  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

UI & UX ideas

There's some lovely work here.

However from a UX view i suspect we're missing a few things.

IMHO there's just too much being displayed that i simply don't care about when shooting. When i am shooting i am looking at my talent, action, blocking, moves and so on.

I do not care about:

- whitebalance or anything that is not baked into the RAW
- detailed histograms or anything better displayed in post
- I do not change iso in the middle of a shot, or shutter speed.
- Most lenses are manual with no f stop being displayed
- I know what camera this is, i don't need Cam A or anything like that
- It's a RAW camera, i do not need LUT selections

What i do care about

- over/under exposure, traffic lights. Broad exposure points. I'm not scrutinising a histogram but glancing at indicators.
- focus. magnification. edges. ANYTHING that can help with that is a winner. I know we're talking an external monitor but if there is any chance we can shoot without on occasion that is a massive plus point for portability. One of the single most frustrating aspects of shooting red is the speed of magnification of the image. You just can't do it during shooting. I would trade all the UI chrome in the world for responsive quick touch based zoom of an area live during a shoot.
- sound bars, useful. that needs monitoring

But settings and things like that can just be a separate page. I think we should all look at how we shoot and ask to prioritise what tools we use when we shoot - I'm sure everyone is different but this is a RAW camera. I need the tools that confirm i've got a good 'negative'

So i posted on the other thread the idea of a constantly magnified area, where touching the main image would update the magnified section. IMHO this would be super useful to me.

Do we even know if swiping and so on is possible off this screen? And can we not use the physical buttons as well?

Cheers
Paul

Hey Paul. Very much agree with almost everything above, and love the magnify idea you proposed. Also agree that everything non-critical should be removed. That said, it's important that things are not too hidden. For example, I don't need a big LUT button, but something small that notifies me that a lut is applied may be useful, even if I have to go through the main menu to change it. WB i think needs to be both visible an easily changeable. Same for ISO and shutter speed. Regarding manual lenses, I think on the Komodo at least, most people will be using electronic lenses. Totally agree re. "Cam A". But I usually only have a single camera. For multi-cam shoots, maybe it will be useful?

Personally, I like a large histogram, and have almost no use for LUTS or sound bars. I would love the histogram to also display the raw exposure. I've tried to indicate this in my mockups, not sure it is clear enough, or that it will not create confusion for some.

I definitely need focus assist tools. The current focus peaking overlay (is that what it is called?) is a life-saver. Would be great if they can be easily toggled on and off.

Maybe I should have posted this in the Komodo thread, but since it is UI related....

Jarred mentioned a few little Easter eggs in his Easter post, do you remember? (not just the simplified compression setting)

I know Easter is long over, but has anyone else noticed that the settings (cogwheel/gear) and service (tool/hex wrench) symbols disappeared (compared to older UI pics; maybe moved to the RED> menu bar?),
and two new symbols have been put in the top row:
A padlock displaying if the touch screen fuction has been locked/unlocked by pressing up+down simultaneously,
and a green lit, checked off Komodo (side view) - any idea what this means?
Malfuction monitoring?
Temperature/calibration/black shading monitoring?
Master/slave operation/connection display for multicam arrays?
Displaying smartphone control/connection/monitoring? Any idea? Anyone? Bueller? ...Jarred?

By the way, you guys did a great job designing practical UI's. The agony of choice, huh?
Thanks for sharing!

One idea...
(And it might have already been mentioned)

There should be a way to hide the live view from the UI and just focus on settings/histograms. Most komodo users will be using external displays, and the live view on top is really superfluous in that case. It might be nice to have an option to hide the live view so that more space can be reserved for the settings and read outs.

The UI is easily becoming cluttered with lot's of colourful information and buttons.
I would very much like to be able to switch between different layouts for different situations. Let's say there is no external monitor used, then I would like a layout created to be able to concentrate on the image, and not to be distracted by strong colours. On the other hand when using an external monitor I maybe don't need an image on the camera body. A good idea would be to be able to change brightness and amount of colour in the information and buttons, without affecting the image. Another thought is to be able to switch off information that you don't feel a need for so that the screen may become less cluttered. And as someone already pointed out, an ability to change direction, turning the image 90 degrees would be handy.

Absolutely. I would hope that when a monitor is attached, the live view on the top screen will disappear. This leaves a lot of space for adjusting settings. Maybe the top screen can then become similar to foolcontrol (I have always liked that interface). Also love the idea of splitting the 1:1 focus between the attached monitor and the built-in one, but this would have to be an optional setting, because the top monitor will not always be visible to the operator.

I think theres a delicate balance between customisability and consistency. For example, it would be great to be able to remove elements that I don't often use, like audio bars, but at the same time too much customisation may cause the interface to be confusing for some.

Reviving this thread because I get an internal server error when I try start a new thread.

Just got my Komodo a couple days ago. Have not done any proper tests but loving it so far. So small and light!

One thing I'm already missing a bit from DSMC2 is assignable buttons. I ride my aperture quite a lot and it's a bit slow to do this on the top screen. It would be great if there was a "hide sliding ruler thing" mode where we could highlight, for example, aperture from the bottom menu, then use the up/down buttons to adjust it without having the rest of the interface hidden by the ruler. Alternately some way to assign the buttons. For example, a long press of the menu button could change the buttons from their default behaviour to an assigned behaviour.

On the hardware side, I've only seen (non-wifi) accessories with start/stop buttons. Do any have assignable buttons?

Thanks,
Rob

Happy to see the direction of the Raptor UI resembles what we were doing in the thread :smash:
