More from Lake Powell! About 2 hours before this rainbow appeared, we got caught in a big lightning, thunder and rainstorm, and had to flee into a cave with our boat as it poured rain. As soon as the rain stopped, I knew we might be in for a treat, so we headed back out onto the lake with our fingers crossed. What came first was this rainbow, what came next was the most epic sunset clouds and light I have ever seen at Powell. After we felt we had the rainbow footage in the bag, we noticed that the rest of the sky was flaring up, so we blasted up Anasazi canyon at 35 miles an hour, while I filmed at 5K full-sensor 96fps on the 16mm MP on gyros. It looked so, so epic with the water rushing at the lens. I cannot wait to get home and see this footage!!

I do hope you can share some of it with us, sounds like truely amazing footage. :drool5:

Well, unless there was some kind of huge waterdrop on the lens when I was filming that run up Anasazi canyon, it will certainly be in the next TimeScapes trailer, which I am hoping to have ready in November. I was actually thinking that it might be cool to make a 4K DCP or DPX version, and come screen it at Red Studios. That would be a great way to premiere the new footage!! I am so psyched to see all this new Epic footage at 4K. :drool5: :drool5: :drool5:

Ok, here's a tiny little video preview of some of the Powell stuff.

I'd buy a ticket for that.

Just bring some ice-cold Pacificos and a lime :cheers2:

Good work Tom, as usual. I had some luck lately with "fire in the sky" conditions too - see some sample frames below.

...Casey, that's an Arri LMB 5. I don't really like it, though, because it does not have a rotating tray, which really sucks when you are trying to use pola filters with wide lenses.

That's what I thought, but it is not always as useful. I don't use polas as extensively as I would like on wide angle lenses because at one angle they darken more than another. I screwed up a few shots with a pola by having big black blob in the middle of clear blue sky...:) But, of course, being able to rotate the pola is better than not being able to rotate it.

Tom - when will we be seeing some of this stuff on blu-ray? Beautiful!

After a year of thinking about this, last night, I finally re-filmed this Navajo boy doing the traditional Hopping Crow dance, but this time I shot it on the Epic at 120fps 4K in an EPIC location in northern Arizona. Last time around, all I had was the MX with Zeiss standards. What a difference a year makes!! I used the Kessler Shuttle Pod and Revoltion head. The final footage is completely unreal... I cannot wait to see this projected at 4K.

Lovely. The preservation of traditions like this always strikes me as hugely important but often under appreciated...hope to see more of it!

Hey Tom what RedCode can you shoot at this time on the Epic at 4K 120fps?? And what are some of the other RedCodes you have used so far with their K size also. I have a project but Im feeling a little limited on having to use RedCode 28 at 120 2K with my RedOne. I would like to know what RedCodes are now up and running with the Epic.
Thanks and cant wait to see the Dance on the big screen.
Keep the inside views coming.

Just from memory, I believe you can shoot 4K HD at 120 fps at 10:1 compression. The quality is very very high.

Only once have I been able to break down the codec at 12:1 5K 96fps, and that was shooting some ferns and trees at Big Sur. I got some blocking. Of course, as faster SSDs emerge, the available compression ratios will come down, meaning that you can use less compression with higher framerates.
