  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Saw this in the flame user group. He got pretty good bang for the buck in that system runing linux 2018 flame. Going trough 8k r3ds in background etc..

Anyone have have any sugestion how to get even faster if running flame. If limiting to one gpu forground and one background.

Here is his picklist.

Flame on linux is now on pretty good priced subscription an also now there is a free student license and a 30 day trail for mac and linux. Seams like they finally started to realize that high prices maybe is not the best way forward.

Realized im missing an H in the headline... How do I change that? Dyslexic me tapping away on my I phone. lol.

Didn't even notice the missing "h" until you said it. :)
Don't see the point with 10x SSDs, complete waste of money, that would be over 1TB/s with spinners with more capacity.

Why did you choose two titan x over gtx 1080ti? Was it due to the more mature driver on the titan x?

Not sure why he did that. But I assume SSD´s are not that costly and silent / less heat and should be faster when you call for multiple clips at once etc / when doing composting that is key. But I dont know much about drive speeds. So please if you can explain further. You mean if if make a 10 drive raid it does not matter if you got SSD´s or HDD´s?

Looks like the build was done before the Ti was even announced.

Yes it was built / done pre 1080Ti.

Another friend of mine is setting up a flame machine with dual 1080Ti now and tomorrow he will do similar tests. As I understand the 1080Ti should be faster then the TitanX. and the X you can not even order any more.

good news, i dropped Flame in 1999 as it was pretty useless for longform back then, the priceing structure and open hardware make it worth a second look in 2017

Question: Need to set up a new system here shortly for a 10 x60min 4k TV series where we do the grading and online. We now got all the material in the edit bay as proxies and then we got the source 8k r3ds on 40x 4Tb HDD´s. And now we will start the online grading process.

So I want to do them one episode at the time on a quick raid and keep as many episodes on there as possible while doing the rest.

One folder for each episode that holds the following.
On folder with r3dTrims 20frames handles.
One folder with the above as 4k Flatpass prores 4444
One folder with the graded episode as a proress 4k 444
One folder with the onlined master, DCP sound etc.

First I was thinking of just getting another 8xpegasus. But I was thinking that now there might be better faster solutions, no? Still need to be backcompatible with thunderbolt2 to work with trashcans etc. but I was thinking there was a thunderbolt 3 alternative, or was it not possible to get 12 bay pegasus before? Would be happy for any suggestions.

Are you on Mac Pro exclusively?

Pegasus does make a TB3 version that should work on TrashCan using the Apple adapter.

For multi-platform small group workflows the Qnap TVS-1282T is really interesting. TB2 for your mac, 10 or 40 GbE for your PC's. 8x 3.5" + 6 SSD for write cache or drop in an NVME card if you want to go nuts. I've got one plus the expander on my desk and I like it a lot.
