  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tom Lowe...

Really good to know, thanks and this will help me know what to expect when I want to shoot higher frame rates on this project.
Is there a list somewhere of the different speeds formats, and what ratio to expect with each??

Just got back from 7 days of filming on Lake Powell with the Epic. On our third or forth day, we got hit with a huge thunder- and rainstorm, causing us to flee into a cave. Soon the rain passed, and we headed back onto the lake. Within an hour, we were filming a super-epic rainbow, and then blasting up Anasazi canyon with the gyros and Epic roaring while a stunning sunset lit the sky and water. Wow! What a day!

I used Laforet's gyros, and I can report that this ATM rig with two KS8s was enough to stabilize the Epic, even with the Master Prime. I do think that I was really pushing the weight limit, though. A x3 KS8 or x2 KS12 would have been much better.

Tom, first of all I want to say how stoked I am about your work - a true inspiration!

We are planning a shoot (on a boat) that is in need of some stabilization. Our shoot is off the coast of Vancouver Island (its no Deadliest Catch and shouldnt be too gnarly) and we will are looking for a cost friendly solution to shoot scenics of the coastline on open water. I was wondering your thoughts of the ATM rig and how it performed. This looks like it could be our best option.

We will be shooting on a combo of HDSLR's and a striped down Epic.

Any insight would be great.

Thanks so much.

Hi Tom,

Great thread, thanks.

I think Stacey Spears and I just missed you at Mono Lake last month.

I'm ordering a 536, but need to add a half ball to support the cineslider, what are you using for the half ball on your rig?

Cheers,

Steve

Here is my AC Chris M's wireless Epic "control center," which includes wireless iris and focus control via Preston motors, wireless stop/start via the sync port, plus the Redmote velcro'd to the top to change settings and punch in for focus.

Very effective!!

Here is my Epic in its current configuration. I've been shooting 95% of the time lately on the 18-foot Kessler Crane.

A photo of my protege Nilo horsing around in front of the Ultra Prime 8R :)

This lens is deadly on the Epic!

Ultra prime 8R on Epic...that is just mindblowing. What a dream.
Would you care to share a little more on that when you got some time?
Would be fun to hear how you use that setup.

Hey there Tom. I love your compact rigging going on.
I've got to ask, what motor are you using for your realtime Kessler slider moves? The 200 or the 500?

I think I use the 500 most of the time. Eric also sent me a 1000:1.

Keep in mind that his new system will have encoded motors and is going to kick all kinds of ass. Key frame-able, lens motor controls, wifi... you can run it off iPhone, iPads, Droids, Laptops, etc. Probably finished by the end of this year. I'll be testing it in November extensively and will report about it.

Hahahaha.... you are lucky, Ketch, you did not have to go for a swim in the Salton Sea for a few hours searching for a sunken Epic M!!
