The Update Thread

Lol.... I Can't imagine why people are having a hard time navigating through this update thread to find only the relevant information being made available by the only source that matters. There are umteen pages with people borderline petitioning to change the name of the camera. I mean cmon.... Do you blog about Prius changing its name? No probably because you know the higher ups aren't listening. These are the moments I feel for Brent and jarred when there are so many great things being offered by the most transparent company and they have to sit and read this. Not saying people aren't entitled to feel the way they feel and negate anyone's feelings but cmon, you see the cameras have labels made, and the names have been set. There has never been a thread started by jarred, Brent, Jim or anyone else at red for that matter asking what they should name it. So just ease up a bit and keep the bigger picture in mind.

Jesus. Squabbling over the names of the cameras now. C'mon guys, u must be getting bored.

lol mine was intended as constructive criticism. Hopefully it wasn't misinterpreted as negativity.

Red is doing great things, albeit confusing at times.

Regarding "here today, gone tomorrow":

I know several people with Scarlet-W orders placed (some that already own Epic Dragons) who seldom, if ever, visit the forums. I could see them being very upset if they happened to be traveling, working, unaware, etc. of a single-day $10k off deal for the upgrade. Maybe I should start a mailing list of S-W friends and keep them updated...

Are deals like this usually sent out to customers (as notices or order updates)? or maybe knowing about it is a perk of being on the forum :P

One question I still have is what frame rates Epic-W will be at 6K.

It seems like the smaller pixel will finally make all real S35mm lenses cover 6K or even 7k unlike Dragon that vignetted when you shot 6K on most S35mm lenses like cooked and ultra primes and master primes and they also had an odd crop factor that directors never seem to understand on the day. So if Epic-W has a true S35mm sensor size when you crop to 6k-7kish what frame rate max will it be? I am interested in 8K like everyone else but to be honest this proper 6K S35 format is what makes me most excited about Epic-W and Helium.

Holy! I'm in the middle of exploring Finland and now I have like 30 pages to catch up on, or find that one post that puts it all nice and tidy.

From what I understand so far, these are the best choices going forward if you plan hopping on the deal train, correct me if I'm wrong:

- Make a deposit on a Scarlet-W (either by jumping from a Raven, upgrading from a Scarlet Dragon to the Scarlet-W package, or fresh brain deposit) and you will be able to upgrade to Epic-W (window ending in December?)

- Make a deposit on a Weapon MG package by upgrading your Epic Dragon and will be able to upgrade to Epic-W (window ending in December?)

- Purchase a Weapon MG Brain now and you will be able to upgrade to Epic-W (window ending in December?)

- You'll be able to upgrade your current Weapon MG to Epic-W for a good deal since you won't get trickfucked.

- You'll be able to upgrade your Epic Dragon to Epic-W for a decent deal, probably close to the same prize as the Epic Dragon to Weapon MG Upgrade, but most likely "brain only" instead of all the package accessories you get if you upgrade to Weapon MG today.

- You will be able to upgrade any DSMC 1 camera or even a RED One to something within the DSMC 2 family somehow.

Last but not least, thank you so much Jarred and the RED team for all of this, it definitely feels like Christmas, and it's not just that I'm in Santa's land at the moment.
I made it to Finland because of the inspiration RED and RED users have given me in the things I produce.

Jarred, are there glimpses of a little package?

Any recommendations for (fast) wide angle lenses when shooting Helium in 3-4K?

6k Helium is a 1.11x crop factor from super 35

I do not think that is correct. I just spent a few hours looking for the answer to this. A true super 35mm frame is 24.9mm wide. Helium is 3.65 micron pixel so 6820 pixels wide = 24.9mm So it looks like the answer is 6.8k Helium shoots an exact 1:1 Super 35mm wide image, which is super incredibly perfect for me. What would make me really happy is if RED would actually put 6.8k as an option choice to record on Helium so all our S35mm lenses would equate to perfect traditional s35mm field of view and now every s35mm lens ever made covers properly. Thank you RED.

Phil Holland has already put all this together for us based on the Stormtroopers. Check this link:

Running Helium at 6k is in fact a 1.11 crop from S35

Your welcome. But Austin was actually right and you are also actually right.... well right enough....

I think what is confusing you is crop factors are usually listed in relation to Full Frame 35mm, And Austin gave you his answer in relation to Super 35mm.

Right, I should have caught that miscommunication… my sleeplessness is catching up with me.

I have often thought that it would be better if we communicated focal lengths in FOV terms instead, as it would solve some of these issues. Of course this wouldn't work well on set, as we would have to do the conversions based on sensor size of whatever camera we are using today. Not a great idea, but an idea nonetheless.
