So I had a saltwater attack of sorts with my weapon VV camera. I had a leak in a Ewa Marine splash bag and got a couple of inches of water in the bottom. It appears most of the contact came when we tipped the camera and bag upward and the batteries and batts plate contacted the water. It doesn’t appear the camera body made any or very little contact with the water itself. However, it’s not working, something has obviously shorted out. The media, monitor, lens all survived, there’s no trace that the port of the camera ever got near the water, if fact the whole camera seems dry and had no signs of any corrosion. I sent it in for repair and was told that repairs would cost more than a brand new camera ($54,500) and it’s a total loss. I am having a hard time believing that the camera body has no value at all and is a total loss. Certainly the sensor has value, what about the body, media bay, port, etc. I can believe that some or even all the boards “fried” through some sort of effect of the batteries and battery plate getting wet. It’s hard to swallow the idea that new boards would cost more than $55K, or that they couldn’t be fixed. I totally understand that Red doesn’t want to repair a camera that my have other unknown issues from the water, there is no way they can insure I’ll have a solid product unless they call it a total loss and get me a new one. My thought are this, #1 is there anyone else on this planet that can repair it? I know I won’t get a guarantee from anyone but I might get a working camera. #2 can I pull my monstro sensor out and put it in my Weapon Helium or can I put my Weapon Helium boards in my Monstro? #3 Can I get any value for this camera to offset the price of purchasing a new one? I’d like to hear your thoughts and suggestions.
