  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tom Lowe...

It is pretty easy to see what firmware the camera has and it is really helpful if you would post it.

Jim

Jim,
I've sent an email to Deanan about this problem. I didn't experience this one while using v1.4.9. firmware.

It looks like v1.6.12. and v1.6.20 are problematic now. Maybe the REDmote is the cause because I got frozen camera a few times while stopping the recording via REDmote.
Keep in mind that my REDmote wasn't shipped during v1.4.9 firmware release and maybe that's why I didn't experience it earlier.
Also, I've seen the blue timecode during HDRx recording... Everything is in my email.

I had some kind of crazy problem this evening. I think I might have pushed a wrong button or something, because all of a sudden I could not roll. When I pressed roll, instead of a red dot appearing to indicate that I was rolling, a yellow dot appeared, and the timecode numbers turned yellow instead of red. I quickly called a friend at Red. I had to restore default settings in the Maintenance tab, and that fixed the problem. Apparently I had somehow triggered some kind of pre-roll function. Anyone had this happen?

Hi Tom, go to the shortkeys menu....and set the half press action setting on the different record buttons (brain, sidehandle, redmote) to - No Action -. will never happen again.

i am on 1.6.24 now. i disabled the half press action on the record button the first day i did get the epic.

this happened me once i hit the wrong button dont remember which one but started to see blinking yellow dot instead of red so had to shut it down (fw v1.6.12)
once we were shooting for hours at 8th hour we saw hundreds of weird horizantal lines on Bomb EVF restarted it and waited like a 1-2 mins to get cold...
didnt have any problems except these.
just upgraded latest firmware and camera running perfectly

One thing I have been considering lately is trying to add a follow-focus motor. I need something incredibly simple, though. maybe a motor that can mount to 3-inch carbon rods under the lens or something? any suggestions? I want to keep my configuration super, super simple and light.

How sophisticated do you need it? if you are simply trying to adjust remotely and don't need to impress clients - I'm making a simple, low cost setup using RC servo motors. $175 for the unit that holds the servo and attaches to the rods, and a couple gears. (For price comparison purposes, Zacuto gets $75 just for the rod clamp piece.)

Servos are anywhere from $5 for an el cheapo to $75 for a top quality digital. A very simple control knob for $20 or a more sophisticated dual controller for about $99 or a 4 unit controller with programmable functions for about $200. You can also use any old RC radio and receiver to control it completely wireless at RC plane ranges (i.e. 100s of yards). The servos themselves are very smooth and precise, if a bit noisier than cine motors.

Hey Michael, sorry Tom for a slight hijack of your thread here but some might be interested in an idea I have:
Would it be possible to make an electronic zoom control that can rack focus at the same time in an underwater housing?
For example: I'm in the surf with a housing and I am zoomed in all the way on the take off and as the surfer comes towards me I am pulling the lens to wide and racking focus at the same time throughout the shoot?
Adjustable timing would be critical for different surf breaks I gather.......or I just stick with what I know shooting wide and getting in close on infinity focus?

I'm completely new here and don't have an Epic yet, but I thought I would chime in on the remote FF question. I'm a big Kessler user and I see that you are as well Tom. I know they are working on a new keyframe based motion system that uses a lot of the pieces you have already. In this demo video http://vimeo.com/23356839 by swissfilmakers you can see that they have one of their motors already attached and functioning as a follow focus, and as part of their whole system which can work for realtime and timelapse. Being able to keyframe focus with the whole move seems like a great thing. I realize its not out yet, but maybe they need beta testers?

Yes, I used the new key-frame system last week when Eric came out to visit. It's fantastic.

In this case, though, I am looking for a tiny, wireless lens motor designed specifically for use with cinema lenses like Master Primes and Leica Summilux-Cs. Something I could maybe mount on 3-inch carbon rods under the lens? Maybe Preston?

Tom,

What about something like this?

DSC_1325-FDTimes_CineGear2011-1920.jpg

Leica Lens Controls

Prototype by cmotion seen at Cine Gear: focus and iris motors for Leica Summilux-C Primes from Band Pro.
The motor assembly attaches directly to the lens with a bracket, providing a way to control focus and iris without having to use lens rods.
This helps keep things light, tidy and compact for handheld, remote, Steadicam and 3D rigs.

Wow, great! I wonder if they make something similar for MPs?

These 536's don't have mid or ground support, but as you can see, they are plenty strong! Plus I can use them in mud, snow, water, salt water, etc. They blow away the CF sticks that Vinten sent me with the Vision 8AS.

I even use these sticks as the base for my Kessler Pocket Jib, with over 100 lbs on it.

Everything about this picture is awesome. :thumbup1:

One of the crazy things about the Epic in this new ultra-light-weight configuration is that I have begun to use some of my DSLR accessories with it. This is something I could never have done with the MX!!! The small, compact, light-weight configuration of this camera is literally changing the way I am doing cinematography.

Yes, I actually have the Canon mount right now, but I got it at exactly the wrong time, and have not even used it yet! :( I've been filming wide-angle rock-formation desert shots on cranes. I am finally going to use it tonight and tomorrow night to try to film the moonset with my EF 600mm + 2X! Sorry to Jim and Jarred for slacking on this. I knew I was going to the wrong location when I got the mount handed to me. I should have passed it along to the next guy right then. My apologies. It's been a super crazy time for me.

Hi Tom,

I have a question regarding HDRx: How much over do you expose
the A stream to get a nice result after blending the two streams? I
tried 2 over for the A and HRDx set to 3.

What's your experience for exposing HDRx?

Thanks Michael
