FCP crashes all the time when working on my proxies w/ studio installer 3 v30.1 (just flat closes out)

Editing MX footage.

I don't see any solutions to this issue in previous posts. :anti-old:

Also, the new build (v30.1) throws hues into the magenta range excessively. I liked that last build for color better.

How many layers and how long is your edit? FCP has always had problems with proxies in complicated projects.

Your hue shift might be because your proxies were made with an older color science. Try making some new proxies and see if that solves that problem. I would make the new proxies in a seperate folder and not overwrite the existing proxies just for saftey.

FCP 7. It crashes on one layer sometimes. I cannot go through and make new proxies for an entire 30 day feature. It would take forever.

Go for a proper offline/online workflow instead of using proxies. They are not recommended in the whitepaper for a reason – they aren't safe for complex projects!

Proxies only take seconds to make. Might take a few minutes to make new proxies (wrappers) for all your footage.

The best choice would be to render all your footage to prores SQ for offline. Now that will take a week, but it is the best way to go. Use Redline or RCX to make the offline prores. Red Rocket makes it really fast.

Doesn't need to take a week: you don't need a full debayer for proxies…

Uli - When you say proxies what do you mean? Quicktime Wrappers or Prores offline files? The term is used for both and that gets confusing?

Avatuar - First you need to get your usename changed to your real name, since that is a requirment of this forum.

When making offline file, you don't need full debayer, just like Uli says. I typically do 1920x1080 1k debayer to ProresSQ and that is great for offline edit. If you do smaller resolution (i.e. 1280x720 or smaller) the render will be even faster.

Once you have the new files, either ProresSQ or newly made quicktime wrappers in a different location, use Clipfinder to conform your edit to the new files.

Also certain effects don't work with quicktime wrappers and things like speed changes will crash FCP on those files. If you plan to do anything except edit one layer with no effects, I recomend not using the quicktime wrappers.

Actually, "proxy" was used for a long time as an expression for lo-rez versions of media to replace the original in a workflow. The "proxies" from the R1 are more like pointers that force QT to play a reduced debayer from the original files.

So, to be more precise, I should have written "offline versions"…
