  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ISO, ISO...

That's what I do and the only reason I use Canon DSLRs is because they produce the cleanest high ISO image on long exposures.

Hey Pawel, have you ever considered "frame averaging" or "frame compounding" on motion picture footage to achieve super clean, noise free images for stills? This is much more powerful than long exposures because it removes any temporal sensor noise or temporal compression noise. (You'll need a compositing system like flame, shake or after effects.)

Hey now that I think of it, frame compounding would be a kick ass tool to offer in Redcine-X for super clean, full resolution stills use.

Epic and Scarlet will be killer timelapse machines. :)

I used to do some crazy timelapse boxes about 10 years ago and I'm super
excited about what we'll be able to do in the new cameras.

Now I'm drooling wildly at the possibilities that Epic is going to give us. As long as you guys have a 15-20 second exposure setting in that new timelapse mode I will be really happy.

that's a very good idea.

i've used frame averaging a lot just by taking multiple stills (works for scenes with extremely little or no motion). it's been around for awhile. this is what the sweet space telescopes like the hubble use. seriously reduces noise. highly recommended.

*for stills output you don't need flame or shake or anything. you can do it in photoshop pretty easily with layers (but each layer opacity for each layer needs to be equally balanced)

for example, layer opacity should be (starting at the bottom) 1/1, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4... (100%, 50%, 33.33%, 25%...) and on it goes 1/(n+1) where n = previous layer

Again... we aren't done. Here is a bit larger size. ISO 4000.

Jim

So with a bit of light in the shadows and noise reduction we'll have ISO4000 for 2k projection?!?!!

Could we PLHEASE see some motion???? PLS!!

No, screw it!! Just start upgrading! Please!

Congratulations Jim!

Very impressive!

Is this the new sensor in your Red One camera?

I'm available to beta test that new sensor in my Red One if you need another opinion!

I'm embarrassed to have posted the last thread with the images of different ISOs. I should have waited. Graeme and Deanan have been very busy in the last week so I thought I would give the new stuff a quick workout. David Mullen asked for tungsten... since I don't have a tungsten light here, I grabbed a candle. It white balances out to under 2000K, less than tungsten. I turned off all the lights in the garage and lit the candle. Best I can tell is this is ISO 4000.

The boys are going to yell at me again for posting this because they still aren't done. It won't be the last time...

Jim

Hi Jim,

Any idea where the 'purple' flame comes from?

Best

Stephen

Fearless. Don't you have 'purple' flame jokes in the UK?

No Idea, it's 15 years since I lived in the UK, I don't remember any so if there were any they weren't that funny.

I can only start to imagine what this will do to night shoots, let alone concert shoots.

If, as discussed on another thread, the Epic/Scarlet will have a "quick-turnaround" file format, this camera will be a killer in the huge ENG market.

And I just love the fact that Jim lights a test chart with a candle and his iPhone.

Exciting times. And happy holidays everyone.

What was the lens?

Red Zoom at f/2.8.

A prime probably would not flare in this situation. You can get any lens to flare under specific conditions. It is just some lenses are more prone to flaring than others.

drooling at the thought of getting my scarlet underwater without lights! absolutely loving the clean low-light shots.
