  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

TIME AND DATE ISSUE...really?

Unfortunately not. The camera has to be running (and counting hours) for the internal battery to charge. No idea if this could be addressed via firmware or would need a physical modification.

This is such a design flaw... sorry, but it really is. Makes no sense what so ever for so many users.

The insult to injury is that there have been multi-generations of cameras that now have this (and it’d be ironic if the RED1 didn’t exhibit the problem)...

And yeah, still haven’t heard if it’s the same for DSMC1... Also, has anyone actually done it yet to confirm it works?

Yes I have charged for 20 hours and now after a week of not using the camera it is ok...BUT...I have more hours on the amera and not actually using it...

Why can't RED just take notice and manage it so that if we plug AC into the camera for 35 hours without it being on will charge the internal battery? Seriously, Red support have returned two times to me with non-answers, even with a log sent in and here on Reduser this thread is the first of many that got traction on the issue and it's dead silent from Red as well. Shouldn't it be possible to at least include such a charging method as a firmware update?

This was DSMC2 though, correct? Did they say if the same thing works with DSMC1?

I'd rather put 30 hours on the camera, than spend the $100x2 for shipping + $100 labour fee + $1 for the replacement battery (not to mention, be out of a camera for 1 or 2 weeks). Plus there's no guarantee that it won't die again in the next 6mths. Besides, there are no moving/mechanical parts, so putting hours on the camera doesn't exactly cause 'wear and tear'...

Circuit boards are likely to last a long time. However, components on the board can fail prematurely due to heat cycles; solder joints, integrated circuits, electrolytic capacitors, flash modules etc.

Perhaps more importantly, if the camera is to retain its maximum resale value (in a universe where six months is considered obsolete), low clocked hours are one of the primary metrics when evaluating a purchase. A throwback to pre-digital no doubt, but old habits die hard.

Its very easy to rack up hours with the camera doing very little on the most gentle of shoots. Then another cam with a tenth of the hours has been through war zones.

I just tried the "30 hour trick" (for 60 hours) and so far it hasn't worked.

After turning on my Scarlet Dragon and letting it sit for about 60 hours, I re-set the date/time and then turned it off and immediately back on. No luck.

Re-set it again and leaving it on. I am not optimistic but remain hopeful... make that wishful.

This sucks. I have had this battery replaced multiple times and still face this situation.

UPDATE: Failed a second time. The "fix" not working.

How is this still a thing? Let's get this fixed RED

Yeah, so the 30hours “fix” is likely DSMC2 only. Though I do wonder why they couldn’t just swap the battery with a rechargeable one on DSMC1 cameras as well...

And yeah, this is TFH...

Imagine the cost of a recall to fix this. I dont imagine we`ll hear much from RED on this.

Yeah, I'm taking delivery real soon on a new Weapon. Not crazy about receiving a brain with unresolved know issues that require a return trip to the factory. This and the WiFi issue are things that need to be resolved before shipping anymore new product. Not like Weapon is a brand new product . . .

If it's any comfort to you I haven't had this issue on either of my Weapons.

Yah, but your gear is blessed by the High Priestess of REDdom ;-)

Phil, As far as I understand this issue only shows up if your camera is not in use for some time. I think it is safe to say you use your camera on a regular basis so I´m not surprised you don´t suffer from it. Those folks that pause or just keep a spare unit are affected as the rechargeable battery drains and the camera needs to be running for quite some time to charge it. Not sure if this is only a batch of cameras that are affected or just the way the cameras are used.
@Terry, DSMC1 cameras (I understand you are talking about a Scarlet Dragon aka DSMC1) don´t have a rechargeable battery so you won´t see any benefit from keeping it on for some time. If the battery on DSMC1 does not hold charge it needs to be replaced. I did not have this issue with my DSMC1 cameras so far, if this happens to you repeatedly there must be something else that needs to be checked, sucks if you just get a new battery that won´t last as expected. I´d suggest to be clear about that when getting the camera serviced the next time. Good luck!

Terry I had this issue with my scarlet dragon and I opened the camera and replaced the battery myself, it worked perfectly.
Now I've seen that it's not the same with my new SW

This is not an issue for those who regularly use them since they always charge. However, for people like myself, who work with not only cameras but editing, color grading, writing etc. we shoot some days and then we might end up into editing, grading or prepping another project for two to three weeks. I have a DSLR, and old watch that I thought I'd thrown away and a laptop from 2004 that all keep date and time and internal information fine after years and my Weapon can't even hold onto timecode and dates for three days with further risks of depleting the battery permanently?

There's no excuse for such a bad design flaw on a $30K tech.

Why don't Red give proper answers to this? Seriously? Semi-fixes and support that replace batteries that just does the same thing? This needs a permanent fix, at least firmware that enable charging with AC while the camera is off. How long must it take to get some proper support for us?

I think this forum keeps everyone aware of issues. But a lot of customers are not on REDUSER so they may not have even noticed the battery problem yet. If RED make an official announcement and that information gets spread RED opens a very expensive can of worms. Considering even the cameras being returned are sent back to customers still show the problem the cost to answer this could be stratospheric. Imagine shipping costs alone.

Redusers will vent and then this will sort of subside and RED will maybe address it in Monstro or DSMC3.
