Two new pro sound recorders announced: Zaxcom Nova ($5K)& Sound Devices Scorpio ($9K)

I use a MixPre-3. I could use that TC output in the MixPre-3 II... Hmmm

Sound Devices Mix Pre Series 2 Pre Discussion

By Video Mantis

On today's Vault Talk, we go over the newly announced Sound Devices Mix Pre Series 2 Recorders. They are not available for demo or purchase yet, but the statistics have been released, and Matt Brodnick and I are here to go over all the features and 32bit floating myths that are out there!

Whelp, didn't buy the MixPre 6 II, but did buy the MixPre 10 II earlier today.

Quick thoughts, works exactly like the 10 from before with the added benefits of floating 32-bit depth recording, which is why I'm interested in it. Early thoughts, very impressed with what that adds into the equation in terms of a massive record-able range. For "us", here it is feeding timecode to RED Monstro 8K VV.

I got grips about the 3, 6, and why I went with the 10 (touch on that in the Instagram post); but overall with what it does as it's core job, pretty damn impressed.

Thanks for the detailed info Phil, good to have the hands-on confirmation that the timecode and 32-bit recording implementation are up to the usual SoundDevices standards. Good to have those connection/card-slot gripes mentioned too, for people to factor in when deciding which model they might want to go with.

A bit more expensive... but with TC, 32bit, 132db dynamic range and the best preamp out there is the Sonosax SX-R4+ (if you are outside the US due to abusive patent regulations ;-)) .

PS: Dynamic range isn't equal to sound fidelity. How the sircuitry are made from powering to output makes the difference in sound fidelity.

New Mix Pre series II just announced with some goodies like timecode and 32 bit floating audio (infinite). https://www.sounddevices.com/mixpre/

In my opinion in the low low budget arena then the Zoom F Series clearly had the lead when it comes to be best purchase for a field recorder for any aspiring PSM.

But lately Sound Devices has been fighting back hard, especially with these new 2nd Generation recorders then they've almost closed the gap with the Zoom F Series that they used to be lagging behind with. I'd still give the edge to Zoom F series to recommend buying, but it is a very close call now!

Ordered one of the new units, landing here after the holiday weekend, likely Wednesday. Will be testing all the timecode related jazz. Might pick up a new wireless sync kit too.

Do you ever still use your Zaxcom Maxx?

Now 32bit float will kill the mixer job...

You are very very sadly mistaken if you think that, are you're waaaaaay undervaluing and misunderstanding the Mixer's job.

We do so so so much more than just set the gain right.

This is like saying "all a 1st AC does is make an image sharp"

Well no, they do waaaaaaaaaay more than that! And no matter how good AF gets, there will still be an important role for a 1st AC on a film set.

It's like having an 8k sensor and some Nikon AI Glass in front of it. (is it even comparable?).

That might be a bit silly with 8K, but a 4K camera + Nikon AI glass is a sweet combo for some!

I use a MixPre-3. I could use that TC output in the MixPre-3 II... Hmmm

That is an easy work around? Just use two timecode boxes with the MixPre3 Gen 1 (jammed to each other, one attached, one detached).

A friend has the only Sonosax SX-R4+ in the country, and he loves how it sounds, he reckons it sounds way better than Sound Devices.

And certainly from a features perspective, it seems to pack more into a very small form factor than anything else on the market! (at least until the Zaxcom Nova starts shipping? Which is also a very compact field recorder)

I've been tempted by it, but Sonosax is quite pricey. Got a Zoom F8n instead, and now a Zaxcom Maxx

In my eyes the best thing about the MixPre10 Gen2 is the BIG PRICE DROP it got! Does make it price competitive again against the competition.

You are right David I understand the job of a good mixer. But I’m afraid that this tech will push the trend to fill even more tracks for the post without adjusting (mixing and even listening to) them on the shoot. I've had as teacher some great mixers like Antoine Bonfanti and Luc Yersin.
