  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Traveling with Epic

I usually fly Delta, I've never had a problem with the weight of my carry on, they are only concerned with size.

been away from the forum for a few days... I think you have been lucky in the past if you have not had your carry on weighed.. I have had mine weighed most times in the last 4 years or so... and it presents a real dilemma if they get picky about it. I once had a security person simply refuse to let me hand carry a camera (not a Red) because it was 2cm too long. And they would not listen to reason. We ended up partly dismantling the camera to get it through. But we had to check in one of our intended hand carry bags because they refused to allow us the additional bag that had to be created...I hope you get through OK and good luck with the filming....

We will be in Italy most of October, leaving from LA on Alitalia. I wanted something to carry my Scarlet-w-a couple of zooms on the flight (without totally breaking down the camera ... other than removing the lens). Today I picked up a Lowepro Magnum 400 AW camera bag and it seems to do the trick. The dimensions, except for one side, which is about a 1/2 inch off, meet the airline's published carry-on size limits; I can stand the Scarlet up in the bag with the RED and WC side side handles and the WC top handle attached; there is still plenty of room for 2 Nikon zooms and several RedVolts; and it will function as a run-n-gun bag when the lenses are attached. Now, I just have to check the weight with it filled. Luckily, our checked baggage allowance is 2 bags per person, so the rest of the RedVolts, chargers, etc. can be packed and checked through.

I am not sure when Delta would do it, I've only had it X-ray'd I'm not even sure there is a scale at security, and they never look at it at the counter when checking in. I fly out of SLC, I've never had carry on luggage weighed. Once I leave home it's with me and through security, and is no longer an issue, until I have to return.

I can second that unfortunately, total pain in the neck, happens flying out of Australia a lot. you should be prepared for the eventuality that your gear might end up in the cargo hold, so even an on board backpack should be sturdy.

Petrol makes the largest backpack that you can buy. I can fit the Epic with 6 V-mount batts, 14-24 Zoom, 28-70 Zoom, 80-200 zoom, 85 prime, Oconnor O-Box, Blue follow focus, Red 5" monitor, and some additional accessories plus a 17" laptop in mine. The package weighs close to 65 lbs and I am flying roughly 1500 miles every week around the US. It will fit in the overhead of most planes but not the smaller commuter flights. I usually ask that it get stowed in the flight attendants closet when it doesn't fit. I'm a Gold Medallion Delta flyer so that helps if there's ever an issue. In september alone I will fly over 8000 miles with several different trips and the Petrol will carry everything I need to guarantee a shoot. I would recommend becoming a Skymiles member of whatever airlines you're flying and arriving early at the gate.

I'm a Silver Skymile, used to be gold. I'm traveling with an assistant so we both are carrying packs, but each are lighter, probably 35 lbs. I have about 7 lenses cause I am not that happy with the performance of short Canon zooms, the 70-200 is really good though. I know Delta has a media/film production program thats is pretty easy to qualify for where they allow more luggage, weight etc. but I think this applys mainly to checked luggage.

International travel is a box of chocolates - they can bust you for those 10 batteries and anything over 15lbs as a carry on. New Zealand and Sicily come to mind as places that, on the final leg . . . after been allowed on 2 other planes, have carry on Nazis at the gate with scales and are intolerant

This may not directly apply, but I put this little thing together about traveling with gear and some compact options for medium budget shoots. there are some packing comments below the vid.

On trip last year to Africa while connecting in Germany they weighed my camera bag and it was over... after calmly explaining the situation the gate personal had me go and ask the flight crew including the pilot if they were okay with me bringing the "heavy" bag onboard... of course they agreed when they realized the content. It was a little strange. KLM So it is a crap shoot.
