Hi everyone,
Editorial Specs asks for record run with ascending hours……I've only ever done free run with the Epic, is this old school record run even possible? I couldn't get the hours to reset to anything but :00:00:00.

RED cameras always had the 2 timecodes modes recorded simultaneously
Absolute timecode (AC) is the free run (time based TC) and Edge timecode (EC) is the rec run (starts at 01:00:00:00 and increments on each take)

both are always recorded and you can choose which one to display on camera and which one to display in RCX viewer
When you export from RCX, you can select under export options / other if you want your clips to be created with Absolute or Edge TC...

On Epic, Edge Timecode resets to zero with each new magazine, so it's not true Record Run, and is much less potentially useful as a result.

When I was shooting tape I would always increment rec run timecode to the next full hour when changing tapes, so you could do the same for edge code when you change magazines. Unless of course you shoot for more than an hour per magazine.

I think Rec Run is a dinosaur, an old spec left over from tape-based work in the 1990s. I'm appalled and amazed that it's still a spec being requested, usually by reality show producers and cable channels who aren't used to anything else. I've run into a few of them who are still shooting with Drop Frame timecode, on top of that -- just insane.

Sadly, often the job is to give the client what they ask for, not to try to educate them into doing things "the right way."

When you format the mag in-camera, the format dialog will allow you to set the starting edge timecode.
