A very sad news and another reminder about the risks of underwater cinematography.

Hi Jim,

Was just with Wes on Friday and Sat. here in Key Largo. He was coming over to the house this week.

He was on CCR on the dive. Haven't heard all the details yet.

Take care,
Frazier

Oh man...in the upcoming Nat Geo issue there's a pull out, tear off big page with one of Wes' photos, only the second time in its history the magazine has done that. He'll never get to see it. Equipment malfunction would be my guess. Rest in peace Wes, you were a great artist and an outstanding person.

Does anyone know if the Liquid Pictures underwater beam splitter rig has major problems with reflections and how do they overcome these problems? Is the reflection problems mainly when this kind of rig is used in an underwater studio situation with light sources illuminating subjects and sets or is reflections a general problem which can be over come by the use of french flags etc????

Ross:

I know one of DJs' partners so I will ask but I think they, like most 3D people, tend to be a bit proprietary with that kind of info.

BTW Panasonic just announced a new 3d 3 chip consumer/prosumer camcorder that uses a split image lens for side by side 960 x 1080. Since the lens is removable for normal usage and the camcorder is one of the best compact consumer ones out there we will make a housing for it the comes with standard dome port for normal use and an extended port for 3d use.

Hi Frasier, glad to see your Aquavideo is optimum now..super..as far as Wes Skiles..all I have heard through the dive sites is this.Wes was on a Optima with no bailout systems..he had a massive heart attack..thats it..shallow open ocean off Florida after 103 minute bottom time.Kozzzzzzzzzzz

Frazier shot with the new sigma 8-16 zoom on the Red/Birger last week and we'll post some samples in the next couple of days. Very impressive! Close to Arri 8r quality for $699 and you can shift focal length up to 16mm if desired - which you can't do with the 8r. Full focus and iris control with the Birger. (also available in nikon mount)

Some people think it is a little slow at f4.5 but even with m sensor at 320 he was shooting at f11 (30 feet-no u/w filter). Might need to go to 5.6 with a filter at deeper depths but with the mx sensor shouldn't be much of an issue.

In other news, while waiting for my Epic we have also been making some 7d housings. My friend George schellenger has some very nice whale shark footage he shot last month that I thought the bubble blowers might like to see.

Check out his www.sharktaskforce.com website - it's the first couple of videos on the homepage right now.

If anyone is interested, I have a Gates Deep Red housing for sale. Its nearly brand new, only been in the pool on 3 shoots, but a great chance to save some $$$. Also available for rental.

Good Day to all,

We just completed a custom modification of DEEP RED to support the Birger mount. Very straightforward -- one new control that presses the buttons on the left side of the mount to open/close the iris. Focus/Zoom remains operable by the original geared system.

So if you have a Birger mount you are now supported with DEEP RED. Contact Gates for further details.

Mike,

What's the pricing on it, I don't see any discounts posted on your website. also, what port or ports come with it?

Are u guys at GATES making a new housing for the Canon 305 4.2.2 50mb camera in 2011...this would also be a nice addition to the industrial underwater world..

Hi Jim,

Yes. The project is underway. For those unaware of the specs the XF305 is quite a leap forward in capability for a 1/3" sensor camera. I'm informed that independent testing will soon reveal remarkable sharpness and dynamic range. BBC has already approved it, other broadcasters to follow.

The housing will be provisioned for nanoFlash if you want higher data rates. Working on a Super Wide, too.

That custom modification is for the company that I work for, and we are eagerly looking forward to receiving the housing, trying it out, and reporting back here if anyone is interested.

...and I'll be waiting for it so that all those EX-1 owners jumping ship to the Canon will sell their EX-1 housings and their gorgeous Fathom ports cheaply :-)

Jim:

While probably not quite as fancy as the Gates, but with basically the same functionality, we have made housings for virtually all of the Canon industrial/3 chip cameras - XL1, XL2, GL1, GL2, XHA1, etc. and since the 305 is physically very similar to the XHA1, I don't see much difficulty in doing our normal custom fitted housings for it. Pricing is typically $2300-$2900 - I can be more precise when I see one up close. This would be with a dome port and using either the Canon .8 wide converter or a similar one from Canon. Acrylic dome is standard - our glass dome would be available as well.

The main interest of these cameras over previous models is the 4:2:2 50Mbps recording which is acceptable to the BBC and others for regular use (HDV and H.264 are generally limited to short portions of the program.)

BTW regarding Birger - we did controls for operating the buttons on the Birger back in 2008, but it is a bit of a hassle pushing those small buttons compared to operating the Birger directly through a computer - or better, our small computer circuit board inside the housing and with standard focus-near/focus-far and iris-up/iris-down type switch control - similar to what you would have on a LANC-type camera. It allows you to do focus, which brings out one of the big advantages of Birger in that you can instantly change from a 10-22 to a 16-35 or Sigma 18-50, to a 100mm macro, to a fisheye, etc. etc. without worrying about adjusting gears or anything else.

Birger quite simply provides the most powerful solution for RED U/W and probably gives the greatest bang for the buck in professional underwater motion imaging that has ever existed with the availability of lenses like the 8-16 Sigma, 10-22 and 14mm Canons. The only reason not to use Birger is the current trade in policy - but once that situation is over I believe that used RED1s be will readily available for about the same cost as these prosumer cameras and RED/Birger will make it both easier and much, much higher quality.

And 64 gig CF cards will eliminate the need for the drive allowing the housing to be even shorter, so not much larger than the housings for the Canon, HVX200, Sony Z1, etc.

Of course, Epic will be even nicer, but it will be hard to beat an R1 for bang for the buck.

Thanks for the replys..my fellow shooter Dan MAURO from our parent show SPOPRTDIVER TV wants to buy the Canon 305 shortly..I will advise him of your housing price Mike..ALSO this new 3D PIRANHA movie just coming out..what 3d underwater camera.lense and housing did they use..anyone no...we are shooting a National Geographic show in Lake Huron and Superior over the next 3 weeks with the GATES EX1R camera, fathom super lense and this NANO flash..will be interesting ..a UK production called Drain The Lakes..Kozzzzzz
