  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Update Thread

Arri's range has a single sensor- name designations primarily relate to functionality/codec options. As such for a Producer an ARRI is an ARRI is an ARRI give or take codec or highspeed framerate- it all gives the same look/result to the same lens choice.

I appreciate the explanation of Red's terminology guys- I have and/or (had) all of them. Re- read some of your "it's simple" posts and imagine you're reading that for the first time...

Daily I have discussions with production staff about ARRI, Canon, Sony, Red cameras. I can assure you the most confusion relates to Red. We have a combination of body type/ sensor/resolution/frame rate/compression/mount type / media type for high speed etc to address in a naming structure that has absolutely no logic.

Naming structure/ brand strands is surely one of the easiest things to address in light of the amazing leaps in technology that Red is making.

Unfortunately we're having to deal with an abscure, non linear, non sensical terminology that in a sea of digital change has everyone reaching for the Alexa life raft (again).

I know this is too late now- everything is already set - I just wish it wasn't so ad-hoc.

Looking forward to seeing how quickly I get my Scarlet-W after everyone jumps to the Epic-W :P

The clients not understanding is *an advantage*. That way you can bamboozle them with science and tack 10% onto the price :)

This from the guy who chastised anyone "gaming the system" by ordering a Scarlet W just for the purpose of getting an Epic W at a $10,000 discount to the new price? '-)

Maybe they could stamp the different lines with an AKA name to go along with the current naming convention.

That is what October 11th is for.

Not much of an "announcement day" now that I did a commendable job of not keeping my mouth shut.. it will be more of a "recap and execute" day.

What time of day should we all be looking out for?

i really like the naming convention, and especially with interchangeable sensors in the Epic W it makes perfect sense. Besides, it is their company and Red will name things however they think is best, just because they are so friendly on this forum, let us not forget that we are the guests. I live in a world of high tech products and have been blown away with just how clever my Scarlet W is as a working products in modular form, they can call it anything they want. It is so clearly amazing.

Brent is so overwhelmed by roses and chocolates and whiskey and life-sized teddy bears he can't see even see his computer screen anymore.

So job well done all... Operation/Distraction #ILoveBrent was a complete success :)

WOOHOO!!!!!

who cares what the camera ends up being called.
It's gonna be kick ass either way. and as long as we know what it is.

Yup. Double-standards all the way. :)

Jarred - If you can swap from Helium to Dragon, what would a "case" be that you would want to swap from a Helium to a Dragon sensor? What does the Dragon do that the Helium doesn't?

The dragon sensor is slightly bigger overall, and bigger at each resolution which is important for higher frame rates. It also doesn't seem to be substantially lower dynamic range and is happier in well lit situations (like daylight exeriors).

Jarred or Brent, you can admit your camera names are getting a little wonky. Just because there's 13 alexas doesn't mean red should follow arri with their own esoteric list of camera names.
