  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

haha. I keep checking in to see if anything new has been posted. I'm going to bed

No you are not...you have the post counter on this thing tied to an alarm clock...don't deny it...

Jarred, just a simple FPS grid... so we can stop guessing. We know you have it queued up. Simply press POST. You ask him Brody ;)

Any Scarlet-W guys worried about giving up high frame rates? I know I'll probably end up going Epic-W because it's been 10 months since I ordered and I'd rather have a camera sooner... but man, 4K 120fps with relatively minor crop sounds reeeeeeal good. I was getting excited to double my FS7's 4K frame rate, but now it's looking like I'd have to rely on the FS7 for almost anything above 30fps unless I'm cool with mega-crop.

What are your thoughts?

I like having high frame rates on my Epic MX. But, I don't go over 72fps most of the time. 48 is where I usually like to go. So, I plan to move to the Epic W. If I need higher fps, I can just do it in post. Not my first choice. But, I really like how the Helium digs into the shadows.

Wait, what do you mean "do it in post"? I really hope you don't mean stretching out clips for fake slomo. that's nasty, dude.

I haven't been an editor for ages. But, I am sure there has to be something out there that can do a decent job. If not, I will just have to break out the MX for slo-mo.

please don't say twixtor, haha

Hey Kronos 'aint bad!

But really, in camera ftw. Yeah if I really had to find a con to E-W vs S-W it would be the "minimal crop hi speed". Heck I'd be thrilled with 48fps @ ~7-8k.

In reality, I've always had to crop for ultra hi speed (R1, S-X) so I guess I'm used to that inconvenience. On the bright side, Toia's 400x (!!!) crop looked fantastic, so at least it 'ain't introducing a ton of grain like the Mysterium sensors do!

Jarred... care to, erm, chime in on FPS options? ;)

Haha fair enough. I think I'm keeping my FS7, so I suppose 4K 60 and 1080p 180fps will have to do, if the project calls for it.

Now, speaking of not editing: A lot of my projects recently have been ones where the footage is handed off to an editor or post house. Guys who do that a lot: Are you concerned at all with push-back on 8K files. I know guys that got pushback on 6K from Dragon and they ended up having to crop (messing with all their lens selections) to deliver 4K files. The times they are a-changin' so I know that post houses will probably become more adaptable (or do their own transcodes), but does anyone have concerns about creating 8K RAW files?

(just looking to open up a few avenues of discussion while we wait for Jarred to start that new topic!)

Man, you go way back. I've had the luxury of Sony's FS700 and FS7. Compressed, sure. Image issues, of course. But they've gotten the job done for slomo. Good to hear that you are planning to work around it. Hopefully we get something like 48fps at 7K or 6K, that would be really nice. And Toia's video was really good. That noise comparison was insane. Like I said earlier, I've been using the FS7 for almost two years now and I've gotten very used to a 2000 base ISO, so increased low-light performance will certainly work in my favor.

Can't wait until Oct 11!

honestly? no. I shoot almost entirely narrative work. I'd rather rent a camera for a day or two of HFR work and be able to rent to the film a better camera, make more money, and have my work look better than to be prepared for a fringe scenario.

I absolutely wonder about pushback with 8k. Very happy to see the 4K prores option, given that a lot of productions are pretty Amira heavy where I am I think that'll give rental / owner-op opportunities an edge. I do end up cutting a lot of what I shoot, so the more pressing question, personally, is how many red mags and solid state drives am I going to need to buy and how to keep all that data archived...

I'm hanging on to hope that this wasn't lost on the RED engineers when discussing the ramifications of going 8k, and the big oct. 11 killer feature will be finally allowing in-camera sampling to a 1/2 res flavor of red code.

Yeah data rates is my chief concern with epic and the additional cost of redmags and hard drives. Then the big one being processing power. I have a 1070gtx that works pretty damn well with mx 4k files. I think Scarlet 5k will be wnough of a jump. Im assuming 8k would almost demand a red rocketx? Or would two gtx 1080's do the job?

Not going to do a 1/2 res flavor of REDCODE. That goes against the whole concept of raw. You lose the ability to control the debayer and the image quality from pixel binning is less than optimal. You are better off just shooting a flat scaled DNX or ProRes RGB file.

*relieved* To me it just doesn't make any sense to give up the thing that most differentiates RED; the power of REDcode. Like Toia (unfortunately maybe the only thing we have in common), I am an R3D purist to the end. Long live REDcode Raw!!

I also prefer in camera slow-mo and the SW has some great frame rates for sure. I love my FS700 for its slo-mo and I know I would dig the slo-mo on the SW. If the crop is too much on the EW I probably won't do much slo-mo with it. I've gone back and forth so much on what to do. One day I'm sold on sticking with my SW, the next I'm 100% sold on the EW, the next day back again. I think its a little difficult at times to commit when the specs aren't completely released and since there isn't any footage from this actual camera yet. I'll admit, its the first time in my life I've been willing to drop 20 large on a camera I've never seen an image from haha.

Hello Jarred,
What's the priority queue on WEAPON HELIUM? We know EPIC-W is SCARLET-W / RAVEN (yet to receive camera) timestamp first, then Oct 11th order timestamp. Is WEAPON HELIUM using this as well?
