  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Update......

What alloy and machining process are you guys using? I always have found and heard that the machining qualities of Magnesium alloys is the best of any common metal, and in many applications, the savings in machining costs more than compensate for the increased cost of the material over straight Aluminum. As long as you irrigate the machining process (to prevent overheating) it should be easier to work with than Aluminum since the chips break off (rather than coil up into nasty springs like Aluminum does) and you can thread it without it being gummy (which breaks taps). Kind of like machining Brass but even easier.

Here's the Wiki on Mg . . . scroll down to the "Machining" section:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnesium_alloy

If your cutting in big things like car rims then big chunks flying around is fine and not a problem. When you make super complex very small pieces with incredibly small tolerances that creates alot of very small chips and dust, it is a problem. you need to run the machines very slow. The bits need to be replaced/sharpened continuously as a dull bit on mg acts like a match. . Irrigation doesn't actually help... magnesium can ignite even at the bottom of a coolant pool. But the stuff actually floats sometimes so it compounds the issue. And you can't mix machines in a manufacturing line that needs to make a bunch of other pieces efficiently as every time you switch between metals you need to do a complete cleaning. And you need to supervise the machines like a toddler near a campfire which sucks even more because it takes so long.

And it scares the shit out of everyone.

Don't get me wrong.. we love Magnesium. It is just a cost monster :)

your wiki says it right in your link. " but usually the manufacturing operations make magnesium more expensive "

Will Germany/Europe have similar release dates or will they get it later?

Ordered 1st day at Nab the CF upgrade with 8K update. They said will be available at the end of year.
I guess Mg is a little bit later over here?

..

And so do I... So much... Reason why I am willing to pay for the 8K MG... When time comes, if possible... ;)

Or I think an other solution will be to buy two Weapons, a Magnesium 6k and a CF or Forged 8k, then swap the external pieces ha ha.

Oh, and got few Magnesium toys coming next year too... Which will show my love for this very BAD ass material!!

After purchasing a Scarlet D last November, jumping on the upgrade to Epic D after NAB I was thinking that maybe EOL for me in upgrades due to cost. If the MG weapon comes down by 5k I can now see myself making the jump in the not too distant future. This is awesome.

Couldn't agree more !

8K will be available at the end of year or your CF upgrade in 6K? I ordered a CF Weapon at the beginning of May (new order, not upgrade), afraid of having the camera in 2016...

A little late... Thanks Jarred for the update. Awesome move with MG Weapon. I see so many ways how other companies would have handled such an opportunity and then comes this, price-reduction, having a choice, discussing it. Yep, RED is different, in the most positive way.

This reduction will bring me much closer to a Weapon, not that i can pull the trigger right now, but i already can appreciate it a lot. :) Thanks!

Glad to hear 8k will be happening this year, i can't wait to see this in action and footage... Dream-camera!

Hmmm, are those AL-internals a little sign for what's to come for Scarlet-Owners? ;)

Thank you for the response. I will keep my preorder in the United States then. I appreciate it.

just 6K :( but will be happy to have it then. Because of tax I really hope I can spend the money this year on weapon 😁

Mr. Jarred. Since you are testing out the Raven, can we get a picture of the red raven in your hands? I just want to see the size of it. Its hard to tell by just looking at the product pics. I am just curious because some cameras look small in pictures but are actually big in real life.

+1! I did not order the Mag Weapon yet. A bit to expensive for me. A few grand off the price would be a game-changer for me. As long as the current upgrade package is the same!

Thanks for the updating...

Ditto, the Mg pricing kept me from going for the upgrade. This might change for me if you can get the cost down. I'm ok with the current weight of my Epic Dragon, so anything under that is a win for me.

When do you think we would know final pricing on the Mg upgrade packages?

I just paid the deposit for the magnesium upgrade- thanks Jarred !!
