The Update Thread

sorry, its because this is my first camera i actually owned and before this ive only used the highest end camera, with all these new introductions, raven, scarlet-w, epic-w, i was confused with what would happen with a sensor crop when going to 4khd.
now it seems like i wont be shooting with a helium anytime soon since im forced to shoot in a way higher resolotuin than any production would let me.

Or shoot 4K proresXQ and get the benefits of a great 8k downsample, full sensor field of view, and the new helium color/ISO benefits. And what post is gonna say no to prores ;)

Brent - I ordered a MG upgrade package November 2015, and I have shipped my Epic Dragon to RED HQ in UK for the Weapon MG upgrade 5 weeks ago all paid - still waiting for my new camera - will I get the MG as ordered and then be able to upgrade to one of the Helium deals or how does it work...?

Red Scarlet-X Mysterium-X 5K -1.20 crop of S35 @ 4K HD

Red Epic Mysterium-X 5K- 1.20 crop of S35 @ 4k HD

Weapon 8K VV - 1.30 crop of S35 @ 4K HD

Weapon 6K Dragon CF / MG- 1.30 crop of S35 @ 4K HD

Red Raven - 1.30 crop of S35 @ 4K HD

Scarlet-W - 1.30 crop of S35 @ 4K HD

Weapon 6K Dragon - 1.30 crop of S35 @ 4K HD

Red Epic 6k Dragon -1.30 crop of S35 @ 4K HD

Red Scarlet Dragon 5K- 1.30 crop of S35 @ 4K HD

Weapon Helium 8K S35 - 1.78 crop of S35 @ 4K HD

cant believe no one can actually answer this question, ive been putting it out there for all about a year now and its always passed over, now with even more cameras being released it would be nice to know. i cant even give productions a real answer.
to reiterate, if every camera red sells were set to 4khd, which one would be closest to s35mm.
thanks.

It's really easy to figure out. I know you've already got your answer but:

Go to any red camera product page and jot down the max resolution and the sensor size.

Divide the sensor width by the horizontal resolution or the height by the vertical resolution to get the pixel pitch. For the Scarlet-W I linked, that's 25.6mm/5120 pixels to get 0.005 mm/pixel. And you'll find that you get the same 0.005 number, for every single Dragon sensor camera. If the pixel pitch were different, it would be a different sensor design entirely and wouldn't be named Dragon.

Now, take the resolution of the format you are shooting, in this case 4K HD, and multiply it by that pixel pitch. So 3840 pixels * 0.005 mm/pixel = 19.2 mm horizontally. And S35 is 24.9mm so you'll be at a ~1.3 crop from S35.

Since pixel pitch doesn't change between Dragon cameras, you only need to calculate this number once per sensor. So the real answer to your question, Raven or Scarlet-W (and Weapon 6K, Weapon 8K Vista Vision, Scarlet Dragon and Epic Dragon) are the exact same size shooting 4k HD. That's why Phil's tool doesn't ask which camera, it asks which sensor.

I think I mentioned previously....

If, come Oct 11, your upgrade is physically being performed, we will finish it. If not, you will be eligible for whatever upgrade paths are available to EPIC DRAGON owners...

4K ProRes is most likely only available on the Weapon Helium and Stormtroopers, not on Epic-W. It is a very good reason to spend the extra $ and get the best.

I also ordered Nov 2015 and got allocated in the spring. Since it seemed time was running out getting the upgrade I initiated the upgrade last Friday (been busy shooting and never found an opening in the schedule). Do you think I will be able to get the upgrade since we're still about 2 weeks out from the announcement?

too bad that red just doesnt have a s35 4khd format, i would think that would be the standard for todays productions.
Don't forget that all of these cinema cameras (Red, Arri, Sony, Panasonic, BMD, etc...) are using CMOS sensors. If you want real 4K resolution, you need to shoot > 4K on the camera. I understand that the customers you work with probably don't want to hear all the tech speak, or possibly don't understand it, and just want a final deliverable in 4K / UHD or 2K / HD.

I would shoot on a Weapon / Helium and deliver 4K ProRes / DNxHR to them. then you can use the full sensor / 8K and deliver the final 4K.

Guessing he wants the s35 for lens compatibility tho.

so whats going on, scarlet w still back logged but epic w will ship oct 11? this entire thing actually cause some consumer confidence issues with me and I backed out of my 2 scarlet order to see what happens when the smoke clears as I wouldn't be into spending more to get something now with better specs

Thanks for this info!

exactly. i want s35, but post wont accept anything shot above 4khd, no matter how i try to defend it, the more i try to shoot at a higher res and explain it, i become the problem dp that is hard to deal with. thats the tv world for you.

Jarred has made it pretty clear that the whole point behind enticing people into jumping onto the Epic-W bandwagon is to alleviate pressure on Dragon sensors in order to help get Scarlet-W into customers' hands sooner. That Red is willing to take a hit to the bottom line because the Scarlet-W and Raven are so far behind has affected my confidence in Red, but for the better.
