  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tom Lowe...

Hi Tom,

I have a question regarding HDRx: How much over do you expose
the A stream to get a nice result after blending the two streams? I
tried 2 over for the A and HRDx set to

Current Best practice is for HDRx is to set proper normal exposure for your base track (foreground elements or subject as an example) and then set the x track set to the proper number of stops over normal to protect the highlights you are worrying about.

Paul is correct. I might overexpose by like 1/2 a stop on main channel sometimes, though. I only shoot about 5% HDRx right now, though.

Filming with Epic in the Arizona desert. I still have my camera in the ultra-light-weight config... loving it!

Prepping the Epic for a week-long shoot at Lake Powell. Vince was kind enough to loan me his dual KS8 ATM gyro rig, so this should be a lot of fun!!

The Master Prime does feel a little heavy on the ATM, so I might have to switch to my Zeiss standards instead. We'll see.

One thing I have begun to do in my spare time is to shoot sky-replacement background plates at 5K for other directors who contact me with this request. The high resolution makes the Epic perfect for this task whether the film was shot on film, IMAX, Alexa, Epic, whatever. Epic background plates are perfect for sky replacement -- so much resolution, latitude and detail. And it only takes me a couple minutes to knock these plates out. I can literally pause my own shot, aim the camera at the sky, knock out a plate, then go right back to shooting on my crane or sticks or slider or whatever.

Very, very good idea Tom.

I forgot to mention that because Epic sky plates are shot RAW, they are very useful as plates because the color temp can be adjusted easily to match any foreground.

Just got back from 7 days of filming on Lake Powell with the Epic. On our third or forth day, we got hit with a huge thunder- and rainstorm, causing us to flee into a cave. Soon the rain passed, and we headed back onto the lake. Within an hour, we were filming a super-epic rainbow, and then blasting up Anasazi canyon with the gyros and Epic roaring while a stunning sunset lit the sky and water. Wow! What a day!

I used Laforet's gyros, and I can report that this ATM rig with two KS8s was enough to stabilize the Epic, even with the Master Prime. I do think that I was really pushing the weight limit, though. A x3 KS8 or x2 KS12 would have been much better.

Anson, here is some information about the ATM gyro rig from Aerial Exposures: http://www.aerialexposures.com/gyroplatform.htm

Casey, that's an Arri LMB 5. I don't really like it, though, because it does not have a rotating tray, which really sucks when you are trying to use pola filters with wide lenses.

Those gyros belong to reduser member Vincent Laforet. He let me borrow them for this shoot. :)

Hi Tom,

If you rotate the clip-on mattebox itself onto the lens, do you start getting vignetting at the corners?
