The word on Dragon

I am in Monroe LA shooting a commercial and I had a great conversation with my mate, colleague and friend John Schwartzman today. He just finished shooting film on "Dracula Year One" in Ireland and is going with film on "Jurrasic Park 4" next. We discussed Dragon and he may borrow one of mine after New Years. He asked about DR and skin tones.

He was never disappointed in the Epic look on Spidy and yet he always states that " we DPs make our living making actresses look good..

I impressed upon him how far we have come. The sensor, the DR, the skin tones and the color work that Graeme has done is amazing. The roll off in facial skin tones is so creamy.
I feel that those of us lucky enough to be shooting professionally on Dragon need to get our cameras into our collegues hands...

In that vein when I return from France and family time home in France I want to offer the use of my Dragon in Los Angeles to any DP who might want to test them.
The word needs to get out. And any studio who wants to test them is welcome also...

Just shot a piece on Epic MX last night that would have been a feast for the Dragon. Lighting was deliberately low to maintain atmosphere and to avoid washing out practical lighting effects. This meant there were plenty of shadows for noise to manifest in, including human skin. There was also practical fire in frame so I was bumping up against clip.

The talent would like to do a few more pieces in the next week or two (variations of the first pass) and I'd love to see what the Dragon would do with the mixed lighting temps. Also curious about holding chroma in the flames themselves.

In any case, I can dial up an insurance certificate and I think my peeps at RED will vouch for me. I'd also be willing to invite a RedUser or two to join the fun.

Very generous offer Peter, I'll understand if you feel others are more deserving.

I agree wholeheartedly Peter. We are actively getting our Dragon into the hands of people who are not only interested but are also naysayers so the discussions can be informed from all sides.

We make the same offer for any Studio, DP or user that wants to test is more than welcome.

Very good question. Jarred stated they have only recently gotten the Dragon sensor yields up to the same speeds as Epics, with more to come. I'm wondering too if there isn't more sensor yield in DR and color science that hasn't been realized yet. I'm not an engineer so I don't know how much of that relates to ASIIC hardware or firmware.

I just finished shooting my little RKO feature in Atlanta with my 2 Dragons. Exposed 400 SSD mags. No lost clips. sent my A body in for the main firmware upgrade first week. So not in beta as far as I am concerned.... And yes I believe Graeme is working hard on his voodoo color science to improve color where I cannot even perceive it. But that is what he does. Remember how many color improvements he gave us with Red One and MX so expect the same.

Woah, I jumped the gun. Very generous. This is how you make friends. I've always wanted relationships with friends, borrow a lens for a lens, test this gear, raise the bar for all of us in general and work towards maximizing technical efficiency, creating more time to be spent on though and overcoming artistic challenges.

Is it just me or does Graeme have the heavies burden of the load with the new upgrades? One guy creating a color science to evolve the camera industry?
