  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Top 10 Red Epic Questions exclusive VIDEO Interview with Ted Schilowitz - A MUST SEE!

Correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like we can only run a RED LCD or a RED EVF, but not both, off the brain.

Wassup Blair!!!! Okay, here is the dealio. It has not been confirmed, but it still might be possible so don't rule it out yet. It is a feature we all want.
For those trading in their Red Ones for stage three, it would be great to keep the 5.6 lcd as the second lcd (no need for it to be touchscreen). Hopefully they can sort out some pixel wizardry to enable the 5.6 lcd. If you have the 7 inch lcd, you are good to go.

As for redmote being a 1st monitor (and I'm sure the Red team will chime in) but as far as I understand it, the redmote will not contain a video feed. It is an lcd with just graphic menus. I hope I am wrong on this though.

Perhaps it was just wishful thinking but I had imagined there would be two 14 pin Lemo taps with independently configurable display parameters. For example the operator could tailor the RED EVF display by toggling off all status info they didn't want and the 1st could customize the LCD screen to select 1:1 image magnification (perhaps even with the focus assist color edge), plus histogram, battery level, etc.

Is the RedMote capable of being the 1st's monitor? I didn't think it would have enough resolution for pulling focus, am I missing something. Perhaps the 1st would have both a RedMote and an SDI fed hi-res LCD?

Just curious. Perhaps this could have been question #11...

PS: Thanx Ted & Tonaci.

Just a guess but I should imagine extra monitoring Lemo taps will be on the I/O module... RED have installed all but the kitchen sink on the Epic brain, seems logical to not duplicate ports when space is tight when you can easily add it to a module.

All the best,

By the way.. the touchscreen focus and touchscreen menu changing is insane.
You can get a close up look of how it works in the behind the scenes video link.

Epic is definitely the dream camera we have all been waiting for.

GREAT Tonaci!

Thank you!

By the way, we don´t wear shoes indoors in Norway either ;-)

Terrific Tonaci. This is like food for the hungry! It seems a bit harsh though to make the Red One film its so obviously superior successor. The size of the camera is difficult to believe.

To be clear, I never expected the RedMote to be a substitute for a RED LCD monitor; touchscreen, 7" or 5.6".

What I did expect is to be able to plug in both a RED EVF and RED LCD. Then choose desired status/display info, magnification, etc independently for each one. This way the operator and the 1st AC will each have what they want. IMHO what I am seeing with the touchscreen LCD looks like an excellent tool for the focus puller (1st AC) and fine for a solo operator. I suppose I could just find an SDI fed EVF from a 3rd party, but I already ordered the Bomb EVF and when I used Gibby's I really liked it.

The RedTeam is probably way ahead of me on this and there is a loop through or something. Perhaps one of the add on modules will offer a Lemo tap for a second "smart" monitor. Just curious like everyone else.

Blair, I asked this yesterday to Ted as well. Basically if you want an EVF and LCD with just the brain, the answer is to use the EVF with the LEMO connector and use either a cheap HDMI monitor or an HD-SDI monitor for the LCD option. All outputs are independently configurable with what info, look etc you set on them and a third party LCD will be able to display all the Red's info on it if that's how you want it set up. Only thing missing will be touchscreen support but everything can be controlled without that so it's no big loss.

If you take a quick glance the Epic looks like a DSLR sitting on the table.
It sure does!

Here's my 5D MkII next to it yesterday.

Mindblowing isn't it? :D

Cheers from Japan,

Paul :)

Thanks Paul, it is really good to get clarity on that!

Thats a real pity.
Im going to use the BOMB evf a lot, I'd would have loved to have been able to keep the 5 inche touch screen LCD as well for the client to look at over my shoulder, it seems so perfect. Now we have to chuck some after market (battery powered) rubbish on the side of it adding even more weight.

O well.... cant win em all.

Un-freaking-believable.

The auto focus, the changes made to the cooling system, the new lens mounts, the weight, the monitoring options....

What Red has given small time filmmakers is nothing short of a freakin' miracle.

Hey Tonaci, thanks for sharing this...this is the most epic coverage I have seen to date. I am really considering reducation. Thanks TED, hope to visit Vietnam one day. Hit me up if your ever in Brooklyn NY, a round on me. Cheers.
