Yup. The only reason it is on my list is because it was it was so pretty. The film tested my patience to the max and I love Malick's others films so I'm not someone who just writes off everything that Malick does as being pretty yet empty. Just my opinion.
I'm right there with you, Andrew. I wanted so much to like Tree of Life, but just couldn't. I agree that it was pretty and is definitely in the running for best cinematography. Maybe it's because of all the build up of the film to the point of release... To be perfectly blunt about it, if they didn't dance around the story in such a pretentious way and just presented it, there wouldn't be a whole lot of unique story there. At the core of it we had a boomer-generation family that was pretty much run-of-the-mill for the time and place they were set in. To be perfectly blunt about it, if it weren't for the cinematography, I would've fallen asleep. I'm also not sure I understand the VFX nominations for ToL.... But that's the FX guy in me talking. I found the animations in Hubble 3D to be more compelling (most of the celestial sequence was done the same way, by the same people for ToL), with the addition of some coffee creamer, paint and ink in a water tank and the dinos just didn't do it for me, didn't think they were that well done.
After writing that, Tom will probably never speak to me again...
Actually, most of the FX nods for films this year have me scratching my head a bit. But looking back on the films of 2011, other than Harry Potter and Transformers, there wasn't much else for big-budget VFX. I haven't seen Immortals, it went straight on to my future Netflix queue.
So based on the films I have seen, here's my top 10:
1. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
2. Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy
3. The Descendants
4. TinTin
5. Hugo
6. Take Shelter
7. Drive
8. The Artist
9. War Horse
10. The Tree of Life
10. Of Gods and Men
My 10's are a tie, I really can't decide there... Also Drive didn't do it for me as much as it seems to for some others... And I rated TinTin higher than I think a lot of others would, but it was a nice diversion, well done and nicely entertaining. But what can I say... FX/Animation guy here. I'm also tempted to flip-flop my 1 and 2, but I think my RED goggles have me a bit biased.
Have not seen a few of the others people have mentioned. Didn't make it to Moneyball... Tried to see the muppets, shot on RED and Amy Adams, that's like a double WIN. But the family out-voted me and we saw Arthur Christmas instead... shit happens.
