Impero is working again.
I'd forgotten that little yellow light indicates the Impero is in bootloader mode (waiting for a software install) and so re-flashing it with the Impero software through the Macbook/Birger-mount fixed the problem. phew....

Okay guys, try not to crucify me here, but where and how does one go about updating one's Birger/Impero software? I have never done this since I've owned the system, and I wonder if it is something I should be doing on a regular basis.

Except for the fact that I have never been able to get idata, it has worked perfectly.

So. . . again. . . where do I go to download the new software for the mount and the Impero. . . and how do I go about doing so? SHOULD I do so???

Thanks.

Stephen

Stephen, I think updating your Birger and Impero is a good idea, it will probably get iData working, and adds some very handy features to the Impero.

First of all, are you on a Mac with Bluetooth or at least have access to one? It's much easier than updating with a PC.

All downloads are at http://birger.us/downloads.htm

You can update using the BEI Device Interface software:
BEI Device Interface Mac OS X 1.1.10 (Universal 32/64-bit Binary)

You'll want to download the newest updates, for the Birger mount:
Canon EF-232 Library 20d (make sure you save the file not view it, and that it has the extension .bei)
And Impero:
Impero Controller v2.1 (make sure you save the file not view it, and that it has the extension .ebin)

Some update instructions and notes on the new functions are in "Quick Notes for Versions 1.4 and Above (pdf)" but ignore the Manual-Update instructions, that is only for PC.

It's been a while since I've done it and I don't have Mac handy, but here's the basic overview:
1) Power the Impero from the camera
2) Make a Bluetooth connection from your computer to the mount (if it needs a password, it is the serial number printed on your mount)
3) Start the BEI Device interface software, and connect to the mount
4) Do a firmware update (it may be a button that just says "update," I can't recall) and select the firmware lens library file for the mount
5) Then update the Impero. In case it is running firmware version 1.5 or older, you will need to power it on into bootloader mode: with the Impero turned off, hold down the Auto 1 and Auto 2 buttons while connecting the Lemo-to-Lemo cable to the middle port of the mount and then Impero. If you are successful the Impero will have the bottom LED on the REC button lit, and nothing else.
6) Do a firmware update and select the firmware for the Impero, the same as you did for the mount. Don't worry, the software knows which unit the firmware is for and automatically updates the correct one.

If I've got anything wrong, somebody jump in and correct me!

Great. . . thanks so much, Stephen. . . I can't wait to try this out!

Stephen

I may try Build 30 soon.

I want to check in with you guys about connecting Impero to Birger via wired connection. Does it matter which port I plug into on the Birger? I haven't done this in awhile and forget if it matters or not?

Thanks!

It's the middle one.

Been working great with Build 30 for me.

I STILL can't get idata. . .

I STILL can't get idata. . .

:-(

Anyone want to tell me exactly why I can't get idata from my Birger onto my screen?

I'm in Build 30, and my RED just came back with the M-X upgrade, which included a new idata board. Still nothing.

What am I possibly doing wrong? I just can't get that data!

Stephen

Okay, weirder still.

I just went through my complete compendium of EF lenses. I get lens data for the 16-35 Canon L-Series f2.8 zoom and the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 zoom, but for exactly none other lenses! That means, I'm not getting lens data from:

Canon L-Series 24mm
Canon L-Series 35mm
Canon L-Series 50mm
Canon L-Series 85mm
Canon L-Series 100mm Macro
Canon L-Series 135mm
Canon L-Series 200mm

What on earth could be going on here? Why would I get data every time with the two zooms, but never on the other lenses?

Stephen

very strange.. same config as you (build 30 and latest impero/birger firmware) and get the lens data on and off but working on any primes or zoom:
here are those that recoup yours:

L 16-35mm
L 50mm
L 85mm
L 24mm
L 35mm
100mm macro

have you tried with another set of canon primes, or same primes on other mount?

Unfortunately, I have no more primes and we're the only Birger in the state.

You need to update the library in the lens mount to 20d to match the change Red made in the lens data format in 21 (which is the same as 30).

First page of this thread is current. Will help sort most problems.

Is there an operational manual for the mount itself? I want to show someone about the mount and send them the manual but I can't seem to find one on the website.

Also, is their a finalized installation instructions for the mount? I received what looks like a photocopy of instructions that said "preliminary" across each page.
