  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Testing new build:

Gigabyte TRX40 AORUS XTREME
Gigabyte GC-TITAN RIDGE TB3 card
3970x CPU (until 3990x arrives)
2x Titan RTX
1x Samsung SATA 3 ssd (system)
4x Seagate Firecuda 2TB m.2 PCIe 4.0 drives (projects)
Noctua NH-U14s-TR4-SP3 cooler
8x32 GB G.skill 3200 MHz CL16 RAM
BMD card

Early testing thus far looks good. Sonnet dual cfast to internal nvme drive runs at max card speed of ~1.1GB/s combined over TB3.

The Titan Ridge card is not bundled but is available separately.

Hey DJ, Keep us updated on this build. I would love to see the R20 cinebench score on your setup. The 3970x has been tearing it up.

These Seagate drives are quick:

CB20 is just a hair over 17k at stock speeds.

Wow that's an impressive CB20 score! And the (4) 2TB m.2 drives are killing it

Is the Aorus Xtreme the only TRX40 mother board that supports TB3 ? I guess the TB3 card takes up one of those valuable PCIe slots.

I bet we will get official releases date and price on the 3990x at CES. 64 cores should post the top CB20 score. It should just be a CPU swap for you.

The Gigabyte TRX40 Designaire is the only other one that I am aware of, but that one does not have built in 10GbE.

Also hoping for the launch of the WRX80 ChipSet for TR3. From what I understand it is a more Work Station oriented ChipSet for TR3. Hoping for a few more of those valuable PCIe slots and the ability to load more ECC Ram that the limited 64GB's of the TRX40

Current TRX40 motherboards support 256 GB (8x32 GB) (ECC and non ECC).

I have heard rumors of WRX80 but I guess we’ll have to wait and see. My only real complaints are there are no 7 + slot boards and no U.2 connectors in the current crop.

I have looked through the Supported Memory Spec Sheets of a lot of TRX40 MB and none of them seem to support ECC Ram in all 8 Slots. They only support 4 slots with a maximum of 16GB per dim. If you go Non ECC then you can populate all 8 with 32GB dims.
https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/TRX40-AORUS-XTREME-rev-10/support#support-doc

That is just a Qualified Vendors List (QVL) for the TRX40 AORUS XTREME.
This doesn't mean that memory which is not listed doesn't work (The memory controller is in the threadripper, not in the vendors motherboard).

I opted for 256GB of non-ECC in my 3960x build. So far, so good. I’ll let you guys know if any of my bits get scrambled by cosmic rays or a transient cloud of Radon or something.

HEHEHE
Jeff Please could you post which components you chose for your build. I am seriously considering making the leap to TR3.

3970x @ 4.1 GHz all-core turbo runs about 17,900 CB20. Not terrible.

Hey DJ,

Dose your GC-TITAN RIDGE TB3 card work good with your setup? I was researching on Gigabyte's site and they list the TRX40 Designare has the motherboard compatible with the Titan Ridge TB3 card.

thanks for any info !!
