  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Update......

I think this news on magnesium is great, but for my B camera which was bought this year it still doesn't make financial cents (I already am in for a 8k Weapon on my A camera). My B camera is almost always in 6/5 frame anamorphic at 24fps, 180 shutter at 5:1 redcode. This is probably wimpier then most redusers need, but I'm hoping there will be a upgrade option somewhere between raven and magnesium. In my perfect world, on the RED.COM web site there would just be a base weapon frame then I would pick a CPU board based on my film spec.

Like ordering a Dell computer... interesting idea.

Jackpot! thanks. Maik! Definitely way smaller than ursa mini. Did you preorder in Germany RED? or US?
Yes, it looks great. Can't wait to hold it in my hands. I ordered through RED Germany, which i highly suggest if you are from Germany or EU. Best service i have ever experienced.

O back to the Magnesium upgrades for a second... I have a question for all of you in that upgrade line. I have a proposal for you guys straight from our manufacturing team. We can shave a few grand (3k-5k) off the price if we switch some of the internals to aluminum instead of magnesium.. The outside pieces will still be made out of magnesium so you will still inherit the weight savings but some of the internals we have an opportunity to gain a lot of efficiency in manufacturing and save you some cash.. Magnesium is stupidly cheap to cast but incredibly expensive to machine and it’s just not getting any cheaper or easier even with the increased volumes or the more that time goes by. I thought I would give you all a vote.

Saving some money with a slight weight gain is fine with me.

Thank you for putting it out to the community to give input on this.

Mr. Jarred. Since you are testing out the Raven, can we get a picture of the red raven in your hands? I just want to see the size of it. Its hard to tell by just looking at the product pics. I am just curious because some cameras look small in pictures but are actually big in real life.

ha ha my hands are probably twice the size of normal people so that wouldn't be good but here is a size reference I just took just for you :)

nice cross branding :)
so what is that on the front, a lens, a mount adapter? been trying to figure that out, thanks jarred! hope your weekend is going great!
oh and will there be caps to protects those exposed ports if you arent using them?

Heh. That's a nice way to show the new Universal Top Handle :)

Are there 1/4-20s tapped up there?

Wow. Seriously that was fast. Thank you very much good sir. You really cannot beat that size. No way. Thank you again.

I might switch over. I just dont know how long the line is for Germany. LOL. Red is just crazy good at their customer service period.

That is a 24mm lens, just a personal thing that I made for myself (and now some of my friends) . just because.

Jae, our fulfillment is regional agnostic. We are fulfilling in order of time/date stamp globally.

I think the reason people are confused is because it's hard to understand why is the Mg being equipped with slower boards.
No offence meant, I just haven't seen the answer that would satisfy people who keep asking this, including myself.

There are a lot of people who would like to have the performance of the Carbon but don't need the carbon body.
If Mg/Alu Weapon with the same boards as Carbon fell somewhere in between price wise, I would make the leap.

What is the production cost difference between Mg and Carbon bodies? This would be great to know in order to understand this better.

I think we need an inbetweener camera that would have Mg/Alu body with performance of the Carbon, without the costly bling.

Thanks Jarred.

What a beauty! Yep the size can't be beaten. Thank you Jarred.

P.S.: Would love to learn more about this lens... ;)

Thanks Jarred.

Carbon has 8K boards in them, more memory, faster ASICS etc. Think the difference between a 4 core Intel i7 and a Xeon 15 core. they look the same smell the same and feel the same but one is way faster, and way harder to make. ( and in turn, more expensive ) Just like our sensors, out of X amount of asics that we make only a small fraction of them end up being capable of that highest performance. The internals are the bulk of the price difference between the carbon and whatever metal is used in the body.

that's a lens? wow, what kind of glass?
i cant begin to comprehend whats going on there, haha!

Rehoused STM 24mm 2.8 Canon. Good little lens optically, stupidly cheap and small and light and has pretty good little lens motors in it made for video. I made it for my Gimbal (hand and air ) because I hated how the manual focus ring would sometimes turn during flight and ruin the shot and taping it down seemed so ghetto and I hated how how if you looked at these plastic lenses wrong they would break. So I took it apart, remachined all the externals out of millspec aluminum and titanium, took the manual focus ring off, left the STM motors for iris and focus in there, and I do everything through the built in wireless control on the Raven via Foolcontrol (or via the rotator dial on the sidekick) Funny thing is that it turned out so awesome Im using it even for tripod work.

would you guys consider putting better boards in a MG/Aluminum body simply as a way to make people stop requesting it on RU? lol... but seriously if it saved a significant amount id be happy for one as well...but I'm guessing the costs aren't there to justify the complexity i just know its common question and i think its cuz last time around CF dragon had same functionality as non CF dragon so people are just confused/not sure how much the costs are being eaten up by the material. to be humbly honest percentage wise of costs its a huge leap to go from the prices we were used to paying to CF 8k, and it makes total sense cuz of yield rates. i think people who want to be top tier camera (myself included) are just taken back by the costs this time around, and it makes sense its just harder on some of us than others i suppose...

my one major request is to please keep the lines open as long as you can for those of us who are waiting for the upgrade but unsure of when we need to be liquid. if you can let the upgrade lines run a long time like you did for dragon that does majorly help guys like me who are stuck dealing with different release cycles from different brands and whatnot, personal issues, whatever it is. the more time the better as far as I'm concerned cuz I'm locked in and awaiting the CF email but worried about if it comes and i take too long to get liquid i end up off the red ship so to speak if i miss out on the unannounced window. i know there will be an end to the deal, I'm just hoping for some longevity cuz my banks are total pricks man like they give me zero interest loans and screw my credit when i take the deals vs locking in financing elsewhere but not at zero. I'm starting to think the latter is the better approach
