  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Top Handle vs. 5" Touchscreen

Magic arms similar to Noga arms, RED arms? They are all the same. Bump they hard and they'll get loose on you.

A P&C magic arm will work well - screw it into the side holes on the handle, move the LCD to where you want. About $40.

Try adding an evf into the mix and it all becomes terribly frustrating. I am hoping that the addition of the +1 adapter will sort things out so that I can mount an evf and the monitor on the back. I am really hoping that the design of the +1 monitor is done with practical considerations in mind.

The P&C arm has "teeth" at the ball joints. It holds up pretty well and I am happy. Actually quite surprised since I expected it to move all over the place on its own like you would expect.I can now quickly move my LCD all over the place going between top handle and shoulder rig - can't imagine shooting without it. Shooting undersling while looking off to the side is nice - or lifting the monitor a good 10" above the handle, etc.It wouldn't survive a bump from a linebacker, But I can pick up the scarlet and cage with the arm and it wont move out of angle. And as a bonus... I can show someone else the take quickly by rotating the screen without moving the rig off my shoulder. (Not a big deal to the OP since they are asking about hand held operation)

Allowing for the LCD to mount on the front Rosette of the RED Top Handle has its clear advantages, one of them, the LCD rotates 360 degrees without Obstruction, and can be removed ToolLess in seconds.

To note that The RED Top Handle needs to be reconfigured placing the RED M4 on the outside, so to allow a free space inside the Handle, so that your hands can freely grab on to th eTop Handle without ever been disturbed by the M4 when set in the other standard position, and this is an other reason I love the Rosette positioning of the LCD, which on my previous set up, presented some issues and for this I changed.

And even with the BIG Master Primes, there is on Obstruction of any kind to the Lens, were plentiful space is left all around in the lower part and sides for any type of FF system.

I like this as it leaves the monitor to be mounted elsewhere with no tools.

This on the tip of you handle.

Bjorn,

Do you use this set up with the 9" monitor?

-Peter

It works with both the 5 and 9 inch. The good thing is the handle can be removed and the monitor can be attached directly to the camera if wanted. Think , red should have done it proper and sold the touch scenes with a nicely fitted nato clamp to it. As Screwing it on and of the camera on a daily basis is kind of a hassle I think

Here is a picture of the: nato rail (comes with the handle/clutch) the handle it self, wooden nato clamp, the rosette to nato clamp and the 5.0 touch.
