No offence but it's not that hard guys ;)

W & Weapon = DSMC2
Helium = new sensor, S35 8K
Dragon = current sensor, 6K and 8K VV

Scarlet-D = DSMC1 with Dragon
Epic-D = DSMC1 with 6K Dragon
Raven = DSMC2 with 4.5K Dragon
Scarlet-W = DSMC2 with 5K Dragon
Epic-W = DSMC2 with 8K Helium
Weapon Helium = DSMC2 with 8K Helium (deluxe)
Weapon Mg = DSMC2 with 6K Dragon
Weapon CF = DSMC2 with 6K Dragon (deluxe)
Weapon VistaVision = DSMC2 with 8K Dragon

(off the top of my head, easypeasy)

Still think it's overly complicated, but for the first time that description really makes sense - thanks JeanChristophe for taking the time to write it out - much appreciated.

That is what October 11th is for.

Not much of an "announcement day" now that I did a commendable job of not keeping my mouth shut.. it will be more of a "recap and execute" day.

Thanks Jarred. Once I've seen what Epic W is (which, as per my post above, I suspect is not the route for us), will an upgrade path to DSMC 2 still exist for our Epic Dragons? I was under the impression when I dropped in here a week or so back that the option to go DSMC2 for ED owners shut down on the 10th. It was very late though and I was vey tired :)

My desk right now, its an aussie thing and at this time of year if you make wines its kind of essential

It's really not that difficult. As Jarred just pointed out, the Epic-W will, in the future, be able to be fitted with a Dragon sensor. So Epic-Helium makes no sense.

Weapon is the top of the DSMC2 line. So Scarlet and Epic's newest counterparts get a "-W" designation. Raven is a totally new level of camera so doesn't need it.

Yes what he said. Good job Tom.

And as much as everyone picks on us for having to many cameras, there are a total of 13 different versions of an Alexa out there.

Alexa Classic EV
Alexa SXT EV
Alexa SXT Plus
Alexa SXT Studio
Alexa Mini
Alexa XT
Alexa XT Plus
Alexa XT M
Alexa XT Studio
Alexa Plus
Alexa Plus 4:3
Alexa M
Alexa Studio.

Those names don't really mean anything to a "normal" person and you'd need to explain those just as much as you would need to explain what the difference is between an Epic and an Epic Dragon and an Epic-W.

You're very welcome Rich :)

I know a few brands with way more complicated naming conventions, think of Microsoft: Windows 3.0, 3.1, 95, 98, 98SE, Millenium, NT (up to NT 4.x), 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10 (where's 9??!). Then there's Xbox, Xbox 360 then Xbox One (wut?). Go tell them to change their names, lol.

And Sony must be like "lets start up the random-generator" for their cameras....except for Playstation 1, 2, 3 and 4, haha!

Not the same planet but how about Sony with cameras and model numbers that seem to expand monthly.

Totally agree.

Will say, anytime anyone from the RED team calls out Arri, I'm just like...

I personally find it extremely easy to understand the RED lineup of cameras. You guys only have a few models, its not that hard to grasp lol. Take a look at Canons lineup of cameras and try understanding that haha. I also commend you guys on being true to who you are especially how you name everything. Love the skulls, love the radical names like Weapon, Dragon, Helium, Bomb Squad, etc... Don't ever change.

The amira and mini variations as well... just saying...

Everyone just has too many cameras... Ha

and I have too many ...

The Tim Tams arrived , so very Australian ;)

here how to do the Tim Tam Slam

timtam-2.jpg

We used to sell the most Tm Tams of any Woolworths supermarket in the country from the Japanese tourists buying them, Brent.

But you really have to try some of the specialist time tams, they are the best compares to the normal Tim Tams. Pineapple, Choc orange, Red Velvet, Zuma or something like that, they even had something like that Champagne bottle of yours. But the White Wings homestyle cookies, now a Greens brand.

The only difference is that all Alexa's share the same sensor. For a producer who doesn't follow camera news, it would seem logical to rent a Scarlet-W and Epic-W, but they are two different sensors.

It's also a little confusing that Weapon is used both as the DSMC2 designation and the name of the flagship camera. If asked which Weapon camera you have, how do you reply? I guess the "Weapon-Weapon"

It seems more intuitive to divide it by "tier" and then sensor and give the flagship a new name, though maybe its a bit late for that, i.e.:

Dragon Cameras:
Raven-W
Scarlet-W
Epic-W
Nuke-W (or something like that for what is now the Weapon)
Monstro-W (8K VV)

Helium Cameras:
Raven-H
Scarlet-H
Epic-H
Nuke-H

The ship may have sailed on doing it that way, and I have no problem following the current convention, but for clients it does require a little explaining.

So no Smart cameraphone, or being able to use its modules for drone use? No Redray projector? No augmented reality VR, or other speculated about Jim's new project?

The clients not understanding is *an advantage*. That way you can bamboozle them with science and tack 10% onto the price :)

Or you could get burned by hiring a guy who said he has a "weapon" when it's really a Scarlet-W. Still a great camera, but if you go in expecting one and getting the other... not a happy client

Then what does the W in -W stand for?

-W stands for DSMC 2.

Because Scarlet and Epic have history as MX/DSMC1 models, they get the -W

Raven and Weapon are first in their generation and they do not have -W on the end.

SKUs off the top of my head:

Original body, (M & MX)

Red One M
Red One MX

DSMC 1 (MX & Dragon)

Scarlet MX
Epic MX
Epic-M MX
(plus monochrome)

Scarlet D
Epic D
Epic-M
(plus monochrome)

DSMC 2 (Dragon & Helium)

Raven (dragon 4.5K)
Scarlet-W (dragon 5K)
(plus monochrome)
Weapon Magnesium (badass) (dragon)
Epic-W (dragon VV & helium s35)

Weapon Carbon (badasses) (dragon, dragon VV & helium s35)
Weapon Forged (badassest) (dragon, dragon VV & helium s35)

Stormtrooper Weapon Helium (legendary helium s35)

Maybe i'll bust out Illustrator and make a PHFX-like graphic :)

The only thing left out in the discussion of naming was "Stealth." Remember that? Let's harken back about all the discussion when Weapon was introduced. LOL
