  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Update......

This is something we who paid for the upgraded to MG Weapon at NAB believed to be true (at least I don't believe we were all hallucinating). I knew it would make fiscal sense to pay for the MG upgrades even though we didn't know exactly what we would be getting...however, it was understood there would be a path to 8K.

You do have a path... the MG path to 8K is to go from MG to Carbon then to 8k but like I already said in this thread, it is going to be the much more expensive path than going carbon right now. There never can be a sensor only 8k upgrade from MG because the boards just are not fast enough.

Hi Jarred!

Can you let us know what mounts will be available and when (RTL=RED Time Line) for the 8K sensor? Also, what they will offer, aside from a wider port.

Thank you very much

Fury

Thanks dude. We are seriously exploring the carbon path for both our Dragons.

All 3 OLPFS are complete for the 8k and there is also the 8K PL mount that works awesome with the full frame PL mounted glass out there from Zeiss and the Xenons etc. Panavision has made their own mount for 8K weapon that you get through them for using their 70mm lenses. Canon mounts cover full frame already but we might make tweak those a bit to help with the medium format to EOS adapters, So far from the people that have tested 8K the feedback is that their favorite glass that the customers have tested on 8K weapon are Medium format lenses rehoused or with canon adapters. Nikon is on the list, and there are some new mounts from various companies coming down the pike.

I think there is room for a new standard lens mount that covers everything and gives you the best of all worlds, but I think that needs to happen at the lens companies first, and we will be happy to follow.

Hi Jarred!,

Thank you! I have put together a Mamiya set, with a Mammy to PL adapter. Is there any advantage to a Mammy to Canon adapter, over my setup?

Are we able to order the OLPF's soon and do they have any different characteristics ve. those for the current Weapon (Stealth)?

Oh, are we returning to RED our Standard OLPF, for an 8K Standard OLPF, at the time of 8K upgrade (for those of us who prepaid within seconds of opening orders at NAB, at least)?

Thank you very much

Always enjoying when you're in front of your crystal ball and talking out loud.

any chance to see 3rd party PL mounts from various companies? (with electronic support lds,/i,lbus connector) OffHollywood,ET etc.
Would love to see RED FOCUS MODULE, intregrated one :) so we can stack up 3 motors and power them from PL mount.

I'm not Jarred and can't answer some of that, but I have A LOT of experience with Mamiya 645 to Canon EF and PL Adapters. The short answer is it truly depends on your adapter and your tolerance for weirdness that can occur. I have 7 Mamiya-645>Canon-EF adapters here. Two of which I'm "okay with". I have 3 Mamiya 645>PL adapters here, non of which I'm "in love with". My solution was to work with Duclos Lenses and they kindly obliged by creating a "Mamiya 645 PL Mount Conversion" which uses their Multi-Mount system. Which is good just in case there's a bigger sensor in the distant future that requires a bigger mouth. Weapon 8K will likely be the largest format I'll be using "regularly" for the next 2-3 years (maybe much longer even) and I'm pretty damn happy with this solution for day to day shooting.

I plan on using those, my FF35/VV PL glass, a host of EF lenses, and the lenses I've adapted to EF on 8K Weapon.

The 8K OLPFs are different in the sense that they are made of a bigger OLPF window. That's the only different characteristic I am aware of. It uses the same auto detection scheme that Weapon 6K uses.

Things we don't know are:

- When 8K OLPFs will be up for order.
- When the 8K PL Mounts will be up for sale.
- If there is any upgrade/trade-in program for 8K PL Mounts from 6K PL Mounts.
- If there is a modification to the DSMC Canon EF Mount how that will work.
- What the secret of life is.

Some of those answers will likely come sooner than others :)

Hi Phil!

Luv to Matthew!

Some of us know those answers or the antithetical ones-or some of them- but if we told you...

Thank you very much

ceico7 on ebay is making some hasselblad positive lock to ef stainless adapters, coming in about 2 months, he has ones to pl already on ebay and they are top notch.

Quick clarification, would the $3K to $5K savings be for upgrades only? Or would that apply to new Red customers getting into the ecosystem as well?

As I mentioned, I have a Raven on order but for a possible $5K off Weapon MG, I would seriously consider the price jump if that's for new customers as well.

Applied to new cameras as well, the savings are not tied at all to upgrades, it affects all camera bodies.

It all depends on what adapter you are using. Price is a good indicator. Ciecio makes a pretty decent Mamiya to Canon adapter for about $700 that is pretty solid and a few other companies that do a good job. I would avoid the cheapo $100 ebay adapters for pretty much anything.

When you send your camera back, whatever OLPF you return your camera with for upgrade we will swap out with the same in the 8K version.

As to reinforce what Jarred said,

Having purchased and literally town away 9 adapters, if you pay less then $500 don't expect anything much from it...

Sadly for Canon users, I have seen a worst ratio then PL, been that almost 90% of Mamiya to Canon adopters are really crap...

Mama to PL on the other hand are a bit more solid...

The one I have found to be good enough for now, with it been very thin, and with a Locking mechanism is the UK made for Les as seen in the pic below... But Once I leave Mauritius, likely next year, I will have my full Mamiya set PL swapped by Duclos, just waiting to see final specs on the Weapon VV 8K specs to proceed.

I'll also share few shots for the Dragon 6k from Mauritius, this glass is still an insanely great glass... And so is the Hassy by Fuji... :)

Gotta love Duclos. Those guys are so rad.

And it scares the shit out of everyone.

I loved that comment. We use table routers (25,000 RPM) to put rounded edges on fairly small flat plastic pieces where your fingers are very close to the bit - works well but "scares the shit out of everyone" that does it. :-)
