  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Thoughts and Tips responses here...

I love the new color science and the richer more saturated look. Given the slow playback framerate (4fps when compared to Redcine at 12fps) on a Mac Pro Nehalem 8 core 2.93GHz at 1/2 res... could we have the playback cache be a little longer? I like playing back from cache due to getting the full framerate... just wish I had more of it. I see that the playback cache is also much more improved than the older version... it's actually usable now. How is the amount of caching decided? Is it based on available memory or is there a set limit?

This is great. I now found my new favorite color space/gamma combinatioin.

Does this build have the Loupe function that was shown at Red Day? I don't see it, but I haven't used the old versions of Redcine-X much so I might be missing something.

I also love having the denoise option straight from the R3D. That's going to be really handy.

Looks like we'll get a new camera build soon since to export look settings to camera, you have to use RedColor and RedGamma, which you currently can't do in camera.

I know this wasn't really discussed in the tips thread but I was wondering how complicated it was going to be for me ( someone who has never used any footage over 1080p) to compress my 2/3 raw file to 1080p for blueray use...

Not difficult at all. It can be scaled and exported from RC-X as 1080p DPX, TIFF or Quicktime files on version 54 for Windows I am running. It doesn't have all of the tools of the latest Mac versions, but still a huge improvement over the old Redcine.

Oh My God. This is MINDBLOWING. I had gotten used to a kind of low-saturation aesthetic, owing to personal preference and a general dislike for the way digital color tends to look. This has all changed in the blink of an eye. My god, this new RedColor is unbelievable. RedcineX is a helluva tool. Not to mention the new gamma and all the new controls. Im shocked. My footage just took a huge leap forward. Thanks, red.

Side note - how do I output from Redcinex 4.5k footage that doesnt look squeezed? Im used to using rocketcine x where it outputs with black bars...

Define a new output that is the right scale.

I'm trying to export 4K 2:1 to 1920X1080 but i get stretched image :(

Also, i'm always unable to delete the clips in the bin :(

Oh well, i must be tired...

all in the math. 4k 2:1 cant go straight to 1920x1080.
4096/1920 = 2.133
2048/1080 = 1.896

4k HD (3840x2160) will down size perfectly.

I know Andy,

But in Rocket Cine, there is a "fit width" option, it scales right in a 1920X1080 with a little black space top and bottom.

Just drag them out...

Jim

Ahrrrr....

I was draging them to the desktop...it it copied on the desktop.

If i drag the clips on REDCINE X windows, it's OK.

I was right...i'm tired... :)

Thanks Jim

Wow, I've been evaluating using Reds for a BBC/NBC show and I had been thinking that the look we were getting had been a little de-saturated for what we are doing, compared to the film results we currently get. But looking at some of the old drag racing footage (that I keep on my laptop to evaluate new builds) the new colour science is terrific and really just knocked that desaturation on the head. I'm going to have to go back to my producers.

Of course we tend to grade at a larger facility who have their baselight system working off r3ds. So if I'm not going through Redcine-X, how long will it take for these new methods to trickle into the post system for systems such as Baselight?

Hi Dale,

We normally don't run completely at the bleeding edge for the website release, for obvious reasons. However, we often have another build available on request which is identical to the website release apart from using a beta version of the R3D SDK. If you need to try out the new colour science, get your post house to contact Baselight Support and they'll sort you out.

There is now a newer version (84) in the same place as 82e...

Took me a while to really grasp what FLUT is. For me it clicked when I ignored the picture for a moment, and just looked at the histogram and sliding the FLUT settings around.

Great additional tool, thanks Græme and the rest of the team!

REDundead is a command line tool that recovers R3D files from drives and CF cards that have been formatted to the file system that has been corrupted. It does a great job of recovering the R3D files unless the drive was erased and then recorded onto again... but it might recover the remaining files.

And for those of us with an aversion to command line tools, there is R3D Data Manager, which includes a babelfish translater from creative it dude to geek.
