Here in Phoenix I've found that anything temperature wise over 100 degrees your going to have heat issues. Plan ahead. Shade or no shade it doesn't matter- RED does not like hot air being sucked into it's core. Not sure what RED's actual heat threshold is, but for us in here in Phoenix it only takes about 30 minutes from power up to having the camera shut down in our high temperatures (110+)
Cold packs aren't worth a damn, they last maybe 20 minutes. Gel packs aren't much better. Ice in the old style "headache" containers/pouches has actually worked the best- very little perspiring. They still do perspire so you have to be careful, typically I change the ice every hour or so and drain all water. I place the bag on top of the camera and it does the trick. Triple bagging ice in zip-lock bags has worked in a pinch, but that's asking for trouble. These headache/pouches have one small opening, have a screw top lid that locks tight (just large enough to make pouring ice into it easy enough) and has a skin that is durable/strong.
I've heard of some chemical that is used in motorcycle vests that can keep a rider cool for up to 4 hours. Going to try one of these out and do a DIY saddle bag custom fit for the RED. Have a couple inserts to slide into the slots and you should be good to go. Just re-dip them into cold water for 20 minutes to re-charge the chemical. That sounds do-able on set. Gotta be functional, fast and look good.
I'll post a picture or two when it's completed.
